Cette cathédrale catholique, érigée en flèche, à deux pas de la plage, a été fondée par les Portugais en 1523, puis reconstruite par les Britanniques dans un style néo-gothique en 1896, et est censée marquer le dernier lieu de repos de saint Thomas l'apôtre. On croit que 'Thomas incrédule' a amené le christianisme sur le sous-continent en 52 après JC et a été tué à St Thomas Mount, Chennai, en 72. Bien que la plupart des restes de saint Thomas reposent apparemment en Italie, une croix sur le mur de la tombe contient un minuscule fragment d'os portant l'inscription «Relic of St Thomas». Le musée ci-dessus expose des artefacts liés à Thomas, dont le lance-lance qui aurait été tué. Le pôle Saint-Thomas, situé à l'extrémité de la plage située du côté sud de la cathédrale, aurait miraculeusement sauvé la cathédrale du tsunami de 2004.
Little Mount est une grotte dans laquelle saint Thomas s'est caché en 68 après JC et a fait pénitence. Il y a une ouverture à l'est de la grotte par laquelle Saint Thomas s'est échappé lorsque ses poursuivants l'ont rattrapé ici. L’empreinte de la paume et de la main près de l’entrée du tunnel serait celle de Saint Thomas lui-même. Nous verrons également la croix de maçonnerie coupée au sommet de la colline qui est supposée être la croix devant laquelle saint Thomas a prié. Un autre aspect intéressant de cette grotte est la source à l’intérieur de la colline, qui est une plante vivace et qui est supposée être la création miraculeuse de saint Thomas lui-même.
Le site réputé du martyre de saint Thomas en l'an 72 se situe au sud-ouest de Chennai, à 2,5 km au nord de la gare et de la station de métro de St Thomas Mount. L’église Notre-Dame de l’attente, construite au sommet de la «montagne» par les Portugais en 1523, contient ce qui est censé être un fragment d’os de doigt de Thomas et la «croix de saignement» qu’il a sculptée. La vue sur la ville et l'aéroport est magnifique.

It was a great experience. My guide, Rajesh was very polite and is knowledgable of the locations. I managed to even attend the mass at the Tomb of St Thomas (although that take a bit more time). I also was able to be inside the cave at the Mount of St Thomas where St Thomas prayed. Then we ended it at the St Thomas Basilica where the blood of St Thomas was spilled. I was able to touch it and say my prayers. It was well worth it.

Positive: Close to points to see, driver very available, very friendly guide and knew how to adapt his English (rhythm...) to our level of language. Medium: lunch (too spicy), we regretted not being able to get close to the source that we could see from a distance through a gap in the rock Negative: too expensive for what there was to see
