El Museo del Templo Mayor abrió sus puertas el 12 de octubre de 1987. Su creación fue resultado de las excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas por el Proyecto Templo Mayor en su primera temporada, entre 1978 y 1982, las cuales se hicieron bajo la dirección de Eduardo Matos Moctezuma y permitieron recuperar una colección de más de 7 mil objetos, así como los vestigios del Templo Mayor de Tenochtitlan y de algunos edificios aledaños. Todo ello dio origen a la iniciativa de edificar un museo de sitio para exhibir dicha colección y, al mismo tiempo, complementar la visita de la zona arqueológica.

Templo Mayor was our top four museums. Fortunately we arrived at the right time and were grateful to have purchased the line skip. Staff is very attentive and process was easy. Simple bag search and a pass of metal detector.
The way Templo Mayor works is that you stand in line and buy tickets, then you go in. When you book this service, basically you are paying someone to stand in line and buy the tickets for you. The tickets are about 6 dollars. So this premium of $30 is for the person’s work. We did not get tickets in person, we got two online QR code tickets. At first I thought, “wow, they have advanced booking now for foreigners, cool!” However, when we got to Templo Mayor, we found out that the museum had been closed all week due to safety reasons. Most museums were closed due to a teacher protest and camp out In México’s Historical District. We were never notified by the tour guide this was happening, we were never offered a reimbursement or to reschedule the date. This vendor seems scammy… I am requesting a refund from Viator and strongly suggest this vendor is flagged by the company as a potential fraudster.
Make sure you take note of the meet up details the one time they’re provided cuz you won’t get them again
I bought this ticket on Viator and the museum would not let me in. I tried to show them the confirmation booking reference etc and after 30 minutes of trying I still did not get into the museum
This is an amazing place! The ruins are fascinating but the museum is also brilliant. Be aware that there is loads to see so allow at least 2 or 3 hours.
Fascinating history not to be missed. The uncovering of years of construction and destruction continues to this day as archeologists can be viewed meticulously seeking to uncover more of this buried city
