En los años 70 del siglo XX, los arquitectos querían crear áreas residenciales hospitalarias con la participación de los residentes y otros usuarios en respuesta al modernismo a gran escala y gris de la arquitectura de la reconstrucción después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
En 2011, el municipio de Rotterdam organizó la primera iniciativa de la ciudad, un instrumento administrativo para estimular la innovación administrativa y la participación ciudadana. Se pidió a los habitantes de Róterdam que presentaran proyectos que dinamizaran la ciudad y mejoraran la calidad de vida de la ciudad. antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial no había Estación Central, pero había cuatro estaciones alrededor del centro. En 1957 se inauguró la estación central en su ubicación actual. En 2004 se inició una renovación total de la estación central, en 2014 se entregó el resultado final actual. La antigua estación ya no podía hacer frente a la afluencia de pasajeros.
La laurenskerk es el único vestigio del centro medieval de Róterdam. La laurenskerk es un cruce entre una iglesia de salón (todos los edificios tienen la misma altura) y una basílica cruciforme (aquí las torres laterales son más bajas que la torre principal). La iglesia fue construida entre 1449 y 1525.
La fachada interior del Markthal está cubierta con una obra de arte de 11.000 m² (dos campos de fútbol) de Arno Coenen e Iris Roskam, titulada Hoorn des Overvloeds. Este título hace referencia a la Cornucopia, un cuerno de la mitología griega que simboliza la abundancia y la saturación. La obra de arte muestra frutas, verduras, granos, peces, flores e insectos muy ampliados. Al fondo también se puede ver el Laurenskerk con torre.
En la Edad Media, una de las 10 puertas de la ciudad que tenía aquí Róterdam. En los años 30, la ciudad de Róterdam creció rápidamente y la puerta se interpuso en el camino, ya que querían un mejor flujo para el creciente tráfico. Se decidió mover la puerta unos 100 metros (la demolición de la puerta encontró mucha resistencia). Durante el bombardeo en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la puerta sufrió graves daños, un año después del bombardeo la puerta fue demolida, porque ya no se podía terminar. Algunas obras ornamentales de la antigua puerta se salvaron y se incorporaron a los muros de los edificios de la esquina de la plaza del ayuntamiento.
No mucho del centro histórico ha permanecido intacto durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pero el Oude Haven es afortunadamente uno de esos lugares históricos que se han conservado. La casa blanca fue construida en 1889 y con una altura de 43 metros el primer rascacielos en Bélgica, Holanda y Luxemburgo.

We were able to set the start time for our tour & when we met Jess, she was able to customise what we wanted to see & do. Jess contacted us the night before to confirm our tour/time/meeting point & that morning, she gave us more specifics & was on time. Jess’ English was impeccable! She had so much knowledge & was able to give us a personal touch. What was included was just enough to get a Dutch experience including riding the metro & trams, sampling Dutch fries, going through the cube apts, walking through the old port, seeing various architectures building etc. We couldn’t have asked for more. What a treat it was!

We enjoyed this walking tour with Jess as she gave us a good amount of Rotterdam history. She met us at the port and also brought us back with a few train rides and a good deal of walking along the way. We made a stop for coffee/latte, however there was no lunch or street food as advertised when we booked. The tour took about 4 hours.

the tour guide arrived over 15 min late and told us he lost his bag on the subway with his wallet, keys, and tickets. He could not take us on the tour. He left and came back 1/2 hr later saying that he accepted his fate and could start the tour but would extend 1 hr later than planned. We were very disappointed and did not get the tour. we called viator to ask for our money back. the local tour company did not answer their phone- we had hoped that they could send a replacement .

This was an extremely rare and unforeseen situation. Our guide unfortunately lost his bag on the metro while traveling to the meeting point. Despite the stress of losing his wallet, keys, and personal belongings, he came to meet your group, explained the situation transparently, and asked whether a short delay would be acceptable while he contacted the public transport company's Lost & Found service. After returning within the agreed timeframe, he was fully prepared to conduct your private tour and even offered to extend it by an additional hour so you would still receive the complete experience. Unfortunately, by then your group had decided not to continue. We also apologize that you were unable to reach us by phone. We missed Viator's call and immediately tried calling back, but were unable to get through the automated phone system. Jamal was worth a 5 star review for personality & knowledge. Really a great guide. Only reason for 4 star was that the tour was to include a street food lunch which we didn't get. There ended up being 8 of our friends that joined our group.

Mo was our guide and he was incredible. We knew very little about the city and learned so much. The tour was perfect for us. We had an infant with us and the timing and Mo, our guide, was a perfect fit. The tour size gave us time and attention to ask questions and not feel rushed. Jamaal was an excellent guide on this three + hour walking tour of Rotterdam. He was very knowledgeable, courteous, and prompt. We learned a great deal about the city, its history, people and culture. Two highlights that we especially enjoyed were the Cube houses and the Market Hall. I would highly recommend this trip, as well as Jamaal, if you would like to spend a few hours learning all about this historic and beautiful city!
