Description

Amazing.

While there were many amazing experiences we had on our 2-week trip to Japan, this was easily the top experience in Kyoto. Selected the full Kaiseki meal option at time of booking. Our guide/translator was amazing, restaurant was beautiful, food was fantastic and the Geiko provided wonderful entertainment. No need for this review to be long.

Wonderful experience

We enjoyed a very memorable and amazing dining experience with our host, Ted, and Fuko-cho san. We were met in our hotel lobby by Ted who showed us various sites along our walk down Kiyamachidori to the Miyagawacho district. He was fantastic at explaining the different districts within Kyoto and about the geiko customs. We received a warm welcome by the host restaurant and enjoyed an exquisite dinner while talking with Ted and the geiko, Fuku-cho. Ted was great at translating the conversation and it was a very pleasant evening. We very much enjoyed the dance and games we played, especially since we are a family with two kids ages 8 and 11. It was engaging for the kids and they had a great time. We all learned so much. Ted was also so helpful in texting further recommendations for our stay in Kyoto and we so enjoyed his company and helpful information. Fuku-cho was a beautiful dancer and was very sweet, especially with our kids who were shy. It was a magical evening and we were so grateful to experience this during our time in Kyoto. Thank you Ted!

Spectacular Experience, well worth it!!!

From start to finish this experience was AMAZING! We opted for the private option in the tea house, a more intimate experience…we were not disappointed! The ambience and attentive nature of all staff members was great. Our guide and translator was knowledgeable, professional and personable. Providing a 5 star service with interesting insights into the Gion and surrounding Geiko district. Our Maiko and Geiko were warm and friendly and extremely attentive. Both demonstrated true talent when they preformed. They answered our questions and gave us a great picture of their lifestyle and journey to becoming Geiko and Maiko. The kaiseki meal was delicious…..Compliments to the chef! Overall, I would highly recommend this experience for anyone who wants a truly intimate and personal insight into the Geiko and Maiko traditions!

I highly recommend this...

I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Kyoto area; it was a truly unforgettable experience. Our guide was exceptionally informative, providing deep insights into the daily life and traditions of a Maiko. During our dinner, the guide walked us through the intricate details of the Maiko’s attire, explaining the significance of her specific dress and accessories. The dance was amazing. Gaining that level of context while sharing a meal made the evening feel both educational and incredibly special. It is a rare, look into a beautiful part of Japanese culture that I will always treasure.

Unfortunately, not worth it

The guide, Mia, was absolutely delightful: fun, knowledgeable, and with a true passion for the geisha (geiko) world. And the visit to the neighbourhood was interesting and informative. Unfortunately, the experience with the geiko itself was rather disappointing: she did little besides sitting there, answering very briefly to our questions, refill our glasses. No conversation, no initiative, no sign of the famous “art of entertaining” they should be so skilled at. The evening closed with a brief traditional dance and a game. All in all not worth the money.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughtful feedback. We are truly pleased to hear your kind words about Mia. She consistently strives to create a warm and engaging atmosphere for our guests, and we greatly appreciate your recognition of her passion and knowledge. At the same time, we are sincerely sorry that the ozashiki portion of the evening did not meet your expectations. In the world of geiko and maiko, personalities and styles of hospitality can vary. Some performers are naturally more reserved and soft-spoken, reflecting a traditional aesthetic of modesty and subtlety that has long been part of Kyoto’s culture. However, we fully understand that for guests traveling from abroad, especially for a premium private experience, there is often an expectation of a more visibly interactive and dynamic form of entertainment. Your feedback helps us reflect on how we can better bridge this cultural difference. While authenticity remains central to what we offer, it is also our responsibility as organizers and guides to help facilitate deeper engagement and ensure that guests feel genuinely entertained and included throughout the evening. Please know that we take your comments seriously. We will continue working closely with our partners to maintain both the integrity of this centuries-old tradition and the level of experience our guests rightfully expect. Thank you again for sharing your experience. We truly value your perspective. Kind regards,

