El Gran Monasterio de Meteorón es el más grande y antiguo de todos. Fue llamado el monasterio que fue "suspendido en el aire" (meteoro), debido a la formación de la roca gigantesca sobre la cual se construyó. El gran monasterio de Meteoro fue fundado por San Atanasio, el meteorito, que fue el primer fundador del monasterio y organizador de la sistemática koenovion. Por este motivo, la fundación de este monasterio se considera un punto de inflexión, o incluso mejor, el comienzo del monastismo organizado en la Santa Meteora. Hosios Athanasios nació alrededor de 1302 en la ciudad medieval de New Patras, hoy Hypati y su nombre de laico era Andronikos.
Totalmente construido dentro de una gran cavidad de una roca, este monasterio es muy indicativo de su tipo, en comparación con los que se ven generalmente en las cimas de las rocas. Un monje con el nombre de Nilos, en el año 1367 dC, junto con otro monje llamado Cyprianus se convirtieron en los fundadores y dueños del monasterio. Fue destruido en 1809, cuando el rebelde y héroe local Papathymios Vlahavas fue arrestado aquí por el ejército turco de Ali Pasha. El camino a este monasterio es muy sencillo y agradable.
El Monasterio Santo de Varlaam es el segundo monasterio más grande. Está ubicado frente al Gran Monasterio de Meteoro y fue fundado a mediados del siglo XIV por el ejercitante Hosios Varlaam. El elegante monasterio Catholicon fue construido en honor de Agioi Pantes en 1541-42, por dos hermanos de Ioannina, los monjes sacerdotes Hosioi Theophanes y Nectarios the Apsarades. La iglesia principal fue decorada en 1548. Basada en criterios estilísticos, esta magnífica pintura mural se atribuye al famoso hagiógrafo de Tebas, Frago Catelano.
El Santo Monasterio de San Nicolás de Anapafsas es el primer Monasterio que encontramos en nuestro camino hacia la Santa Meteora y se fundó a fines del siglo XIV. Para el nombre de Anapafsas hay numerosas interpretaciones, dos de las cuales son las más populares. La primera es que el nombre Anapafsas fue atribuido por uno de los benefactores del monasterio, mientras que la segunda explicación tiene que ver con que la posición del monasterio fue la primera que se encontró en el camino y probablemente sirvió a los peregrinos y otros visitantes como descanso. Our family recently visited Greece, and one of the highlights of our trip was a small-group hiking tour with Visit Meteora. Chris led our group on this hike and it was my favourite experience in Meteora! Beautiful countryside and views of the monasteries and the hike was fairly easy, some steep and slippery spots but it was a perfect experience if you love hiking and nature as well as the stunning views, and want to visit the largest monastery as well.

We did a hike to The Great Meteoron Monastery with our guide Christos, and it was absolutely amazing. Christos gave personal attention to everyone in the group and was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. It was a magical half-day walk into a dreamlike landscape of colors, scents, shapes, and history. The trail network is vast, like a natural maze—definitely something you shouldn’t explore without a local guide, as it’s easy to get lost. Our guide Chris was fluent in English, kind, and very knowledgeable, answering every question with ease. The trail itself was easy, yet offered breathtaking views throughout.

We had a very enjoyable experience, guided by Chris, who was very well-informed in his knowledge of the history of the area, the monasteries and the flora and fauna en route. As we were the only people on the tour, we also enjoyed the personal conversation en route! The path was not difficult or too strenuous and the scenic views were stunning.
