A necessary stop if you...

A necessary stop if you are traveling to Switzerland; adding a walk or a boat ride to the Queen museum makes it wonderful!

Must do castle

Walking to it and seeing it get closer, you don’t realise how long It is in shape. Fab design of stone and wood with turrets, dungeons, long rooms and corridors and lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Fun, scenic and a bit different. A must do

Scenic Castle

We found this to be a nice castle to visit. The exterior and setting are the highlight, situated along the lake with picturesque views. The interior was not as majestic but instead had a more rustic feel. Signage throughout the castle was helpful, though we also brought along a Rick Steves guide that had a helpful walkthrough of the castle. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking along rough pavement and climbing up and down stairs. If you are driving, there is limited free parking along the road. Spaces are tight and it’s a 3-hour limit, which we found just about right for our visit. Make sure to put out a blue parking disk on your dashboard before leaving your car. As we visited during late April, the crowds were limited and we only had a short wait to purchase tickets onsite. There is a cafe opposite the castle and gift shops both inside and outside the castle.

Picturesque Castle on the banks of Lake Geneva

Extremely well preserved castle/fortress on the banks of Lake Geneva. It‘s a jewel for people who are into history and medieval architecture. It looks small but the castle is an immense construction, full of historical facts and stories.

Beautiful castle, but the parking is a tourist trap.

The castle is beautiful. However, the parking lot is a tourist trap! There is no physical ticket machine on-site. The Riviera Police require you to use a cardboard "parking disc" (a completely outdated method), and there is absolutely no sign indicating where to get one nearby! I didn't even know this kind of cardboard thing existed! I stayed in Switzerland for a week and paid everywhere else without any issues where there were proper machines. Issuing me a ticket here is pure bad faith and a clear desire to rip off honest visitors who only want to pay for their parking in good faith! It’s a shame for tourist hospitality and very dishonest! Exceptional

The castle is lovely. I recommend the visit inside because it is well articulated and the explanations for each room are clear. You can learn more by listening to the audio in the stations equipped with headphones.

Superb visit to Chillon Castle! The setting is just amazing, between lake and mountains. You can easily dive into history by browsing the different rooms. Special mention for the views of Lake Geneva, really beautiful. Must do if you are in the area!

A Must‑See Medieval Treasure on Lake Geneva

I would give this experience 10 stars if I could. Visiting Château de Chillon was truly one of the highlights of my time in Montreux — beautifully preserved, deeply historical, and so thoughtfully presented. I went on a Saturday afternoon (April 18) and was pleasantly surprised that there was no real wait. It was busy, but the entry process was smooth and efficient. I purchased my ticket through Viator, and the staff member who checked me in — even though it was her first day — was absolutely lovely. Everyone I encountered was warm, professional, and welcoming. Once inside, the experience is self‑paced, and I highly recommend adding the audio guide for just 6 CHF. It’s incredibly well done and brings the castle’s history to life — medieval daily life, the Dukes of Savoy, the architecture, the prison, the great halls, and the defensive structures. You learn so much without ever feeling overwhelmed. The castle itself is stunning. There are over 40 rooms, and you’ll navigate narrow stairways, uneven stone floors, and tight corridors — all part of the authentic medieval experience. Because of this, I’d recommend it for adults, teens, and older children (around 12+). It’s not ideal for strollers or very young kids, and elderly visitors should be mindful of the steps and surfaces. Comfortable shoes are a must. Even on a rainy day, most of the visit is indoors, but on a clear day the views are spectacular. Through the narrow arrow slits and defensive windows, you can see Lake Geneva, the Alps, and the Rochers‑de‑Naye — absolutely breathtaking. Getting there is easy. You can take the 201 bus from Montreux Gare, or do what I did and take the train to Veytaux‑Chillon (a 2–3 minute ride). I ended up walking back to my hotel along the lakeside promenade — about 35–45 minutes depending on your pace — and it was beautiful. Before you leave, don’t miss the gift shop. It’s charming, well‑curated, and full of special items: postcards, books, handmade Swiss bracelets, local wine, and even award‑winning chocolates and caramels. The two women working there were so kind and helpful, and I found wonderful souvenirs for my family. Overall, this is an unmissable experience for anyone who appreciates history, architecture, cultural preservation, or simply wants to step into another era for an hour or two. Château de Chillon is beautifully maintained, educational, fascinating, and truly memorable. I’m so glad I made it part of my trip. Highly, highly recommend.
