We had an absolutely wonderful experience on this tour, and a big part of what made the day so special was our guide, Claudia. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us excellent recommendations throughout the entire day. Our first stop was Pisa, where we had plenty of time to visit the Piazza dei Miracoli and take pictures with the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Claudia also drove us through other parts of the city and showed us Pisa’s historic university area. One of the most interesting things she explained was the history of a historic church near the Arno River that was dismantled and reconstructed on higher ground because of the flooding problems the area experienced over the centuries. It was great to experience more of Pisa than just the Leaning Tower. From there, we continued to the beautiful walled city of Lucca. We explored the historic center, its churches, piazzas, and impressive city walls. Claudia gave us an excellent recommendation to stop at the historic Pasticceria Taddeucci (Buccellato Taddeucci), established in 1881 in Piazza San Michele. There we were able to try several traditional sweets, including the famous Buccellato di Lucca, a traditional Lucchese sweet bread made with raisins and anise; Panforte al Cioccolato, a rich Tuscan chocolate version of panforte with nuts and dried fruit; and Torta al Cioccolato. We enjoyed them with coffee and cappuccino. Claudia’s recommendation was excellent, and it gave us another opportunity to experience authentic local flavors while exploring Lucca. The highlight of the day was our visit to Fattoria Enzo Carmignani, a small family-run winery in the hills of Montecarlo di Lucca. The winery has been in the Carmignani family since 1386, and it truly felt like an authentic Tuscan family experience rather than a large commercial winery. The food at the winery was exceptional. Throughout the tasting we were served a variety of homemade Tuscan dishes, including bruschetta with fresh tomatoes and basil, local cured meats, crostini with sausage and melted cheese, vegetable frittata, handmade ravioli with butter and herbs, gnocchi with pesto, traditional Tuscan bread dishes, and homemade dessert with fruit. We were also able to taste approximately 6–8 wines of excellent quality, from a selection that included Tentazione IGT, Urano IGT, Montecarlo Bianco DOC, Kapogiro Rosé IGT, Intrigo, Montecarlo Rosso DOC, Theorema IGT, Vin Santo DOC, and Vino Aleatico IGT. What made the winery experience particularly special was the food and wine pairing. With the different wines, we were served foods specifically selected to complement them. Instead of simply tasting one wine after another, we could experience how the correct pasta, meats, cheeses, and other Tuscan dishes enhanced the flavors of each wine. It made the tasting much more enjoyable and turned it into a complete culinary experience. At the end, we were served Vin Santo DOC, Tuscany’s traditional sweet dessert wine. It was served in a small glass almost like an after-dinner drink and was the perfect way to finish the tasting. Fattoria Enzo Carmignani is a small, local, family-run winery with exceptional-quality wines and outstanding homemade food. The intimate setting, beautiful Tuscan countryside, food pairings, and personal attention made it one of the highlights of our entire trip. Thank you, Claudia, for an excellent day, for sharing so much history with us, and especially for all of your wonderful recommendations. We would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Livorno who wants to experience Pisa, Lucca, authentic Tuscan food, and a genuine family winery.
This trip was ideal to spend a day in part of Tuscany from pick up and fine times to spend in the cities we really had a brilliant day
We booked this excursion during our stop in Livorno while sailing on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's Evrima, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Our driver, Carlo, was fantastic. Although technically a driver, he provided a steady stream of interesting commentary throughout the day, sharing local history, insights into modern Italian life, and pointing out landmarks along the route, including castle ruins and Roman aqueducts. We began with a stop at a hidden gem in Pisa before visiting the Piazza dei Miracoli and climbing the Leaning Tower (tickets purchased separately). From there, we continued into the Tuscan countryside for a wonderful wine tasting and lunch at Fattoria Carmignani, a family-run winery dating back to 1386. Our final stop was the beautiful medieval town of Lucca, where Carlo provided a map and recommendations for exploring on our own. Every part of the day was thoughtfully organized, and Carlo's knowledge, enthusiasm, and professionalism made the experience especially memorable. We only wished we had more time in Lucca! Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience Pisa, Tuscany, and Lucca in a single day.
This was an amazing tour! Nikki was very informative and answered all questions we had. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the winery and sampling the different wines and the pairings that went with them. The country side was beautiful. Pisa was just as expected and was an awesome to experience.
We had a great tour with Nikki and Sabrina. We went to the leaning tower of Pisa, rode a bike on the city wall of Lucca and had lunch at a local winery. The overall experience is wonderful and it turned out to be the excursion that our family (7 adults and 5 kids) enjoyed the most among our four excursions in Italy.
We cannot express enough our gratitude and gratefulness to Nikki. Amazingly knowledgeable and personable, and she is fun to see the sights with. It was more like traveling with a very smart friend. We saw Pisa, Lucca (which was incredible), and we had a private tasting at a Tuscan winery. The staff there were also amazing. We could not have ask for more and we would more than HIGHLY RECOMMEND Nikki and this incredible tour. Cheers!
Ragazzi, Thanks so much for your beautiful review! I had a lot of fun with the two of you, and I'm delighted you enjoyed the places we visited. When you come back to Tusany, I would be very pleased to be your very smart friend again :) Abbracci (hugs). Nicoletta
This was a lovely way to spend a day in Tuscany. It was a slower paced alternative to many “see all the sights in one day” excursions. We enjoyed having the time to explore Pisa and Lucca at our own pace. The lunch at the winery was superb! Fresh tomatoes from the onsite garden and the ravioli was amazing. We had travelers who needed gluten free options and the winery delivered. Our companions commented that it was the best gluten free ravioli they had ever eaten. I highly recommend this excursion.
Thanks kindly for taking the time to write a review! I’m delighted you were satisfied with your service. I hope you think of me when you return to this part of the Mediterranean. Grazie Niki
Claudia our driver did a great job getting us to Pisa, Lucca and the winery. Her commentary was meaningful, and timing was prompt. All 8 of us enjoyed our day in Tuscany
Grazie mille for your kind review! I’m very happy to know you were pleased with your tour. I hope to see you again soon in Italy.
