Un site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Shantiniketan signifie la demeure de la paix – bien avant qu'il ne devienne le nom d'un lieu, c'était le nom de la maison d'hôtes que Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, père du poète Rabindranath Tagore, avait construite. On pense que le père de Rabindranath est tombé par hasard sur une terre inhabitée avec de la terre rouge et des rizières lors d’une promenade en bateau et a pris la décision d’acheter le terrain. La vision de Rabindranath Tagore de créer une école sur le modèle du système de gurukul existant auparavant – un pensionnat où les élèves vivaient avec leur professeur/gourou – était la pierre angulaire de Visva-Bharati. Pour concrétiser cette vision, l'ashram créé par son père a été transformé en école en plein air. Lorsque Rabindranath Tagore a reçu le prix Nobel et a utilisé les fonds reçus, l'école a été agrandie et renommée Visva-Vidyalay en Visva-Bharati, ce qui signifie communion du monde avec l'Inde. Elle a été reconnue comme université centrale en 1951.

Shantiniketon was always a dream place for me. Shantiniketon is a name which takes me back to an era of famous cultural importance and heritage. We travelled from Sealdah station by train in an AC compartment and reached Bolpur station after 3 hours. Muzaffar hired a taxi and took us to the most significant places of Shatiniketon. Chatimtala, Visva Bharati University, Rabindra Bhaban, Rabidranath Tagores five houses, Museum, Amarkutir, Srijani Shilpagram, Sonajhuri forest and many other places were in our itinerary. Muzaffar was the perfect tour guide for my friends and I. He impressed us with his knowledge of Kolkatan culture and history. He was generous with his time too, offering to take photos for us, recommending nice places to eat and have coffee, and being flexible with our schedule. I would highly recommend Shantiniketon, with Muzaffar as the tour guide, to any travellers interested in exploring the Kolkata region.
