Description
Chennai, anciennement Madras, était la capitale du sud de l'Inde britannique. De nombreux points de repère incroyables ont été travaillés pendant la domination britannique et certains d'entre eux continuent de submerger l'horizon de Chennai, même aujourd'hui. Dans cette visite flâneuse, nous visiterons une partie des jalons indubitables de Chennai, qui ont été travaillés à l'époque britannique dans un style d'ingénierie mélangeant des composants britanniques et indiens. Nous commencerons à la gare centrale et nous nous promènerons jusqu'au bâtiment Ripon, au siège du chemin de fer du sud, au mémorial de la victoire, au fort St George, au pont Naper et terminerons au bâtiment de l'université de Madras.

Conçu par G.S.T. Harris. et construit par Loganatha Mudaliar, le bâtiment Ripon porte le nom de Lord Ripon, gouverneur général de l'Inde britannique, connu pour être le père de l'autonomie locale à Chennai. Aujourd'hui, ce bâtiment est le bureau du maire de Chennai.
Aujourd'hui, cette gare accueille plus de 350 000 passagers chaque jour. La gare centrale a été construite en 1873 dans un style néo-gothique par l'architecte britannique George Harding. Il a été modifié par Robert Chisholm qui a ajouté la tour de l'horloge centrale et des chapeaux de Travancore sur les tours principales.
Nous nous dirigeons ensuite vers le siège de Southern Railways en Inde. Construit dans le style indo-sarrasin, ce bâtiment a été conçu par N. Grayson et construit par Samynada Pillai. Il a été achevé en 1921. Le siège social du Southern Railway a été l'un des premiers bâtiments en Inde à être construit en béton armé.
Le Victory War Memorial, anciennement appelé l'arc de Cupidon, est un mémorial construit pour commémorer la victoire des armées alliées pendant la Première Guerre mondiale (1914-1918). Il devint plus tard le mémorial de guerre de la victoire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1939-1945), érigé à la mémoire de ceux de la présidence de Madras qui ont perdu la vie dans les guerres.
Nous visiterons l'église St Mary, la plus ancienne église anglicane de l'Inde. Nous visiterons également un musée pittoresque riche en reliques de l'époque coloniale.La promenade de l'architecture britannique à Chennai nous amène au Fort Saint George, la première forteresse anglaise construite en 1644 par la Compagnie des Indes orientales. Il y a une statue de 14,5 pieds de haut de Lord Cornwallis devant le musée, qui est un chef-d'œuvre. Attention, le musée est fermé le vendredi. Fort St. George est actuellement le siège de l'Assemblée législative de l'État du Tamilnadu.
Le pont étroit a été élargi et converti en une structure en béton et a été ouvert au grand public en juillet 1943. Ce pont est souvent utilisé par les médias pour représenter la ville de Chennai ! Le pont Napier a été construit en 1869 sur la rivière Coovum et porte le nom du gouverneur britannique de Fort St George, Francis Napier. Il relie la Marina au Fort St George.
Ce chef-d'œuvre a été construit entre avril 1874 et 1879. Il comprend une salle de convocation, des portiques, un parapet, des salles de réunion et une bibliothèque. Le Sénat est le centre administratif de l'Université de Madras. Il est situé le long de la Marina Beach. Construit par Robert Chisholm, le bâtiment du Sénat est considéré comme un excellent exemple du style indo-sarrasin avec un mélange harmonieux d'éléments architecturaux byzantins.
