Booked on Wednesday June 17, 2026. Whale watching was to be the highlight of our vacation on Vancouver Island. I was sadly disappointed that we booked the 4 hour trip out of Cowichan Bay. Of that 4 hour trip, 1.5 hours of it was a boat ride to the actual location of where the whales were, which only provided us approximately 30 to 45 mins watching the whales, followed by another 1.5 hour boat ride back to the start location. We travelled so fast we were not able to see any other wild life, but a seal bobbing in the water as we zoomed by. What I learned was to ensure that one books with a company that has the closest sightings so that you may spend MOST of your time watching and seeing the whales, than travel time.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that the travel time impacted your experience. Whale watching is a wildlife experience, and the location of the animals can change dramatically from day to day. Whales can travel well over 100 km within a 24-hour period, meaning no responsible whale watching company can guarantee that whales will always be close to the departure location. On some days, we have whales in the harbour as our boats are departing, while on other days we may need to travel over an hour to locate them. Our tours are advertised as 3.5–4 hours to allow time for travel, wildlife viewing, and exploration of the Salish Sea. Our captains work hard to locate wildlife while also ensuring we follow responsible whale watching practices and do not track or disturb the animals. We hope you can appreciate the effort your captain made to provide your group with a whale encounter and the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Salish Sea. While every tour is different, we are grateful to share these incredible waters with our guests.
We had a wonderful whale watching experience with Taz as our captain. She is very knowledgeable and approachable. We loved how it was a small group tour where everyone was able to enjoy the sights. I also want to give a shout out to the super kind clerk at the meeting point. She just radiates goodness.
Thank you for the wonderful review! We’re so happy to hear you had such a memorable whale watching experience with Taz. Our small-group tours allow guests to enjoy a more personal experience, and we’re glad you appreciated the opportunity to take in the sights while learning from such a knowledgeable and passionate captain. We’ll also be sure to share your kind words with our office staff at the meeting point; EJ will be thrilled to hear your thoughtful compliment. Thank you for joining us, and we hope to welcome you back aboard Ocean EcoVentures again soon!
Our captain and tour guide was so knowledgeable and friendly and made the trip so much more interesting with all her facts. She really made sure we got to see everything and got our money's worth!
Thank you for the wonderful review! We're so glad to hear that your captain and guide helped make your experience memorable. Our team is passionate about sharing the wonders of the Salish Sea, and we’re thrilled that her knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedication helped you get the most out of your adventure. We’ll be sure to share your kind words with her!
We booked a half day trip from Parksville (French Creek). A few brief sightings of Whales - very good. Main issue was we only stopped briefly 3 times in the 4 hour tour. Rest of the time we were travelling at high speed and the ride was extremely bumpy. Literally like smacking down on concrete. Guide and organisation was very good.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed the whale sightings and appreciated our guide and organization. The Salish Sea is a dynamic environment, and conditions on the water can change quickly. Safety is always our number one priority, which is why we provide flotation suits, operate purpose-built Zodiac vessels, and thoroughly review the risks of changing sea conditions in our liability waiver that our guests read and sign before every tour. Traveling is also an essential part of responsible whale watching, as we don't track the whales and often cover a large area in search of wildlife. We appreciate your feedback and hope the wildlife you encountered made for a memorable experience.
Great to experience with our lovely captains, Jane and Kate on board Prowler. The ride was comfortable and safe. The wildlife and scenery were awe inspiring and the guides were very knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re so happy to hear you enjoyed your time on Prowler with Captains Jane and Kate. It’s wonderful to know you felt comfortable and safe, and that the wildlife and scenery made such an impression. We really appreciate the recommendation and hope to see you on board again soon!
Tour left at 12:00PM on Father's Day and ended at 4:30PM. Weather was perfect, whales appeared in large numbers, neither of which the company could control. Their narrative was informative and friendly. Canadian regulations require you wear a bulky survival suit. Our hosts did a good job of getting us into these contraptions. No need to bring extra clothes. They are bulky and can be hot but you can take off the upper part to be more comfortable. Perhaps the best whale watch I have experienced in my 82 years of life. We had lots of excellent cooperation from nature and the weather.
Thank you so much for this wonderful review! We’re truly honoured to hear this may have been the best whale watching experience of your 82 years. We’re glad you enjoyed the day, the whales, and the care our team took in getting everyone suited up comfortably. We really appreciate you joining us and sharing your experience—hope to see you again!
This was my second time with ocean ecoventures. The first time captain Lance kept us with a pod of orcas within the bay and I was able to capture some amazing images of tail slaps and a breach. This time Captain Jane took us on a long tour out among the islands where we witnessed another pod of orcas, many beautiful scenes and some additional wildlife, which was great. The topper was coming to the place where a couple humpback whales were cruising…just in time to capture one of them breaching three times!! That moment was one I, as a photographer, have been seeking during my last three tours. I can’t express how grateful I am to captain Jane and ocean ecoventures for making this possible. Great people. Terrific service and a fast, comfortable boat from which to enjoy the trip of a lifetime! Thank you thank you thank you!! I’ll be back!
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review We’re thrilled to hear you had such an incredible experience with both Captain Lance and Captain Jane. That humpback breach is something special, especially after you’d been hoping for a moment like that. We really appreciate you choosing Ocean EcoVentures again, and we hope to see you back out on the water for trip number three soon!
We had a wonderful time on our whale watch tour. Taz, our boat captain, was great…so informative. We saw two different pods of Biggs Killer whales AND a humpback whale. We also saw Bald Eagles and harbor seals.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review! We’re thrilled to hear you had such an incredible time with Captain Taz and that her knowledge helped bring the experience to life. Seeing two pods of Bigg’s killer whales along with a humpback is truly a special day out on the water, and we’re so glad you also got to spot bald eagles and harbour seals along the way. We really appreciate you joining us and hope to welcome you back for another adventure on the Salish Sea soon!
Had an amazing time. Captain was very knowledgeable, friendly and took us right to the whales and other wildlife. Experience of a lifetime. Thank you!
We’re so glad you had such an amazing time out on the water and got to meet the locals (the whale kind 😉). Huge shoutout to the captain for delivering an “experience of a lifetime” moment! Hope to see you back again soon for round two of the adventure!
Wonderful experience, Greg is an awesome guide, experienced, personable and passionate about marine creatures. We observed 3 different groups of orcas during our excursion and I got to check off other bucket list wish. Thanks!
