Plenty of steps to climb; many doors to step over to get through. They do have elevators. The size of this ship is massive! The docents (some have flown and lived aboard aircraft carriers) were the best part. They answered questions and brought experiences to light.
Plan for at least three hours, and that would be a short visit of wonderful history. Watch the short film first, then head up for the bridge tour. Lines can get long fast. We went on the 4th of July, got inside around 10am. We kind of beat the crowd, no real long waits, about 20min for the short film and we got to choose our seats because we waited in line. Go right up front if you can. This tour was worth every penny, I would go again on a day that might be a little less crowded.
Located in a beautiful spot right in the San Diego Harbor, the USS Midway is easily one of the most iconic and unique carrier museums on the West Coast. It is a definitive must-visit for any aviation or military enthusiast, especially those with a deep appreciation for historic naval aircraft. The sheer scale of the ship is massive. There are countless well-curated exhibits spread across both the indoor lower decks and the spectacular outdoor main flight deck. We absolutely love exploring this ship; in fact, we’ve been here many times and always seem to discover something brand new with each visit. Our personal favorite areas to explore are the captain's quarters, the officers' cabins, and of course, standing out on the bustling main flight deck. As a bonus you can get a panoramic view of San Diego Harbor while in there sometime when you are lucky you can get a glimpse of current active aircraft carrier docking across the harbor. The museum is also highly convenient, featuring a massive souvenir shop and a great cafe inside to refuel. Overall, it is highly recommended for anyone visiting the San Diego Harbor area. Navigating through this floating city is an unforgettable experience!
It is a must while in San Diego to visit the USS Midway. My wife and I have never been on a aircraft carrier and were blown away by the size of this massive ship. We also greatly enjoyed walking through and seeing all the aspects that sailors experience while at sea. We also enjoyed all the aircraft which were on display.
The USS Midway was a great experience & highly recommend but ruined by the fact that you charged me twice for the tickets & when I reached out you told me one set of tickets was issued when there were 2 payments for the tickets -sort out your flawed website & accounting system & refund my extra charges
This was a great museum! Lots of interactive exhibits and the ability to learn so much about the history and life on the ship!
Great museum. Plan to spend at least half a day. My 11 year old Grandson said it was his favorite museum. The talks by the veterans were really up.
The narrow and steep stairs could provide some mobility issues in certain areas. But we loved the history and learning about the ship and its history.
A must in San Diego for all interested in the US Midway I really enjoyed it Everything was perfect A must in San Diego
The USS Midway is worth the money and time to check out this piece of history! We booked our tickets online the day before because it was a couple dollars cheaper than at the door. We picked up the self-guided audio tour gear and set off. They say give yourself 3-5 hours, with my husband being a WWII enthusiast (and myself a bit by proxy) we spent just a little over 6 hours taking a look at everything! The audio tour was very informative, and each Docent we ran into was kind and very knowledgeable about the history of the ship and the aircraft. Be prepared to walk and climb! Some of the stairs leading to the upper levels/bridge area are very steep, but so worth the climb for the views and history from the Docents. We went on a Monday and it was busy but not crowded, but we never felt rushed or crowded. We at lunch at Café 41 there and it was delicious and a nice break in the shade while looking out over San Diego. Don't forget to stop at the gift shop to get yourself a reminder of your visit. This is a must do for your visit to San Diego!
