Meteora es un área que abarca unos cuantos kilómetros cuadrados, donde una antigua comunidad monástica y un extraordinario fenómeno geológico de enormes columnas de roca coexisten en armonía. Situado en el extremo noroeste de la llanura de Tesalia, hoy en día Meteora se ha convertido en uno de los destinos más populares de Grecia continental. Se trata de un lugar declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, un yacimiento arqueológico y un lugar sagrado oficial. En las estribaciones de las rocas, hay 2 asentamientos, la ciudad de Kalabaka y el pueblo de Kastraki.
No debería perderse esta iglesia, no solo por su antigüedad y sus valiosos frescos bizantinos del siglo XI, sino también por los materiales de construcción de sus muros. Las paredes están decoradas de reliquias de un antiguo templo griego dedicado al dios Apolo. En su interior, podrá prestar atención al suelo de mosaicos antiguos que se atisba en determinados lugares por debajo del suelo actual. Esta es sin duda una de las primeras basílicas cristianas más bellas de toda Grecia e incluso hoy en día es una iglesia activa para los lugareños.

El Santo Monasterio de Roussanou ha recibido el nombre del probablemente primer ermitaño que se instaló en la roca. La catedral principal fue fundada a finales del siglo XVI y decorada treinta años más tarde. En comparación con otras rocas en la que se construyeron monasterios, el de Roussanou tiene una altura inferior, lo que lo hace más accesible. El monasterio fue inicialmente fundado por monjes y sufrió graves daños durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Se convirtió en un convento en 1988.
El Santo del Monasterio de Varlaam es el segundo monasterio en tamaño. Está situado frente de la Monasterio del Gran Meteoro y fue fundado a mediados del siglo XIV por la ejercitante Hosios Varlaam. El elegante monasterio Catholicon fue construido en honor de Agioi Pantes en 1541-42, por dos hermanos de Ioanina, el sacerdote monjes Hosioi Teófanes y Nectarios la Apsarades. La iglesia principal fue decorada en 1548. Sobre la base de criterios estilísticos, este magnífico mural se atribuye al famoso hagiógrafo de Tebas, Frago Catelano.

I pre-booked my sunset tour from Kalambaka via booking dot com but also pooped into the office to check few things and the lady there was so nice and helpful. On the day, they were so busy that a small group was created for the 6 of us with Chris (the best tour guide of all!!!) and we had a great time with him. He's shown us hidden places, he knew the answer to every question we had. And he is a great driver and a awesome person! But all the people I met (and I have met quite a few other guys who work there) were so accommodating and nice! I'd highly recommend this trip and company for anyone (couples / solo travellers) and from anywhere (Kalambaka, Thessaloniki, Athens) and their website is full of useful info about the monasteries and hiking routes (that's how I planned my stay + solo hikes and in 3 days, I visited all the monestaries) if you are planning to book a trip, look no further: choose the best!

This tour was fantastic, we all learned so much about the area from our tour guide, Chris: the history (both old & recent), the mythology, geology, religion, and local greek culture. Chris is incredibly well spoken, extremely knowledgable, keeps his audience interested, and he was lots of fun! We visited a monastery or two on our own, which was wonderful, and at the end he then gave us a personal tour of a special church to understand the meanings of what was inside. The mini-van was very comfortable; had a great driver and lots of special photo opportunities along the way. The staff at Visit Meteora were very helpful and flexible when I needed to change my pick up location at the last minuted. It all went smoothly. Chris provided personal service, asking for questions, engaging us in the talk, and even shared a bit of her personal life as he is from the area. Even gave some restaurant and Greek food recommendations! We all started out as strangers on the tour, but become friends, even if for a day, by the end of our tour. I highly recommend Visit Meteora and especially Chris' tour for a comprehensive understanding of Meteora, and because he makes it fun!

Dimitri/Jim was an exceptional guide. He is originally from Kalabaka and his deep love for Meteora and the surrounding region was present in every story he shared.
