La région des Météores couvre quelques kilomètres carrés, où une ancienne communauté monastique et un rare phénomène géologique composé d'immenses piliers rocheux coexistent en parfaite harmonie. Située à la pointe nord-ouest de la plaine de Thessalie, la région des Météores est devenue aujourd'hui l'une des destinations les plus populaires de la Grèce continentale. C'est un site classé au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, un site archéologique et officiellement déclaré lieu saint ! Au pied des rochers se trouvent 2 campements, la ville de Kalabaka et le village de Kastraki.
C'est une église incontournable, non seulement à cause de son âge et les précieuses fresques byzantines datant du XIe siècle, mais également en raison des matériaux de construction de ses murs. Les reliques d'un ancien temple grec consacré au dieu Apollon ont été incrustées dans le mur. À l'intérieur on peut également prêter attention au sol en mosaïque plus ancien qui se révèle à des endroits spécifiques sous le plancher actuel. C'est sans aucun doute l'une des plus précieuses basiliques de l'église primitive en Grèce et, aujourd'hui elle sert d'église active aux habitants.
C'est le monastère le plus accessible, où à la place de marches il vous suffit de traverser un petit pont pour atteindre l'entrée. C’est idéal pour les visiteurs qui ne peuvent pas monter les marches mais souhaitent quand même avoir une véritable expérience d'un monastère des Météores. Le début de la vie monastique sur le rocher d'Agios Stephanos remonte au début au XIIe siècle. Ses fondateurs seraient Hosios Antonios, dans la première moitié du XVe siècle, ainsi que Hosios Philotheos, qui en 1545 a rénové ou plutôt reconstruit sur ses fondations le petit et élégant Catholicon, l'église actuelle d'Agios Stephanos.

On l'appelait le monastère « suspendu dans les airs » (meteoro), en raison de la formation du gigantesque rocher au sommet duquel il a été construit. Le Monastère du Grand Météore a été fondé par Saint Athanasios le météorite, qui a été le premier fondateur du monastère et l'organisateur du koenovion systématique. Pour cette raison, la fondation de ce monastère est considérée comme tournant, ou même mieux, le début de l'excursion organisée monastisicm sur les montagnes sacrées de Météore.

Le saint Monastère de Roussanou doit probablement son nom au premier ermite qui s’est installé sur le rocher. La cathédrale principale a été fondée à la fin du XVIe siècle et a été décorée trente ans plus tard. Le rocher de Roussanou est moins élevé que d'autres formations où des monastères ont été construits, ce qui le rend plus accessible. Le monastère a été initialement fondé par des moines et a subi de graves dommages pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. C’est devenu un couvent en 1988.
Le saint Monastère de Varlaam est le deuxième par sa taille. Il est situé en face du monastère du Grand Météore et a été fondé au milieu du XIVe siècle par l’ascète Hosios Varlaam. L'élégant Catholicon du monastère a été construit en l'honneur d’Agioi Pantes en 1541-1542, par deux frères venant d’Ioannina, les prêtres-moines Hosioi Théophane et Nectaire surnommés les Apsarades. L’église principale a été décorée en 1548. D’après des critères stylistiques, cette magnifique fresque est attribuée au célèbre hagiographe de Thèbes, Frago Catelano.

- Les monastères imposent un code vestimentaire strict : les hommes doivent porter un pantalon et des manches longues, les femmes doivent porter une jupe longue. Si vous vous présentez en short, des pantalons et des jupes vous seront prêtés.

I pre-booked my sunset tour from Kalambaka via booking dot com but also pooped into the office to check few things and the lady there was so nice and helpful. On the day, they were so busy that a small group was created for the 6 of us with Chris (the best tour guide of all!!!) and we had a great time with him. He's shown us hidden places, he knew the answer to every question we had. And he is a great driver and a awesome person! But all the people I met (and I have met quite a few other guys who work there) were so accommodating and nice! I'd highly recommend this trip and company for anyone (couples / solo travellers) and from anywhere (Kalambaka, Thessaloniki, Athens) and their website is full of useful info about the monasteries and hiking routes (that's how I planned my stay + solo hikes and in 3 days, I visited all the monestaries) if you are planning to book a trip, look no further: choose the best!

This tour was fantastic, we all learned so much about the area from our tour guide, Chris: the history (both old & recent), the mythology, geology, religion, and local greek culture. Chris is incredibly well spoken, extremely knowledgable, keeps his audience interested, and he was lots of fun! We visited a monastery or two on our own, which was wonderful, and at the end he then gave us a personal tour of a special church to understand the meanings of what was inside. The mini-van was very comfortable; had a great driver and lots of special photo opportunities along the way. The staff at Visit Meteora were very helpful and flexible when I needed to change my pick up location at the last minuted. It all went smoothly. Chris provided personal service, asking for questions, engaging us in the talk, and even shared a bit of her personal life as he is from the area. Even gave some restaurant and Greek food recommendations! We all started out as strangers on the tour, but become friends, even if for a day, by the end of our tour. I highly recommend Visit Meteora and especially Chris' tour for a comprehensive understanding of Meteora, and because he makes it fun!

Dimitri/Jim was an exceptional guide. He is originally from Kalabaka and his deep love for Meteora and the surrounding region was present in every story he shared.
