Instálate y observa cómo la ciudad se desvanece en las llanuras de Canterbury, antes de que los valles de los ríos se estrechen y los Alpes del Sur se acerquen a tu alrededor. ¡Hay un vagón de observación al aire libre que debes revisar!
Entra en el Parque Nacional Arthur's Pass y cambia el tren por algo más personal. Su guía Cheeky Kiwi le encuentra aquí con un Mercedes Sprinter moderno y los conocimientos locales a juego.
También conocido como Deaths Corner y una mirada explica por qué. El viaducto de Otira se extiende 440 metros a través de un espectacular desfiladero alpino, y sin él, cruzar Arthur's Pass por carretera simplemente no existiría. Es una hazaña de ingeniería ambientada dentro de un parque nacional, y las vistas en todas direcciones son alucinantes. Mantén los ojos bien abiertos, el Kea, el famoso loro alpino de Nueva Zelanda, gusta de la audiencia.
Vuelve al pueblo para tu hora libre. Si tienes las piernas para ello, la caminata hasta la cascada Devils Punchbowl es la elección, un sendero de bajo a moderado a través de un arbusto nativo que termina en una cascada de 131 metros que se estrella en el fondo del valle. ¿Prefieres calmarte? La cafetería del pueblo hace un café decente y las tiendas locales valen la pena un paseo.
Dispersas por una ladera abierta sobre la carretera estatal 73, las rocas calizas de Castle Hill son uno de los lugares más tranquilos y espectaculares de Nueva Zelanda. Geológicamente antigua, cinematográficamente famosa, esta locación se duplicó como Narnia en El León, La Bruja y El Armario y apareció en El Señor de los Anillos. Camina entre las formaciones, observa a los escaladores y rocas haciendo lo suyo, y toma las fotos que no sabías que necesitabas. Autoguiado y totalmente a su propio ritmo.

Amazing views on Tranzalpine leading up to Arthur's Pass. Tour guide took us to multiple points of interest and was full of knowledge. We did the tour with our son who is severely autistic and he fully enjoyed the entire experience. We recommend doing the one that includes lunch, just makes the day easier.
This tour was quintessentially New Zealand to me. Lovely day, beautiful scenery, collegial travel companions, and a flexible tour guide with a lyrical, knowledgeable commentary on the area. And the Castle Hill rocks - just outstanding! A wonderful adventure.

We were collected from our hotel easily and on time. Our group size was 8 - perfect. The train experience was excellent, with the plenty of room on the viewing platforms for taking photos. It was a miserable day, with it being cold and wet at Arthurs Pass but the group remained flexible with the itinerary and many laughs were had. Lunch was plentiful - one did not go hungry. Paul, our driver was brilliant with providing information along our tour and finishing the day with donuts in Springfield. We are thinking of doing this tour again on our next visit and hope for some snow on the mountain tops = makes for great photography.

This was one of the highlights of our trip. The TranzAlpine train journey was stunning from start to finish, and the small group return tour made the whole day very relaxed and enjoyable. Arthur’s Pass was beautiful, with enough time to walk around, take photos and enjoy the village. Castle Hill was also a special stop and definitely worth seeing. Well organised, comfortable and highly recommended.

We boarded the train in Christchurch and headed off to Arthur's Pass. Unfortunately, due to the train breaking down we didn't get to our intended destination. We rejoined our tour at Springfield and traveled to Castle Hill. The walk at Castle Hill was great with fabulous views. We then traveled back to Christchurch. Will definitely book the tour again on our next trip to Christchurch.
