Le monastère de Sanahin est un monastère arménien fondé au 10ème siècle dans la province de Lori en Arménie. Le nom Sanahin se traduit littéralement de l'arménien par "celui-ci est plus ancien que celui-ci", ce qui représente sans doute une prétention à avoir un monastère plus ancien que le monastère voisin de Haghpat. Les deux villages et leurs monastères se ressemblent à bien des égards et se superposent sur un plateau disséqué, séparés par une profonde "fissure" formée par une petite rivière se jetant dans la rivière Debed.

Le monastère a été fondé par la reine Khosrovanuysh, épouse du roi Bagratid Ashot III, probablement en 976. Le monastère voisin de Sanahin a été construit à peu près au même moment. L'emplacement du monastère de Haghpat a été choisi pour sa vue sur la rivière Debed dans la région de Lori, dans le nord de l'Arménie. Il a été construit, non pas sur un sommet, mais à mi-hauteur d'une colline sur un site choisi pour la protection et la dissimulation des regards indiscrets, ainsi que pour répondre à une sorte d'humilité monastique. Il est construit sur un promontoire verdoyant situé au milieu d'un cirque de montagnes, souvent entouré de nuages. Un pic de l'autre côté de la rivière culmine à plus de 2 500 mètres.

The organizer was responsive; the driver was great; the scenery stunning--highly recommend this tour service.
After some changes to my itinerary, I wound up reserving a car with a driver somewhat last-minute: I couldn't have been happier with the quick communications by the organizers; with the driver, who was delightful; and with the overall experience. The driver to Haghpat and its surroundings from Yerevan is long--but stunning. The monasteries are great. Highly recommend this.

If you are visiting Armenia, Sergey's tour is a must-do. The locations were very beautiful and featured a number of sites that were both aesthetically pleasing and had significant history. He also went above and beyond and took us to Zarni Parni upon our request, despite it not officially being part of the tour. Apart from the locations, the service was excellent. The vehicle was very comfortable and the driving was remarkably smooth (most importantly, there was air conditioning!) There were also amenities such as water provided free of charge which demonstrates the thoughtfulness of our guide. I highly recommend for anyone interesting in seeing stunning landscapes and constructions in great comfort to take this tour!
