Durante esta excursión de un día, un conductor privado en un automóvil sedán lo llevará a través de las fortalezas más interesantes de la antigua Khorezm: Dumon Kala - Guldursun Kala - Angka Kala - Janbas Kala - Ayaz Kala - Lago Akchakul - Toprak Kala - Fortalezas de Kizil Kala. Toprak Kala data del período Kushan, alrededor de los siglos II y III d.C. y fue la residencia real de los reyes de Khorezm. El lugar, que primero sirvió como santuario real, fue abandonado brevemente a principios del siglo IV y luego, después de algunas restauraciones, se utilizó como ciudadela administrativa de la ciudad.
Guldursun Kala es una ciudad fortificada. Los muros exteriores y las torres datan del siglo XII d.C. Durante las excavaciones arqueológicas se encontraron en el sitio mucha cerámica antigua y medieval y muchos artículos y monedas de bronce. Las monedas indican que el último período de ocupación está relacionado con el año 1220, durante el gobierno de Muhammad Khorezmshah y la época de la invasión mongola de Khorezm.
Janbas Kala tiene uno de los sistemas de fortificación más arcaicos que data de ese período de la Antigüedad temprana. Janbas Kala se diferencia de la mayoría de las otras fortalezas por no tener torres en sus muros exteriores. Ayaz Kala es una de las fortalezas más espectaculares de la zona. De hecho, hay no una, sino tres fortalezas agrupadas sobre y alrededor de una colina prominente en el extremo oriental de la cordillera Sultan-Uiz-dahg. La fortaleza sirvió de defensa contra las incursiones nómadas. Un camino de grava conduce a un pequeño grupo de yurtas, un centro de descanso turístico con vista a un lago poco profundo pero pintoresco. Probablemente fue fundado en el período afrígido, en algún momento entre los siglos VII y VIII d.C.... Hay un lago, el lago Akchakul, entre Toprak y Ayaz Kala. En BC, el Amudarya (Buey) fluía en dos direcciones, la primera era el río Akcha y la segunda el río Suvyorgan. La razón por la que esta parte del río se llama Akcha fue la Fortaleza Akchakhan en la margen izquierda del actual Akchakol, y todavía existe hoy. El nombre del castillo lleva el nombre de la antigua reina de Khorezmshahs Akchahon. Después de que el río cambió su curso, se formó el actual lago Akchakul, que conservó su nombre. El lago tiene un hermoso paisaje alrededor junto con una casa de pesca y un restaurante.

A driver came to pick me up at my hotel in Khiva at 9 a.m. I was alone during the whole day of the tour His name is Sarvar and he was very kind, very smiling, and always in a good mood It was a real pleasure The car was comfortable with air conditioning The landscapes were interesting, we passed through cities, villages, fields, and large arid expanses He dropped me off at 7 fortresses Some more damaged and dilapidated than others Sometimes parts of the surrounding walls were rebuilt so that one could really get a sense of them. 2 required payment (20,000 sums = €1.40). The day before, the manager sent me the audio explanations for each of the fortresses in French. I was able to listen to them quietly to fully understand. Then around 4:30 p.m., we arrived at the yurt camp. I was assigned one with 3 beds, but I was alone inside. The yurts are very comfortable with electricity and even air conditioning. The experience of sleeping inside was super magical and comfortable. The evening meal was very good; we ate outside all together, but there is a dining room if it is cold. Breakfast was also very good. We then left the next day for Khiva around 9:15 a.m. I recommend it It was very good.

I had a great day with Olimjon, exploring 7 ancient fortresses in karakalpakstan. Olimjon was very helpful at answering our questions and providing context to the ruins. I also appreciated that he gave us some self exploring time so we could take our time appreciating the areas. I recommend this tour as a lovely excursion out of Khiva ancient city.

This was a wonder day. Our guide was incredible. He had so much knowledge of Uzbek history and of the fortresses. He was also a very safe driver. He took us to a local restaurant for lunch which was fantastic. The fortresses themselves were incredible to see and we were provided audio which gave us the history of the fortresses. Exciting time to visit fortresses together with family despite cold temperature outside. Camel riding is another fun time.
We booked a private tour to see all of the Kalas. The tour was good. We ended up with another group travelling in a separate car but with the same guide. This wasn't really what we booked and meant we didnt have the amount of time we wanted at each site. We booked a private tour for a reason as we like to have time at each site and be able to decide where we stay longer or shorter times. The car was a standard saloon car with AC that didnt quite work. It also meant that at the final kala we couldn't drive up to the site and walking path. We did the last Kala on our own, the guide stayed at the camp site. It would have been good to have more indepth historical information about the sites spanning the different periods of history. If you drive this could be an easy self drive day trip.

Khiva Fortress is fabulous, containing much to see and be in awe of! Beautiful monuments, informative museums, history everywhere! The fortress is well kept, clean and tidy. Worth a visit!

As a solo female traveler I felt completely safe with Sarvar. I was sent some audio files about the forts before going, but Sarvar is still learning English so the conversation was limited and he didn't know a great deal about the sites we visited, but he was easy to be with. You do have to walk alone to the sites and the last one is a bit of a trek. Lunch was a pleasant enough roadside restaurant but I was a bit sad there was no fried fish by a lake like other reviews have mentioned. I'm glad I went and it waa really nice to get away from the city, but if you're by yourself it's a very long day and I think a half day tour might be more enjoyable.
The owner, Olimjon, was really courteous and helpful. Not only did he personally accompany us to see the fortresses, but he also bought us train tickets, which in Uzbekistan are not easy to buy. Very competent, speaks excellent English, precise and punctual. Highly recommended
