L'abbondanza di cultura, storia e natura ha fatto sì che Nikko venisse dichiarata Patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO. Famosa per il suo fogliame autunnale, lo scenario è spettacolare in ogni stagione. Lo splendido scenario naturale della zona ha una lunga storia di attrazione per praticanti buddisti e shintoisti, ed è anche il luogo di riposo finale di Tokugawa Ieyasu, il fondatore e primo shogun dello shogunato Tokugawa del Giappone. Quando visiti Nikko, non puoi perderti il santuario Nikko Toshogu e Kemangafuchi, che potresti non riuscire a visitare in altri tour. Puoi anche sentire il fascino della natura alle cascate Kegon, incredibilmente potenti. Ci sono molte cucine locali che puoi gustare come lo yuba (pelle di tofu), la trota iridea, ecc... Nikko è una tappa obbligata quando si visita il Giappone.

Il Santuario di Toshogu è un magnifico memoriale a Tokugawa Ieyasu, il fondatore dello Shogunato Tokugawa, che governò il Giappone per oltre 250 anni fino al 1868. Ieyasu è consacrato a Toshogu come la divinità Tosho Daigongen, "Grande divinità della luce splendente dell'est". Inizialmente un mausoleo relativamente semplice, Toshogu fu ampliato nello spettacolare complesso visto oggi dal nipote di Ieyasu, Iemitsu, durante la prima metà del XVII secolo. Il complesso del santuario riccamente decorato è costituito da più di una dozzina di edifici immersi in una bellissima foresta. Innumerevoli sculture in legno e grandi quantità di foglia d'oro sono state utilizzate per decorare gli edifici in un modo che non si vedeva altrove in Giappone, dove la semplicità è stata tradizionalmente sottolineata nell'architettura dei santuari.
La Tamozawa Imperial Villa fonde la tradizionale architettura Edo e la prima moderna architettura del periodo Meiji in tutte le sue 106 camere. La villa fu eretta a Nikko nel 1899, utilizzando parti di una residenza che originariamente sorgeva a Tokyo. Prima di essere trasferito a Nikko, l'edificio servì inizialmente come residenza a Tokyo di un ramo della famiglia Tokugawa e in seguito fu temporaneamente utilizzato come Palazzo Imperiale. A Nikko fu ampliato in residenza estiva e ritiro per la famiglia imperiale, ma subì l'abbandono dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. Nell'anno 2000 la villa è stata aperta al pubblico dopo ampi lavori di ristrutturazione.
L'altopiano di Akechidaira si trova vicino alla cima della strada tortuosa Irohazaka in salita. Sull'altopiano c'è un parcheggio con un'area di osservazione gratuita che offre belle viste sull'Irohazaka e sulla valle sottostante. Durante l'autunno, questo diventa un popolare punto di colore autunnale poiché i colori autunnali si diffondono nel paesaggio.
Circa 20.000 anni fa, un'eruzione del Monte Nantai creò il Lago Chuzenji ai suoi piedi. Ad un'altitudine di 1.269 metri, Chuzenji è il lago naturale più alto del Giappone, con un sentiero escursionistico di 25 chilometri lungo il suo perimetro. Nel corso del XIX e XX secolo fu un rinomato luogo di villeggiatura estiva per ville di proprietà di stranieri e ambasciate. Il paesaggio comprende azalee in fiore all'inizio dell'estate e fogliame luminoso in autunno.
La cascata di Kegon, alta quasi 100 metri, è la più famosa delle tante belle cascate di Nikko. In effetti, è persino classificata come una delle tre cascate più belle del Giappone, insieme alla cascata di Nachi nella prefettura di Wakayama e alla cascata di Fukuroda nella prefettura di Ibaraki.

If you enjoy history and culture, I highly recommend this tour. After partaking in one of Outech's other tours, Mt. Fuji, I decided to book another with my same guide, Riley (Ryoko). She's absolutely phenomenal, and I highly suggest you request her if she is available. She is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and can answer almost any question you throw at her. If she doesn't know something, she will seek out the answers from the various staff members and stewards at the various shrines and other locations. Her English is excellent, and she translated various conversations for me when talking with the staff at various craft shops. I highly suggest stopping by the craft shop located on the other side of the mountain where the Nikko Shrine sits. There's an insanely beautiful Buddhist temple nearby the store that we visited, and the owner's of the shop were so kind they even offered us tea. You can purchase a variety of intricate carvings and other artworks from them. I got a personalised plaque with my family name on it, and they carve it into the wood right in front of you. One of my favourite experiences! As for the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, it's incredibly beautiful. If you're bold enough to walk the two hundred steps up the mountain, you can witness one of Shogun Tokugawa's resting places: a small pagoda containing some of his remains. It's quite a mystical place, I must say. The inner sanctum of one of the shrines is absolutely gorgeous, and they provide guests with a brief tour explaining the acoustics of the building which amount to nothing less than magic. If you go during the winter, I suggest bringing thick socks as you have to remove your shoes before entering certain areas. By the end of the inner sanctum tour, I had almost no feeling in my toes, but I was fine afterwards! We also visited Kegon Falls, a beautiful display of natural wonder, especially in the winter. I do suggest dressing warm as it was quite frigid that time of year, but incredibly worth it. I highly recommend this tour if you're into cultural and natural beauty.

Despite steady rain and lots of crowds we had a spectacular day with our driver/guide Roberto. Fluent in English he was able to amplify the experience by providing historical background as well as interesting vignettes. And he selected an excellent sushi restaurant for our lunch break. We would recommend Roberto and his company without reservation!
