La rivière Hooghly au nord de Calcutta recèle une histoire captivante. À moins de quarante kilomètres, trois nations européennes construisirent des villes, des églises et des maisons de commerce sur les mêmes rives – les Français à Chandannagar, les Portugais à Bandel et les Danois à Serampore – rivalisant d’influence sur la province la plus riche de l’Empire moghol. Cette excursion privée d'une journée vous mène à travers les trois établissements. À Chandannagar, marchez dans le palais Dupleix, où les gouverneurs Français complotent la chute des Britanniques, et voyez Patalbari, le manoir qui accueillait Tagore. Le palais Dupleix est un excellent endroit pour commencer à se faire une idée de l'héritage français de Chandanpur. Aujourd'hui, le palais Dupleix est un musée et sont exposés des canons utilisés dans les guerres carnatiques, des objets et des meubles des gouverneurs généraux français et de nombreuses autres reliques.
Nous visitons un magnifique manoir en partie immergé dans la rivière Hooghly. Patal Bari signifie littéralement la maison souterraine. Deux caractéristiques frappantes de ce manoir sont les parasols et les sorties d'eau en bois magnifiquement sculptés. Au cours de ses belles années, des visiteurs importants de Chandan Nagar avaient l'habitude de visiter cette maison, Rabindranath Tagore, le poète national, et Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns.
Le Strand possède la meilleure collection de bâtiments coloniaux. Le point culminant du Stand est le Durgacharan Rakshit Ghat, un pavillon incroyablement beau orné de colonnes imposantes et de stucs saisissants construit en l'honneur de Durgacharan, récipiendaire de la Légion d'honneur de France. Construit dans les années 1920 en l'honneur de Durgacharan Rakshit. Le pavillon élégant se compose de colonnes élancées avec des œuvres décoratives en stuc composées d'une tête d'éléphant et d'un motif floral.
Il s'agit d'une église à deux étages avec des tours jumelles et une magnifique statue de Jésus. Construite en 1884, les points forts de cette église sont les magnifiques vitraux et les reliefs colorés de Jésus portant la croix sur les murs.
L'église a été construite en 1660 et est dédiée à Nostra Senhora di Rozario, populairement connue sous le nom de Notre-Dame du Rosaire. Les fleurs violettes parmi les pierres tombales d'époque ajoutent un aspect pittoresque à l'environnement. La statue la plus émouvante du complexe est celle de la Mère des Douleurs en marbre assise avec le corps de Jésus mort sur ses genoux. C'est un tireur de larmes
Le Rajbari est un grand manoir de la famille Goswami, la plus riche de l'histoire de Serampore. Ils furent invités par le roi de Gaur à s'installer au Bengale et à créer une entreprise à des conditions très avantageuses. Construit en 1820, ce manoir était autrefois la résidence la plus cossue du quartier.
Au 19ème siècle, Serampore était célèbre pour ses grandes institutions éducatives. William Carey a fondé le Serampore College, la première université du Bengale. Samachar Darpan, le premier journal bengali a été publié le 23 mai 1818 par une Baptist Mission Press située ici.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. My guide was excellent; friendly, knowledgeable and entertaining 😃. I thought I had a reasonable grasp of European history in India but I learnt a lot, without feeling I was on an education tour. All in all a fascinating and enjoyable day 👍
The slice of Europe was a revelation. We had a lovely time exploring the former colonial centres of Serampore, Bandel and Chandannagar. We saw amazing buildings and our guide helped us appreciate the legacy of French, Danish and Portuguese in Bengal. Ab outstanding experience.

I enjoyed the tour. If you are interested in the history of India and Bengal, you can really appreciate it. I was especially interested in "the Danish Tavern." It is also a good opportunity to visit places outside Kolkata and enjoy local food and sweets. The guide has extensive knowledge of Bengal's history and culture. The driver was excellent.
This is not a day trip for everyone. It is truly to the crumbling ruins of a forgotten colonial past. But if you’re the kind of person that nerds out on that stuff, this trip was awesome! Anirban was a great and knowledgeable host, eating lunch with him over his explanation of Bengali culture was a particular highlight. I was extremely glad I took the tour, 5/5 would recommend.

It’s amazing, but it’s for a very specific clientele. If you’re ready to nerd out on the European history of the Hooghly, this tour is absolutely for you. If not, hard pass, you’ll be bored out of you mind. Anirban is an excellent guide, and O really enjoyed his insight on Bengali culture over the included lunch, which was delicious and perfectly spicy.

The guide and driver were very nice and professional. However, there is hardly anything to see. The trip was boring and unexciting. The roads were dirty and congested with no real sight to see. However, that was no fault of the driver or the guide

The slice of Europe is a fascinating tour of colonial Bengal. Our guide Anirban was wonderful and helped us understand the impact of the various European powers on Bengal. There were fascinating monuments designed in European style and we also had a lovely local Bengali lunch. Highly recommened.