Disappointing, Overpriced and Poorly Managed Geisha Experience

While our tour guide was knowledgeable and genuinely informative, the overall experience fell far short of expectations - especially given the price of over $2,700 for three people for a private teahouse experience. We experienced a significant delay waiting for the maiko and geisha to arrive. For an experience at this price point, we expected a seamless and highly professional operation. We were later told - with an apology - that they were unable to secure a maiko and had to “borrow” one from another house, which highlighted a lack of proper coordination. When the maiko finally arrived, she was extremely shy and difficult to hear, resulting in minimal interaction. The performance itself was brief and lackluster, lacking the polish and presence one would reasonably expect from a premium private experience. The dinner set was also underwhelming. The food was mediocre and noticeably inferior to meals we enjoyed at our ryokans during the trip. Adding to the disappointment, we contacted the company multiple times after the tour to share our concerns and request follow-up, and received no response at all. The complete lack of acknowledgment or customer service afterward was extremely frustrating. Overall, this experience was not worth the cost. At this price level, we expected exceptional execution, high-quality performances, and attentive customer care. Unfortunately, this experience was disorganized, underwhelming, and vastly overpriced. We would not recommend this experience at this price point.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your detailed feedback.
We truly appreciate your kind comments regarding our arrangement, and we are sincerely sorry that the overall experience did not meet your expectations - particularly given the premium nature of this private teahouse evening. First and foremost, we would like to address the delay you experienced. On the day of your dinner, the teahouse mistakenly believed that the booking was scheduled for a different date. We identified this through our final reconfirmation and took immediate action to correct the arrangement, however, it regrettably resulted in you having to wait. For an experience of this caliber, the evening should feel seamless from start to finish, and we offer our deepest apologies for the inconvenience and disappointment this caused. At the same time, we would like to provide important context regarding what this experience is designed to offer. The venue used for this dinner is an exceptionally private and traditional teahouse - one that is not generally accessible even to local residents without a proper introduction. Our ability to arrange an evening in such a setting is made possible only through trusted connections cultivated over decades and mutual respect within the community. The dinner itself is not a standard “tour” meal, but a carefully curated kaiseki course prepared by a highly regarded chef. Likewise, the entertainment is not a simplified tourist performance accompanied by recorded music. It is a genuine ozashiki experience, featuring live shamisen accompaniment by a geiko and dance by a maiko - an authentic cultural performance that is fundamentally different from mass-market offerings. Regarding your impression of the maiko, we fully understand that her quiet demeanor may have felt less interactive than you had hoped. However, it may be helpful to share a cultural perspective: in Kyoto tradition, a “maiko” is an apprentice geiko - still in training and at the beginning of her professional journey. Her grace, modesty, and youthful refinement are not shortcomings, but part of what defines the maiko’s unique presence. We recognize, however, that this cultural nuance may not have been communicated with enough clarity, and we take responsibility for improving how we prepare our international guests to fully appreciate the meaning behind what they are experiencing. We are also very concerned to hear that you contacted us after the tour and did not receive a response. This is not the standard of care we strive to deliver, and we sincerely apologize. We are currently reviewing our internal communication and follow-up procedures to ensure that every guest message is properly acknowledged and handled promptly. While we respect your perspective, we must also state with confidence that the experience we provide is authentic, highly exclusive, and thoughtfully arranged at the highest level available within this cultural context. At the same time, we take your feedback seriously, and we will use it to further strengthen both operational coordination and the way we communicate Kyoto’s cultural expectations and subtleties to our guests. Thank you again for sharing your experience. We remain fully committed to the highest standards of discretion, authenticity, and hospitality. Kind regards,

Great Authentic Experience

Great to have dinner and chat with Maiko San, see her elegant performance and guide was excellent. We started with a walk around the Geisha district, arriving at the tea house venue. A traditional room where the team served up traditional food and saki. We had a good chat with Maiko San and then she performed a beautiful dance to traditional music. Then party games which she excelled at. A great evening with a truly authentic experience.

If you have any doubt, just do it, this is so worth it, I don’t even have words to describe it. Definitely the highlight of our trip, and I wish I could repeat it many times.

Lovely experience

After a warm welcome we had al walk trough Gion explaining the cultural background. Our guide Miyah was the best. She made it fun even for the teenagers present in our family. No question was to much. After a visit to the tea house. Warm welcome as a family and Miyah for perfect translation.
