My partner and I hopped off the train at 6am to get to the Fushimi Inari early and were greeted by Yugo, a Japanese university student, who offered to tour us around. He was very kind, polite and very knowledgeable in Japanese culture! We would highly recommend a tour from Yugo if you are planning on a trip to Kyoto!

I visited with my husband, and we had the pleasure of being guided by this lovely uni student Yugo, who took us to the sento(onsen) Chojayu that was built 100 years ago. He was kind and welcoming, and thanks to him we were able to see behind the scenes of the sento while learning about its history and cultural significance. The sento experience itself was amazing. The baths were deeply relaxing, with super hot water. Just looking at the sento building we were able to feel the history. Some might think the tour is a bit pricey, but it was definitely worth it for the quality of the experience and the insight we gained. Yugo is a student in Kyoto and knows so many great local spots, he also gave us excellent food recommendations, which we really appreciated. If you want to experience unique Japanese culture in a genuine and meaningful way, I would definitely recommend trying this. This private Kyoto sento tour with an English guide was a truly special experience that went far beyond simply “taking a bath.” At Choja-yu, a historic bathhouse founded in 1917, we were able to visit places that are normally off-limits, such as the well, the boiler room, and the traditional furnace. By seeing these behind-the-scenes areas, I could really understand how the bathhouse heats its water and how it has supported the daily life of the local community for more than a century. The guide’s explanations about the history, architecture, and bathing culture were clear and easy to follow, and everything made much more sense. Finally, being able to use the sento as a private bath made the experience even more special, because I could enjoy the bath with a deeper understanding of its background and meaning. This tour is not just sightseeing, but a wonderful way to truly learn about Japanese culture.
