Deux mille ans d'histoire fascinante prennent vie au Colisée, l'arène de la Rome antique où se déroulaient les combats de gladiateurs. Le Colisée est une prouesse d'ingénierie étonnante et un témoignage du génie technique de la Rome antique.
L'Arc de Constantin est l'un des nombreux arcs de triomphe de la Rome antique, assis sur la place juste à l'extérieur du Colisée. Son emplacement était important dans l'Antiquité, reliant la zone du Forum romain aux principaux complexes de divertissement et de bains publics du centre de Rome.
Le Circus Maximus était le plus grand stade de la Rome antique, célèbre pour ses courses de chars (vous vous souvenez du film "Ben Hur" ?) Une piste allongée et elliptique avec une île centrale, le Circus Maximus pouvait accueillir 250 000 personnes, soit un quart de la population de Rome dans l'ancienne fois.
Les découvertes archéologiques montrent que la colline du Palatin était habitée dès le Xe siècle avant JC, mais ses jours de gloire étaient à l'époque de l'Empire romain, alors qu'il s'agissait essentiellement des Beverly Hills de Rome. La noblesse romaine avait ses maisons ici, y compris l'empereur, qui pouvait regarder les courses de chars depuis son palais.
La colline du Capitole est la plus petite et la plus importante des sept collines de la Rome antique. En tant que cœur politique et religieux de Rome, la colline du Capitole est devenue un symbole du règne de Rome en tant que Caput Mundi, capitale du monde. Construit il y a plus de 1800 ans, le magnifique Panthéon rappelle encore le grand Empire romain. Le nom Panthéon fait référence à la fonction originale du bâtiment en tant que temple pour tous les dieux. La structure est célèbre pour son beau dôme à caissons, une œuvre étonnante et mystifiante d'architecture et d'ingénierie, avec un oculus gigantesque au centre. NOTE : La vue du Panthéon depuis l'extérieur est gratuite. Depuis juillet 2023, un billet est nécessaire pour visiter l'intérieur du pays. Le billet coûte 10 euros par personne. Si vous souhaitez entrer à l'intérieur du Panthéon, veuillez nous demander de réserver pour vous.
Croyez-le ou non, la fontaine de Trevi est toujours alimentée par un ancien aqueduc - l'Aqua Virgo, construit en 19 av. La fontaine baroque élaborée du Bernin, chef-d'œuvre de figures mythiques en travertin, est la fontaine la plus reconnaissable au monde.
La basilique Saint-Pierre se trouve de l'autre côté du Tibre depuis le centre historique de Rome. Le lieu est hautement symbolique ; c'était le site où saint Pierre mourut en martyr et où il fut enterré en 64 après JC. L'église massive, avec son magnifique dôme conçu par Michel-Ange, abrite de nombreuses œuvres d'art, dont la Pietà la plus célèbre de Michel-Ange. À cet arrêt, vous aurez le temps de voir l'église et la place de l'extérieur ; nous n'entrerons pas dans la basilique.
La colline verdoyante du Janicule est parsemée de monuments dédiés à Garibaldi et à son armée de fortune, qui ont mené de féroces batailles dans la lutte pour l'unification italienne à cet endroit en 1849. Le héros italien est commémoré par un monument massif sur la Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi, tandis que son fils d'origine brésilienne femme, Anita, a son propre monument à environ 200 mètres sur la Piazzale Anita Garibaldi. Anita est morte du paludisme, avec leur enfant à naître, peu de temps après le siège.

With Rome’s distance from the port, this small group tour is the way to go! We really enjoyed our day with Federico! He was an excellent driver, showing us “alternate routes” (hee-hee) to many places. He was very knowledgeable about all the sites and Rome’s history without overwhelming us with too many facts and details. His recommendation for lunch was fabulous! Experience could have been better. Our driver/guide did not offer any history information and/or didn’t communicate about a location/site until we were practically past it. Didn’t realize we missed a few things around the coliseum until we had left because he wasn’t forthcoming with information. Where he took us for lunch was amazing. Then we were only supposed to be at St. Paul’s cathedral for an hour, he said 2 hours. We didn’t want to wait 2 hours as we just wanted a pic outside, had no interest in going in, but the other group with us did. So, we took and paid for a taxi to take us back to port. Next time we do a tour like this, we will do it with just our group. We spent more time today waiting for the other people in our van than we were at some sites. For what we paid, should have been more accommodating for both groups. This was supposed to be a highlights tour, not a detailed tour of sites.

For this reason, the route, stops, and timing cannot be customized according to one individual traveler’s preferences. As described in the service details, our English-speaking driver provides live commentary onboard during transit between stops. While the driver is not a licensed walking guide and therefore cannot accompany guests on foot at each site, they do provide clear instructions and orientation before guests explore independently. Regarding the stop at St. Peter’s Basilica, the timing at each location may vary slightly depending on traffic, group pace, and operational conditions on the day. Since this was a shared experience, the schedule also needed to accommodate the interests of all participants in the vehicle. We understand that shared tours may not be ideal for travelers seeking a more personalized pace or the flexibility to skip certain stops. In that case, a private tour would indeed be the more suitable option, as it allows full customization of the itinerary and timing based solely on your group’s preferences. Great day with Ricardo. He made sure we got to see all of the highlights. Due to passenger van we could get so much closer than in a bus so less walking to the sites. He was knowledgeable and entertaining.

Excellent experience with Riccardo has our driver. He was prompt meeting us at the cruise port and assisted us with our luggage. He gave thought and added special stops to our day in Rome.
