El sitio arqueológico de Joya de Cerén es el único patrimonio mundial en El Salvador, que lo hace único en Mesoamérica. Joya de Cerén fue una de las aldeas mayas que se ubicaron en el valle de Zapotitán cuando en el siglo VII dC. El volcán Loma Caldera entró en erupción y el lugar se cubrió con ceniza volcánica del evento eruptivo, preservando así las construcciones de la tierra y los artefactos del lugar, aquí se puede ver la vida cotidiana de los mayas.
Chalchuapa fue un lugar donde llegó la influencia de Copán, así como la influencia teotihuacana y tolteca. Comprende una serie de estructuras que fueron el escenario de un importante y sofisticado asentamiento maya que existió alrededor del 100 y 1200 DC. Después de una larga ocupación, cuyo mayor desarrollo corresponde al horizonte Clásico (250 a 900 d.C.), Tazumal fue definitivamente abandonado alrededor de 1200 AD.

Really a great tour of Joya de Ceren, Tazumal, and a nice lunch stop at Coatepeque! Josue was really knowledgeable throughout the tour, and shared a lot of historical information about the Mayan culture, history, and lifestyle. I also enjoyed hearing learning about the history of and life in modern El Salvador. Highly recommend!
