Vous pouvez facilement passer une journée complète à explorer les merveilleux temples, grottes et sculptures rupestres de Kanchipuram et de Mamallapuram. La plupart ont été sculptées dans le rocher pendant le règne du VIIème siècle du roi des Pallava Narasimhavarman I, dont le surnom est Mamalla (Grand lutteur). Des guides officiels de Archaeological Survey of India peuvent être embauchés sur les sites.

Parmi les cinq temples Shiva de l'Inde du Sud associés aux cinq éléments, cette zone de 12 hectares est le sanctuaire de la terre. Vous entrez sous le gopuram sud, non peint, d'une hauteur de 59 m, dont les sculptures animées ont été ciselées en 1509 sous l'autorité de Vijayanagar. À l'intérieur, une salle à colonnes mène à gauche dans l'enceinte centrale, à laquelle Nandi fait face de droite. Le sanctuaire intérieur (réservé aux hindous) contient un lingam en terre et une chambre en miroir dont l’image centrale de Shiva se reflète dans une répétition sans fin.
Nous visiterons le magnifique temple de Kailasanathar depuis l’époque Pallava. Kanchipuram était la capitale du royaume médiéval de Pallavas dans le sud de l'Inde. Les Pallavas ont joué un rôle déterminant dans la transition de l'architecture taillée dans la roche aux temples en pierre. Nous apprécierons ces merveilles architecturales construites en 600 après JC.
Entassés ensemble à l'extrémité sud de Mamallapuram, les Cinq Rathas étaient, de manière surprenante, tous taillés dans de grandes roches. Chacun de ces beaux temples du 7ème siècle était dédié à un dieu hindou et porte maintenant le nom d'un ou plusieurs Pandavas, les cinq héros héros de l'épopée Mahabharata ou de leur épouse commune, Draupadi. Les rathas ont été cachés dans le sable jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient fouillés par les Britanniques il y a 200 ans. Ratha est un mot sanscrit appelé «char» et peut désigner la forme des temples ou leur fonction en tant que véhicules des dieux. On pense qu'ils ne servaient pas à l'origine de lieux de culte, mais de modèles architecturaux.
Nous visitons également la pénitence d’Arjuna, un relief bas de 100 pieds sur 45 pieds où un chef-d'œuvre entier de l’épopée du Mahabharata a été sculpté.
L’arrêt suivant est celui de Krishna’s Butterball, une vue curieuse d’un bloc de 5 mètres de diamètre en forme de boule qui est perché de façon précaire sur une pente et défie les lois de la gravité de Newton!
Semblable à un magnifique poing d'élégance taillée dans la roche qui surplombe la mer, entouré de jardins et de cours en ruines, le temple de la côte à deux tours symbolise les hauteurs de l'architecture pallava et les ambitions maritimes des rois pallava. Sa petite taille dissimule son excellente proportion et la qualité suprême des gravures, dont beaucoup sont maintenant érodées en ornements vaguement impressionnistes. Construit sous le règne de Narasimhavarman II au 8ème siècle, il s’agit du plus ancien temple en pierre indépendant du Tamil Nadu.

They were very resourceful and made the trip fun! I thought it would be good if I wanted to travel around with peace of mind, such as traveling alone for the first time for women in India. Maybe some buses if we can get away.
