A stunning Maori experience

We did this incredible experience in March. Three distinct experiences, all fantastic in their own right. First, an excellent guided tour of the Thermal Park and Maori cultural activities. So much to see and learn. Second, an amazing Hangi Buffet - a relaxed Maori eating experience with so many things to try! Thirdly, a stunning Maori cultural experience performed live. Only one word to sum up the evening - Wow, Wow, Wow!!! Surely the best overall Maori experince in Rotorua! Exceptional. Very highly recommended.

Intensive cultural immersion in a natural setting

An immersive cultural experience in a natural setting affording insights into Maori culture from knowledgeable guides. There's reverent acknowledge for their traditional practices like the haka done in respectful silence. Accentuating the experience were the striking natural geysers - I avoided the tacky night light show. There's an ample dinner buffet. Too bad there weren't any Maori specialties to try. All in all one of the highlights of my New Zealand trip.

Amazing cultural experience!

Fantastic night at Te Puia! Our guide, Mere, was so engaging and did an amazing job sharing the history of the land and helping us understand more about the Māori culture as we went through the night. The cultural performance was stunning - you could tell that the performers loved sharing these pieces of their culture, and we enjoyed every second. The hāngī buffet dinner was delicious - we loved trying all the different foods and deserts. Highly recommend this experience!

Tēnā koe (hello), Really appreciate you taking the time to share this, sounds like you had a pretty special evening with us. Awesome to hear Mere made such a strong impression, she’s great at bringing the stories of this whenua (land) and our culture to life in a way that feels real and easy to connect with. Glad to hear you enjoyed the cultural performance too, our performers put a lot of heart into what they do so it means a lot hearing it came through. And good to know the hāngī buffet hit the mark, especially getting to try a bit of everything. Thanks again for the recommendation, hope we can welcome you back again sometime. Kia pai te rā (have a nice day)

Cultural Tour

A guided experience through culture center. Love how they are keeping the old traditions alive through there program. I would have given a higher rating but our guild was not very informative. We could hear other tour guilds giving way more information. The dinner was delicious. And I recommend walking back to the geothermal area after the program for a quieter experience.

The whole experience...

The whole experience feels a bit tourist trap and unauthentic. Yet to know that the money goes to fund the school of arts and crafts makes one feel good about it! Do stay after the Māori ceremony and visit the geyser once more!

tēnā koe (hello), Thanks for sharing your thoughts and being open about how the experience felt for you. We understand that with a place many people come to visit it can sometimes feel a bit touristy, but our aim is always to give visitors a genuine look into Māori culture, our geothermal landscape, and the stories of this place. We’re glad you enjoyed your time at the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute. It is a special part of Te Puia where traditional carving and weaving are taught and carried on for future generations. Ngā mihi (thank you) again for visiting and for sharing your feedback. kia pai te rā (have a nice day)

A tourist trap

We were really looking forward to this to learn more about the Māori culture. Unfortunately it was just an expensive ($170/person) tourist trap. Our guide couldn’t answer the basic questions about the Māori culture. She just walked the large group around the geysers making sure no one got run over by the shuttles. We were really interested in the Māori arts and crafts but none of the artisans were working close enough to even see what they were doing, let alone ask questions. The main purpose of the arts and crafts building was to take you to their “gallery” hoping you would spend lots of money buying their crafts. Dinner was just a basic buffet with nothing special—we’ve had similar buffets in the US. The evening entertainment program was interesting but had a “doo wop” feel. Please use traditional musical Māori instruments instead of a modern guitar (if the Māori had traditional instruments). Also please train your people that people from the United States are from the United States, not America (Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, etc are also Americans—America is a continent not a country)

tēnā koe (hello) Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. I’m sorry the visit didn’t land the way you were expecting, especially since you came hoping to learn more about Māori culture. Around the geyser areas our guides do need to balance sharing kōrero (stories) with keeping everyone safe, especially when groups are on the larger side. Even then, questions should always be handled properly, so we’ll check in with the team about that. At the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, the carving and weaving spaces aren’t staged displays. Our tauira (students) and tohunga (experts) work on real long term pieces, and depending on the day their stations might be closer or further from visitors. The gallery is there to show the level of craftsmanship in those finished taonga (treasures), with no pressure to buy. For the cultural performance, the guitar is the only contemporary instrument we use. Everything else you hear on stage comes from traditional Māori instruments. Modern guitar has become part of many cultural performances across Aotearoa, so the show blends traditional and contemporary styles in a way that reflects how Māori performing arts are practiced today. Even though your visit wasn’t the experience you were hoping for, we appreciate you sharing your feedback. kia pai te rā (have a nice day)

Lamentable

Far too expensive for this tourist catch. We took the combo to spend an unforgettable evening. It was... but in the wrong way. It’s hardly if you see the kiwis, the meal is more than mediocre, the drinks not included are overpriced, the show rings false... the group is huge. Anyway. It is a special activity tour operator. If you are looking for authenticity, run away!

Tēnā koe (hello) Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We’re really sorry to hear that the experience didn’t meet your expectations, especially when you were hoping for something special in the evening. That’s not the feeling we want anyone to leave with. We take all feedback seriously, including the points you raised about the kai (food), drink prices, and the cultural performance. Your comments help us look at where we can improve and how we can make the visit feel more authentic and welcoming for everyone. We appreciate you letting us know how it felt from your side, and we’ll take your comments on board as we keep working to improve what we offer here at Te Puia and the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute. Fantastic experience and highly recommend!

We had a fantastic time on our tour. Ivy was a wonderful guide through the park, and the cultural show was truly outstanding. What really made our experience special, though, was K — our friendly host in the black cowboy hat. After the show, he took extra time to share personal insights into Māori culture, showed us areas of the park we hadn’t seen during the tour, and answered all our questions in such a thoughtful, unhurried way. He is a genuine credit to the team here, and we can’t recommend him highly enough. He truly made our visit unforgettable.

Tēnā koe (hello) Thank you so much for taking the time to share this, it really means a lot to our kaimahi (team). We are so happy to hear you had such a great time at Te Puia and that Ivy helped make your tour around the park enjoyable and memorable. It is also awesome to hear how much you loved the cultural performance, that is always a special part of the experience for many of our manuhiri (visitors). K sounds like he truly left a lasting impression. Taking the time to share personal stories, answer questions and show you a bit more of Te Puia is exactly the kind of manaakitanga (hospitality) we love to see. We will be sure to pass your kind words on to him, he will really appreciate it. Thank you again for recommending him and for such a heartfelt review, we are stoked to know your visit was one to remember. Kia pai te rā (have a nice day)

Complete

The facilities are wonderful, the organization excellent, all extremely friendly. The experience is comprehensive, showing from Maori culture in art, dance, songs, folklore, habits, to the geological characteristics of the environment. We were lucky to see the geyser in action, but we did not see the kiwi. The buffet was very good, full and varied, highlighting the gravy ham and kawakawa ice cream, surprising. I just don't give the maximum score because the groups in the guided part are very large, I couldn't listen or understand right what the guide was talking about, and there were many to see the same object being commented. As we don't follow right ends up getting boring.I think it's a visit format to be re-evaluated by the direction.
