Lors de cette visite, nous explorons le quartier animé de Georgetown. Cette zone se compose de bazars spécialisés bien établis, avec de petites rues sinueuses, des entrepôts, des marchés de gros couverts, des étals de rue et des magasins de détail. Appelée à l’origine «ville noire», la région a été créée à la fin des années 1600 après la fondation du Fort St. George. Les habitants se sont installés ici pour commercer et faire des affaires avec le fort. Une partie de la ville noire a été rasée dans les années 1700 afin de créer une zone dégagée à l’extérieur de Fort St George. Les habitants de Blacktown se sont installés juste au-delà de la zone ouverte, dans ce qu'on appelait la Nouvelle ville noire. Au milieu des années 1800, la zone ouverte (la vieille ville noire) a été utilisée pour construire le grand bâtiment de la Haute Cour de Madras. En 1910, lors de la visite du roi George en Inde, Blacktown fut renommé Georgetown. Aujourd'hui, Georgetown reste un marché très actif, vendant tout sous le soleil: bracelets, tissus, fruits, légumes, épices, papeterie, bijoux, etc.

La Haute Cour de Chennai, créée à l’origine en 1862 par un décret de la reine Victoria, est l’un des bâtiments les plus emblématiques de la ville. Connue pour sa grandeur et son architecture indo-saracéenne, la Haute Cour est au cœur du système juridique du Tamil Nadu depuis plus d’un siècle. Cependant, son histoire ne se limite pas à son rôle dans le droit et la justice. L'un des chapitres les plus dramatiques de son histoire s'est produit pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, quand, en 1914, le bâtiment a été pris pour cible par des sous-marins allemands dans une tentative de perturber le contrôle britannique sur ses territoires coloniaux.

Ce bâtiment emblématique de style Art déco est chargé d'histoire et a servi autrefois de siège à la société de Parry, fondée par Thomas Parry, un Gallois et l'un des premiers marchands libres de Chennai. Le bâtiment porte le nom de John Dare, partenaire commercial de Parry, reflétant leur rôle important dans la formation de l'héritage commercial de la ville. Aujourd’hui, il témoigne de leur esprit d’entreprise et de la grandeur architecturale d’une époque révolue.

NOTHING....the meeting point as stated in the booking confirmation was changed...even a policeman did not know where the location was. The guide took me down 1 part of the market and then told me the rest would not be open...he then took me on a walk through parts of George town...parts of it was scary...at 1 point we went down stairs and under an isolated dingy and flooded bridge. As for the water and snacks that was part of the package...I recieved nothing...what a rip off
