The tour guide was very knowledgeable, however we were seated downstairs on the left side, while she was only talking about buildings on the right hand side. So next time we visit Chicago we’ll have to take the tour again and sit on the other side of the boat :)
I’ve never been to a city where one activity is so universally recommended, but everyone I talked to (whether local or previous visitors) said I should do a boat tour. And they weren’t wrong! I recommend doing this as one of your first activities when you get to Chicago, because it really helps orient you in the city, explains the most iconic buildings, and gives the city’s history at a basic level. Our guide Jack was also full of recommendations for other things to see, do, and eat. The inner cabin is climate controlled but can get a bit too loud to hear the guide. The river breezes will keep you cool if you ride on the deck, and you can move around throughout the voyage for the best view
I would not recommend this tour during the summer as it is incredibly hot. The tour company cannot impact the weather so that’s not their fault, it just made it incredibly uncomfortable. Aside from that the tour guide spoke incredibly fast and mumbled so for an hour, we learned very little about the architectural and subject matter of the actual tour. At a minimum, I would recommend that they replace the tour guide with someone that spoke more clearly, was more friendly, and spoke slower.
The Chicago Architecture River Cruise was one of the highlights of my visit to the city. Seeing Chicago from the water gives you a completely different perspective, allowing you to truly appreciate its remarkable skyline and the stories behind each building. The guide made the experience even more enjoyable with fascinating insights into the city’s history, architecture, and the people who shaped it. The commentary was engaging without feeling overwhelming, making it easy to follow whether you’re an architecture enthusiast or simply taking in the views. Gliding along the river while surrounded by some of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers was both relaxing and unforgettable. If you’re visiting Chicago, this is an experience I wouldn’t miss—it’s the perfect blend of history, design, and breathtaking scenery. The tour is 90 minutes long, it was almost full. We paid ~ $65 per person for the cruise.
It was an amazing experience! The tour guide did a great job and was very knowledgeable and friendly!!
It turned out to be such a hot day that we had to move below to the longe room for our own personal comfort. What we heard and saw before moving and missing some of the talk was quite enlightening. Chicago has a wonderful architectural history.
Top level definitely has better views. Don't arrive too late as the boat can get crowded. While we had a beautiful sunny day, you may want to consider cancelling if rain is expected.
Tess was outstanding, informative and wonderful. The tour was amazing and will do again! It would be quite helpful, since not many people carry cash anymore, to have a Venmo or QR code on display to leave a tip for any of your guides. I heard other passengers express the same, as we wanted to leave Tess, our guide, a gratuity for all her kindness and hard work.
Great information the guide really new the history and details of the city and it’s buildings. Great weather made it nicer
An awesome way to see and learn the history of the city. Our tour guide was excellent and explained the history of the skyscrapers.
