This tour was one of the best we have done. The 1/4 mile walk is very much over exaggerated. We wore flip-flops, and it wasn't an issue. The meet up is a stone's throw from the port gate, and the tour operator has massive signs easily seen in the crowd. The excursion description isn't terribly specific on here, so here goes: Viator organizes transportation and admission to THREE separate experiences. 1st is the monkey/sloth/macaw sanctuary, where you will get to interact (hold) monkeys and Mccaws, but NOT sloth (by law). You may get as close as you like and even feed them, but nobody can legally allow holding of sloth in Roatan anymore. Our guide was Robert, who was very relaxed and allowed us as much time in the enclosures as we desired. 2nd is the Iguana sanctuary. Our very informative guide there was Vanessa. She also treated us like royalty, and was generous with her time. You'll get to feed Iguanas, and view some very large fish being fed plus more mccaws. 3rd is the beach excursion, which we had little info on. Its a short, free, boat ride (3 minutes) to a resort-type situation with sandy beaches, plenty of shade and oodles of chairs (there were 4 ships in port today, and we walked right up to water- side chairs for our party of 4). They have proper bathrooms, outdoor showers, and places to change clothes if you don't want to wear beach attire to play with monkeys. They DO NOT provide towels, so bring some off the ship. The beach experience has plenty of food for purchase and reasonable (for tourist prices anyway...) drinks. The beach staff will offer to set up umbrellas if your chair isn't already shaded, and they aren't trying to upcharge you for everything once there. We ended up having the same amazing, friendly, and knowledgeable driver all day - Thank you Jenny! She was able to drop us off inside the port a few yards from the initial ID scanner. We would book this one a dozen times again. If you're on the fence, time to book it.
The monkeys were cute and friendly as they used to be held and fed by the tourists. The sloths were active-for them. The macaws were beautiful and we were able to feed one. The guide was knowledgeable. There was some disorganization as they try to have too many groups at one time. Some of the walkways were falling apart.
We chose this excursion while on a cruise and it did not disappoint! Getting off the ship was a little overwhelming but everyone at the port was so friendly helping us find our escort. Ana had a super close parking spot (which I'm sure she had to get up real early to grab) so we didn't have to walk far. She took us to the monkey/sloth sanctuary and made sure we got there early so we didn't have to wait too long. The guys at the exhibit mentioned that if the sloths get overstimulated then they have to go back in the trees and then people wouldn't get too hold them. So we were very happy to be there early in the morning and get to hold them. Luke was our guide and he was fantastic. Very informative and made sure we knew how to stay safe with the animals while keeping them safe too. He made sure we all got to hold each animal and get pictures too. We went to the beach after. We rode a boat over to an island that had caged Tigers and a real cute beach spot with food and drinks. Ana made sure to keep us safe going back to the ship and had towels in her van for us to sit on since we were wet from the beach. This was such a fun excursion and I would definitely do it again!
This is hands-on encounters with native wildlife. We had a private driver and personal attention at each location.
