Il FRIM o Forest Research Institute of Malaysia, situato a Kepong, è un must per tutti gli amanti della natura che si trovano nella capitale Kuala Lumpur. Si trova nella periferia di Petaling Jaya, a circa 16 km a nord ovest della capitale. È stata fondata nel 1929 ed è una delle principali istituzioni nella ricerca sulla silvicoltura tropicale sia a livello locale che all'estero. Questa foresta tropicale di 600 ettari contiene una ricchezza di flora e fauna con circa 15.000 specie di piante anche se per un laico in botanico, tutte sembrano verde.

Itinerario
Il tour inizia intorno alle 09:00 e alle 14:00 per le private e alle 09:00 per Seat in Coach con il pick-up dell'hotel (hotel selezionato intorno alla città di Kuala Lumpur). ci vorranno circa 1 ora di viaggio al Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM). Lungo la strada si passa attraverso tipici paesani malesi e scene di persone amiche che si occupano delle loro faccende quotidiane. Una volta arrivato all'istituto forestale, verrai presentato alla guida del trekking naturalistico. Un'introduzione del luogo e delle attività sarà effettuata immediatamente all'arrivo prima di procedere con il trekking nella giungla. Si prega di indossare un abbigliamento adeguato per queste attività. Mentre entri nei percorsi di trekking, rimarrai stupito dagli arboreti o dal museo vivente degli alberi. Cammina attraverso i numerosi sentieri naturali e scopri le numerose specie di flora e fauna qui. Di particolare interesse è il modello "a puzzle" delle singole corone degli alberi separate da spazi vuoti e delineate contro il cielo. Questo fenomeno si chiama "Crown Shyness". Il motivo del suo nome è dato dal fatto che le punte delle foglie del Dryobalanops aromatica sembrano essere timide nei confronti del loro stesso tipo, formando così il vuoto. Questo albero è anche conosciuto come albero di kapur e ha un essudato dall'odore gradevole, noto come canfora, uno dei componenti principali dell'unguento. L'unguento viene utilizzato per massaggi dello stomaco dopo il parto. Dopo circa un'ora nella giungla e divertiti a imparare cose nuove, abbiamo fatto le valigie e siamo tornati in hotel.

FRIM is a government protected area dedicated to restoring natural life in all parts of Malaysia. Here, they have lovingly restored an old tin mine into a rainforest after 100 years of concerted efforts. We booked a guided tour for six persons (languages available are English, Malay, Chinese) on a Sunday morning and really enjoyed it. Our guide was a botanist who worked at FRIM and really knew his stuff. Our tour went from 8:30 to 11. You can see the famous crown shyness as well as all sorts of fauna. 1) Be sure to reserve your trek with an email to frim_enquiry@frim.gov.my and they will give instructions on availability, payment, and assign a guide. 2) be sure to bring your printed confirmation as the FRIM is a protected area and random cars cannot enter without registration. 3) our guide emailed us google map coordinates to the visitor information center. Be sure to follow those as it’s a rather long walk from the entrance. 4) be sure to wear long socks and long pants as there are plenty of bugs and even leeches. 5) bring lots of water as it can get quite hot, booking early in the morning is advisable. We paired our frim visit with a lunch in kepong (bah ku teh) then visited KLCC in the late afternoon. Amazing day.
