I booked Rabbie’s Alnwick Castle tour expecting a well curated day focused on interesting destinations and local history. Unfortunately, aside from Alnwick Castle itself, the itinerary felt padded with unnecessary and underwhelming stops that appeared designed simply to fill time rather than provide a meaningful experience. The additional stops offered little value. We spent time at a random stream, stopped to walk across a bridge marking the Scotland and England border, and visited a beach with no clear purpose or notable attraction. These locations lacked context, significance, or any compelling reason to be included on a premium day tour. Instead of enhancing the experience, they made the day feel drawn out and unfocused. The guide, Ally, was another major disappointment. He talked almost continuously throughout the trip yet provided very little insightful or engaging information. Much of the commentary felt rambling and repetitive rather than educational. He also played random music that seemed disconnected from the tour and detracted from the overall experience. Most concerning was the guide’s language. On at least two occasions he used profanity, including the term “pussies,” despite the fact that there were children in the van. This was highly inappropriate and unprofessional. Families should be able to expect a respectful environment on a guided tour, and this standard was not met. Alnwick Castle was excellent and ultimately the only highlight of the day. Unfortunately, the quality of the castle visit was overshadowed by a weak itinerary and a guide whose conduct and presentation did not meet reasonable expectations. I cannot recommend this tour and would encourage Rabbie’s to review both the structure of the itinerary and the professionalism expected from its guides.
Hello Steven, Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I believe we have already spoken to you via email. I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed visiting Alnwick Castle. I visited it myself a few years ago and really enjoyed it, it really feels like stepping into past history. However, I understand that this was the only highlight of your tour and that you were disappointed in both the itinerary and your driver-guide. I'm really sorry to hear that the level of service that our guide offered didn't meet your expectations. Our teams are trained to balance insightful storytelling with appropriate music and quiet time, so the experience works well for everyone, but I regret that we didn’t get that quite right for you on this occasion. I'm also concerned about the vocabulary used by the guide, and I agree with you that this is not appropriate whether there are kids or not on the bus. I'll be passing your comments along to our operations team, and I’m confident appropriate action will take place to ensure our standards are upheld. As for the itinerary, I'm sorry that some of the stops were of no interest to you and that not enough commentary on them was given to give you insights as to why they were in our planned itinerary. Your feedback helps us understand what different travellers are looking for, so thank you for sharing it. If you’d like help choosing a tour that’s more closely aligned with your interests next time, we’d be very happy to assist. As explained in our response to your email, we were happy to offer a compensation for the disappointment and the refund has already been done. You might even have received it already. We genuinely appreciate you choosing us for your trip, and your feedback will help us improve. Hopefully, we'll have the chance to welcome you back on tour and offer you an experience that meets our usual high standards. All the best, Camille
This castle is within easy walking distance from Alnwick town centre. Impressive castle and a lot of history , the guides in all parts of the castle were very knowledgeable and pleasant to talk to. We took one of the free tours on offer to visit the locations of the long list of films and tv series that have been filmed there, including Harry Potter, Blackadder and Downton Abbey. We spent about 5 hours there including a light lunch and watching the visitors of all ages learning how to fly on Harry Potter broomsticks!
The Castle is impressive and worth the distance to get there. Our guide was super nice and gave us plenty os information about the sites we visited and the history os Scotland. We definitely recommend if you are a Harry Potter fan.
Billy N was a great guide and driver with interesting stories as well as great information about the places we visited.
Our guide Rich made the trip so great, he talked to us about history and fun facts, he drove so carefully and made sure we were safe on the road, and he played some wonderful music! We drove along the coast and the view was amazing!
We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip with Kevin and Duncan. They were both hilarious, telling tales and history with flair. It's a long day and we didn't even notice we were having so much fun listening to Kevin tell stories of the many battles, what each location is known for, etc. He played Scottish music representative of each spot, and was excellent at ensuring we were all having a great day. There was ample time at each stop, and even when returning, Kevin provided suggestions for how to spend your evening in the city. Highly recommend!
This is a phenomenal tour. I had a wonderful tour guide for the day whose name I can’t remember so sorry he was really great. Everything from the castle to the ruins to the drive-through Northumberland all of it. This is just a wonderful tour.
Driver was great and the group size was perfect. Our driver was very knowledgeable and helped ensure we got tickets to the broom flying lessons which was the main reason we booked. I would suggest removing the first stop from the itinerary.
Al was a fantastic tour guide! Extremely knowledgeable on history and the Alnwick castle and region history. The weather could not have been better. We had just the right amount of time at the castle and all the appropriate stops. It did not feel rushed and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would recommend a Rabbie's tour with Al to everyone!
If your main goal is to visit Alnwick castle, just do that separately not through the tour. You waste so much time on a bus stopping at random spots for no real reason. You can save sooo much money taking the train there and buy a ticket separately. Plus, you can have more time. They said three hours would be plenty of time there and it wasn’t even close. You could easily spend 5-6 hours there minimum to get to see everything. Very disappointed we didn’t just do that. Waste of time and money if your goal is to visit the castle. This is not to say our tour guide wasn’t great. He definitely made the ride more enjoyable with the stories. But it doesn’t justify the cost even by half.
