One of the best days of our holiday. An early start from Te Anau was well worth it for to catch the first ferry and then take the coach overland to the terminal for the boat trip on the sound. There were hardly any other vessels around and the captain stopped the engines for a brief while to allow us to absorb the natural sounds of the sea and wildlife while marvelling at the glorious scenery. Dolphins with their young ones swam close by and we saw seals on the rocks out near the Tasman Sea. A couple of albatross followed the wake behind us for a while but not close enough to photograph.
Great day out a lot of travel to get there. We traveled from Te Anau by bus to the ferry then 1 1/4 hour bus to boat. 2 3/4 hours on boat then bus to ferry, then bus back. Exhausting. Great scenery & comentry.
The surroundings were beautiful and the cruise was smooth and well organised but the tour guides left out any mention of indigenous place names, stories or even the fact that this place was inhibited prior to colonisation. As a pakeha it would have felt respectful to at least mention this aspect once. This would also benefit overseas travellers and enhance their experience of our diverse and beautiful country.
It was a great experience, we had a beautiful day, use a product against sandflies. The only thing we didn't understand is that we went back with a much smaller boat, which was less comfertable. That was the only thing we didn't like. But nevertheless a beautiful experience. Greetings.
A big day out with endless beauty and wow at every turn. This tour showcased this majestic island and the history of it's discovery and inhabitance.
Super on time bus departure. There are snacks and coffee/drinks on board every boat so no need to really pack your own or pre order. Views are amazing. Bus driver was funny as hell! He could be a part time comedian. Educational and beautiful. Pray for rain!
Extremely well organised. Well worth the effort to discover this natural beauty. I’ve done Milford sound so thought I’d try doubtful. Way less busy !
This was beautiful but there were so many people that it was hard to enjoy. We did a small group tour of Milford and much preferred it over Doubtful Sound. We did see dolphins, kind of, because you’re fighting other people, we did see seals, kind of, because you’re fighting other people. We did get some nice landscape pictures, kind of, because there was other people vying for the same location and invading pictures. It was beautiful, we aren’t sorry we did it, but we preferred Milford small group with Fiordland Tours
Amazing scenery and you really felt you were in the wild. Great information provided both on board the buses and boat.
We really enjoyed our Doubtful Sound tour as each of the staff was very friendly and informative. Transportation seemed to be on time each step of the way and each of the bus and boat rides to Doubtful Sound seemed to be scenic and pleasurable. A cafe with coffee and pastries was available before boarding the boat on Lake Manipouri and the Doubtful Sound ship also had food and drinks for sale. Preordered lunch boxes were available for purchase but many packed their own lunch. The ships offer comfortable inside seating with plenty of standing room outside also. We had perfect weather. Doubtful Sound offers a less crowded and touristy experience than the typical Milford Sound trip. Highly recommend.
