"Go to the Zoo" Instead

We had booked a private tour for 10 people to go see the ecological reserve for a day. The tour driver arrived hours late to pick us up, then informed us that they could NOT provide the tour. (The driver suggested we "go to the zoo," instead the ecological reserve. I wasn't sure if he was joking or not.) The driver left, saying the tour company would contact us about the cancellation and would provide a FULL refund. Since BM Tours did NOT contact us - and stopped answering our calls or replying to our voicemails - I submitted a request to TripAdvisor/Viator. I received an automated email response with only a partial refund - for a third of what I had originally paid. I called (TripAdvisor) to inquire. They could not provide any explanations - or provide the FULL refund for services NOT received (due to the tour company's cancellation that was NOT our fault). I have reached out to my credit card company to investigate.

Réponse de l'opérateur

Dear [Client Name], I am writing to you personally to offer our sincerest apologies for the frustration and inconvenience you experienced regarding your booking for the Churute Ecological Reserve. We completely understand your dissatisfaction; receiving a partial refund for a service that could not be provided is not the experience we want for our clients. We would like to clarify that the cancellation of your excursion for 10 people was strictly due to a force majeure event. That morning, heavy rains caused a bridge collapse that completely blocked the only land access to the reserve. For safety reasons, which are our absolute priority, it was impossible for us to carry out the transfer. Our team attempted to offer alternatives at the time to save your day of activities, but we fully understand and respect that these were not of interest to you.

Trip to Charute Reserve

This is a great trip. Jamie our guide was very engaging and knowledgeable. He made the 1 hour drive to the reserve through rural Ecuador very interesting. The boat trip itself snd the forest hike were very good, although the monkeys were on siesta by the time we did the walk.

“What a great review! We will pass on your congratulations to Jamie; he works hard to share the richness of rural Ecuador. Although the monkeys were resting that day, we are glad that the forest and boat experience was fantastic. Thank you for choosing us to explore our biodiversity!”

Interesting, Fun, and Memorable

Such a wonderful experience. Our guide Jamie was knowledgeable, thoughtful and accommodating. He was flexible on our start time pick up from our hotel, and really gave us great knowledge throughout the day. The cruise along the Mangroves to see the birds and the trip to the forest preserve to see the howler monkeys were definitely worth the trip. Thank you!

Mangroves boat tour and jungle walk to see Howler Monkeys

This trip was an amazing experience that we had booked as an add on to our trip to Ecuador . It was well worth the cost as it was a private tour for just us and our driver/ guide knew where to take us and stayed with us for each part of the walking and boating tour. With our guide Jamie, We were able to see everything that was listed in the brochure at a very leisurely pace, that our guide had great history with the area and the people that ran the tour. If you get to Guayaquil in Ecuador book this side trip as it was really interesting at a relaxed pace.

Nice trip

It was a nice experience. Saw a good number of birds and the mangroves were beautiful. However, I don't think it was worth the amount of money that I paid. Much too expensive for what was experienced.

Felt like you were walking in the jungle

Our guide was excellent and full of interesting information. Days before our trip they received a lot of rain. River was very high on our river. Due to high tide we did not see as many animals (alligators & etc) but we saw many beautiful birds. Still an enjoyable boat trip. Walking through the jungle to waterfall was fun but very hot. Bring water, bug spray and hiking shoes. As you will be climbing over rocks and stumps. The noise from the monkeys and other creatures made you feel you were truely waking in the jungle. We saw howling monkeys very high in the treetops. Due to rains part of the howling monkey path was closed. Tour guides did their best as there's not much we could do due weather related issues. In the end we really enjoyed our tour.

Great trip, excellent guide

Awesome experience. We originally booked this tour, but was contacted by the tour operator that due to a scheduling conflict we would be joining additional people, but received a free upgrade for a full-day tour including visiting a cacao farm and lunch. Just reviewing the Ecological Reserve part of the day, it was a great half-day with a super kind and friendly guide! Jaime is the man. The boat tour in the mangroves was really nice, and the hike was short but enjoyable with lots of howler monkeys, despite all the mosquitos (bring bug spray and long pants/shirts!). Overall a great trip with an exceptional guide, but recommend booking for the full-day tour with the cacao farm as well, instead of just the reserve!

Hello Matthew! The Churute Mangroves + Cocoa Farm is definitely one of our best recommendations, the tour is so fun and the food super delicious. We are glad you had a good time, and we hope to see you again soon! :)

Marvelous mangroves

Terrific adventure with a charming guide, Hymie. He picked us up from our hotel in Guayaquil and promptly told us to go back to our rooms and out on long pants and shirts to minimize mosquito bites. Great tip. Then he regaled us with stories of his service with the air force and Latam airlines. His English was fantastic and he was so considerate. He pointed out some fabulous fruit and fish markets along the way and then we met with a local guide, Carlos, required for the area. We had a hike of about 2 miles in a loop through the jungle spotting and hearing several packs of howler monkeys and native birds. Some interesting tarantula webs and flora too, including a tree that’s sap smells like garlic - a natural insect repellent. We then went on to the mangroves for a fun trip down the river. Our guides spotted a few shy caimans, fish, and birds galore. Fun day!
