This tour provides a general introduction to both Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. The schedule is tight but understandable given the cruise timing constraints. Aix-en-Provence was more enjoyable overall due to its relaxed atmosphere. Marseille was interesting but felt more like a quick overview than a deep visit. It’s suitable for first-time visitors who just want a snapshot of the region rather than an immersive experience.
The tour from the cruise port was well organized, and the transportation was comfortable. The guide handled timing carefully to ensure we returned on schedule. Aix-en-Provence stood out for its charm and walkability. Marseille, while important, felt a bit rushed and more focused on short stops rather than exploration. Still, for a one-day excursion, it works well and avoids the stress of planning independent transport.
Here is a rewritten version of your review, crafted to clearly convey a negative experience: **Title: Avoid this tour—disorganized, rushed, and stressful.** I cannot recommend this tour. From start to finish, the experience was a disaster. The excursion began behind schedule while we waited for passengers from another cruise ship, which immediately set a disorganized tone for the day. Because of the late start, the itinerary was severely compromised. We missed several scheduled stops, and the "guaranteed" free time to explore on our own never happened. Even the locations we did manage to see were visited in a frantic rush, making it impossible to enjoy or appreciate them. The lack of regard for our time became dangerous toward the end of the day. Although we were promised a 4:00 PM return to the port, we did not arrive until 4:18 PM. With our ship departing at 4:30 PM, my group and I were forced to sprint over a half-mile just to make it back on board in time. This was an incredibly stressful and unacceptable conclusion to the day. Do yourself a favor and book with a more reliable company.
Thank you for your feedback and for using AI to rewrite it. Let me address all the concerns raised: 1. In accordance with this tour description and the “Meeting and Pickup” section, we have 30 minutes reserved for collecting cruise passengers. If you do not feel comfortable waiting for fellow cruisers disembarking, we highly recommend booking private tours rather than shared tours. 2. The total tour duration was delivered as advertised. As for the time spent at each site, please take a closer look at the “Additional Info” section, which clearly states the following: “Please note that the sequence of the tour itinerary and the time spent at each location might be adjusted in response to variables like traffic conditions, crowd sizes, and unforeseen events.” 3. To avoid unnecessary sprints in cruise ports, first-time cruisers should understand that when the ship asks you to return two hours before departure, this is similar to an airport recommending that you arrive two hours before a flight. It has nothing to do with the actual ship or plane departure time. In your case, the ship was scheduled to depart at 6:00 PM, so sprinting back at 4:18 PM did not make any sense at all. You simply had to trust the operator, who has been operating this tour daily for the last 26 years, with not even one person missing their ship. That is okay; experience will come with your next cruises. Your refund request has been respectfully declined. When booking with Viator in the future, we strongly recommend basing your expectations on the description and inclusions rather than personal assumptions. Safe travels!
This was our first time visiting the Marseille area, and the tour gave us a decent overview of both destinations. The pickup process from the cruise port was simple and well-managed. Aix-en-Provence was the highlight, especially for its architecture and relaxed streets. Marseille felt more like a quick introduction rather than a full visit. It’s a convenient choice for travelers who want to see both places without complicated planning.
We enjoyed how the tour combined the urban feel of Marseille with the softer, more elegant atmosphere of Aix-en-Provence. The contrast between the two was interesting. Aix-en-Provence felt peaceful and ideal for walking. Marseille had more activity and energy but less time to truly explore. It’s a good introduction to the region, especially for cruise passengers with limited hours ashore.
We joined the Marseille tour from the cruise port as a family of four, including two teenagers. The pickup was organized well, and we didn’t have any issues finding our guide at the port. The drive along the coast was scenic and enjoyable, and Aix-en-Provence turned out to be the highlight for us. The kids liked the open streets and fountains, and we enjoyed walking through the old town at a relaxed pace. Marseille itself felt a bit more urban and busy, but still interesting to see briefly. Overall, it was a comfortable and safe day trip, though a little more free time in Aix would have made it even better for families.
The drive up to the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica was spectacular. The 360-degree view over the city, the sea, and the Frioul islands from up there is something I won't forget anytime soon.
Truly professional service from start to finish. The guide knew exactly how to beat the crowds at the main viewpoints, ensuring we got the best photos without a sea of people in the background.
This is a bus tour. And the bus was incredibly hot and uncomfortable. I thought the guide was very informative, but it was so uncomfortable on the bus we ended up leaving the tour.
Thank you for your kind words about our guide. We understand that your disappointment may have stemmed from expecting a private tour, as you mentioned on meeting with the guide. Please note that all private tours are clearly labeled as “PRIVATE” directly in the tour title. This tour is operated by modern, comfortable, fully air-conditioned German mini and coach buses. When booking through Viator, we strongly recommend basing expectations on the tour description provided, rather than on personal assumptions. Safe travels
If you are thinking about this tour, don’t do it. The description is very misleading as many of us thought we had private tours booked. We definitely paid private tour prices. Our “private” tour ended up with a group of 50 people on a bus. It was too hard to enjoy the tour this way as your were either driven by bus and stayed on the bus to see sights. We stopped in 2 towns, were told if we were hungry that there was no time for lunch but to grab fast food at Burger King or McDonald’s. I did not come all the way to France to eat fast food. Being a group 50 it was hard to enjoy the sights because you were just moving place to place quickly. I would suggest touring the town on your own in Marseille.
We regret to hear about your disappointment, but this has never been a private tour. Viator private tours are clearly labeled as “private” directly in the title and usually cost at least three times more than group tours. We operate this tour in groups of 20–50 people, and a relaxed four-course lunch has never been part of this tour. That is why your fellow cruisers were happy to have different meals during their free time in Aix-en-Provence, according to their own preferences, while, for reasons unknown to us, you were drawn to McDonald’s. When booking with Viator in the future, we strongly recommend basing your expectations on the tour description, inclusions, and itinerary, rather than on personal assumptions. Safe travels!
