All'arrivo a Guimarães, inizieremo il nostro tour nella parte alta della città, dove si trova il Castello di Guimarães. La nostra guida ti parlerà della storia antica del Portogallo mentre passi davanti al castello medievale più antico del Portogallo e inizi la discesa nel centro della città.
Questa chiesa risale al XIII secolo ed è attualmente classificata come monumento nazionale. Si tratta di un edificio in stile romanico, ricostruito all'inizio del XX secolo rispettando l'aspetto originario. Esiste una leggenda legata a questa chiesa, secondo la quale il primo re del Portogallo, D. Afonso Henriques, fu battezzato qui.
Questo palazzo risale all'inizio del XV secolo e la sua costruzione fu ordinata da D. Afonso (figlio del re D. João I) al momento del suo matrimonio con D. Constança de Noronha. Nel corso degli anni ha servito a diversi scopi, provocandone l'usura. All'inizio del XX secolo iniziarono i lavori di restauro del palazzo. È classificato come monumento nazionale e attualmente funge da museo ed espone opere di arazzi, mobili, porcellane cinesi e dipinti.
Lungo la discesa verso la zona residenziale della città, attraverseremo Rua de Santa Maria, una delle prime strade di Guimarães, che fungeva da collegamento principale tra il convento di D. Mumadona Dias, la zona residenziale e il Castello.
Si tratta di una piazza sociale per gli abitanti di Guimarães, dove si possono trovare ristoranti, bar e terrazze, circondati dall'architettura tipica della città. Secondo la leggenda il nome della piazza è dovuto all'apostolo Giacomo che, in pellegrinaggio, lasciò qui un'immagine della Vergine Maria. Nel XII secolo vi fu costruita una chiesa, che fu demolita nel XIX secolo.
Largo da Oliveira è una delle piazze più emblematiche e storiche di Guimarães, in Portogallo. Il suo nome deriva da un ulivo secolare che simboleggia la pace e la tradizione. Questo luogo è stato teatro di eventi significativi nel corso dei secoli, comprese corti medievali e momenti cruciali nella formazione del Portogallo come nazione.
Oltre alla chiesa, Largo da Oliveira è noto per il Padrão do Salado, un monumento che celebra la vittoria di D. Afonso IV sui Mori nella battaglia di Salado nel 1340.
Da Largo da Oliveira si può vedere la chiesa di Nossa Senhora da Oliveira - Colegiada de Guimarães, le cui origini risalgono ad un monastero fondato nella prima metà del X secolo dalla contessa Mumadona Dias. La chiesa attuale fu costruita nel 1387 per ordine del re D. João I, seguendo modelli di architettura gotica.
La Cattedrale di Braga è uno dei monumenti più emblematici e storici del Portogallo. Situata nella città di Braga, questa cattedrale cattolica testimonia la ricchezza culturale e religiosa del paese. La sua costruzione risale alla fine dell'XI secolo, essendo stata sacra e dedicata alla Vergine Maria dal vescovo D. Pedro nel 10891. La Cattedrale di Braga è considerata la prima cattedrale portoghese, costruita diversi decenni prima della fondazione della nazione stessa.
Il Santuario del Bom Jesus do Monte è un gioiello dell'architettura e del paesaggio religioso, situato a Braga. Con oltre 600 anni di storia, questo luogo di pellegrinaggio cristiano è un notevole esempio dei Sacri Monti europei, creati dopo il Concilio di Trento nel XVI secolo. La Via Crucis del santuario, che si snoda sul fianco della montagna, è composta da cappelle, fontane e sculture rappresentanti la Passione di Cristo, culminando nella chiesa neoclassica costruita tra il 1784 e il 1811. La Scala dei Cinque Sensi, opera barocca, è un degli elementi più emblematici dell'insieme, che simboleggiano i sensi umani attraverso fontane e statue. Bom Jesus do Monte è stato riconosciuto Patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'UNESCO nel 2019, distinguendosi per la sua armoniosa integrazione con il paesaggio naturale e la sua importanza culturale e spirituale. Il santuario offre viste panoramiche su Braga ed è una testimonianza della tradizione religiosa e dell'influenza della Chiesa cattolica nella regione.

The stop and sites were beautiful. Rick was a wonderful guide and explained the history of each stop. Small group was perfect. I don’t think it would be as enjoyable tour if it was a large group.

Our guide was Diana; although we had booked the tour in English, since we were all Spanish speakers, she made the effort to do it in Spanish. Everything she told us was very interesting, the history, the legends/traditions 😜 Very kind, she drove the van herself, and by the way, she drives very well, very carefully; she would drop us off at one point to take a tour and pick us up at another point, so we didn't have to walk back. The tour is 100% recommended and Diana is a fantastic guide. Thank you Diana

I sign up for English Braga and Guimares Medieval Tour. We got mix with a Portuguese couple not by choice which became a big problem. Diana our tour guide because they speak same Portuguese language our tour became a disaster. She spends most time with them, elaborate more on Portuguese than English.Diana became and serve as their private tour guide than the group tour guide. I was very disappointed with this tour. This tour should have been worth it but became not our moneys worth. It's a waste of our time

Ivo was a very personable and knowledgeable tour guide. Our tour occurred when the area was experiencing an extreme heat wave and we were traveling with an elderly family member. Ivo was able to adapt our tour to ensure my Mom got an excellent experience despite not being able to walk for long periods of time in the extreme heat. The tour itself was fantastic, with many sites being firsts for us and Ivo explained the history of the sites while also providing insight into the local culture. Great experience. Diana is very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information on local history and culture. She always made sure to answer all our questions.
