The relaxed pace leaves time for photographs, questions, conversation, and mobility needs. Itinerary

30 min

Stop at Alamo Plaza, where Victor brings the site to life through personal storytelling, orientation, photo opportunities, and your reserved timed-entry visit inside the Alamo Church. Victor introduces overlooked landmarks surrounding the plaza, including Hotel Gibbs, the historic federal building, the Woolworth Building, the Menger Hotel, and the former Joske’s building. Discover how Mission San Antonio de Valero became a military garrison and fortified compound connected to the Spanish presidio. How did the mission become known as the Alamo, and how did San Antonio receive its name? Meet the people behind the famous names. Hear how Joe witnessed Travis fall, what Susanna Dickinson endured with her young daughter, why Crockett’s final moments remain debated, and the dramatic story of Robert Evans racing toward the powder magazine. This visit connects the Alamo’s mission origins to the larger story that continues at Mission San José.

Admission included60 min

After visiting the Alamo Church, continue on foot past the historic Menger Hotel and former Joske’s building. See the Torch of Friendship, then pass St. Joseph Catholic Church, a small historic church nearly surrounded by later downtown development. Descend to the River Walk for a waterfall photo stop and visit the statue of Saint Anthony of Padua as Victor connects the naming of the river and the city to San Antonio’s earliest history. Then enjoy your included narrated GO RIO River Walk cruise. Relax as you pass historic bridges, public art, riverside hotels, restaurants, and distinctive architecture while discovering how the river sustained early communities and how the River Walk later helped preserve, revitalize, and reshape downtown San Antonio.

Pass by

Drive along East Nueva and Alamo Street beside La Villita, where Victor connects the city’s founding and naming story to one of its earliest neighborhoods. Hear how Samuel Maverick became tied to this area and how his grandson, Mayor Maury Maverick, helped preserve La Villita rather than lose it to demolition. As you pass the Hilton Palacio del Rio and Fairmount Hotel, discover two remarkable engineering stories. How was a 21-story hotel completed in only 202 days for HemisFair ’68? Why was an entire historic hotel moved about five blocks instead of demolished? Victor also introduces architect Robert H. H. Hugman, whose vision helped create the modern River Walk, and connects the district to Hollywood through Miss Congeniality at the Arneson River Theatre and Spy Kids locations elsewhere downtown. This drive-by ties together San Antonio’s founding, preservation, engineering, the River Walk, and film history.

60 min

Visit Mission San José, founded in 1720 and relocated to its present site around 1739. Known as the “Queen of the Missions,” it became the largest of San Antonio’s Spanish colonial missions and one of the most complete surviving examples in Texas. Walk with Victor through the grounds and discover how Franciscan friars and Coahuiltecan peoples built and sustained a community through farming, skilled craftsmanship, faith, trade, limestone construction, and the acequia system. How did water and stone make this settlement possible? Construction of the present church began in 1768 and was completed in 1782. Much of the surrounding complex was extensively restored during the 1930s. Look closely at the carved façade, Rose Window, granary, mill, living quarters, and massive stone walls while hearing the human stories behind them. Mission San José helps explain why the San Antonio Missions earned UNESCO World Heritage recognition.

Admission included30 min

Before ascending the Tower of the Americas, Victor introduces stories many visitors never expect to hear here. What connects the assassination of federal judge John H. Wood Jr. to one of Hollywood’s best-known actors? Which U.S. president delivered a speech in San Antonio one day before his assassination? Then step into the story of HemisFair ’68. Why did San Antonio build a 750-foot observation tower for a world’s fair, and why did First Lady Lady Bird Johnson become the featured opening-day speaker? How was the nearby Hilton Palacio del Rio completed in only 202 days, and why was the historic Fairmount Hotel moved through downtown instead of being demolished? Your included admission takes you to the observation deck, where panoramic views help connect the missions, the river, downtown landmarks, historic neighborhoods, and the modern city into one complete picture.

Pass by

Pass Military Plaza and the Spanish Governor’s Palace, completed in 1749. Despite its name, the building served as the command headquarters and residence of the captain of the Spanish presidio rather than as a royal palace. Victor connects this surviving colonial residence to the military government that developed beside the missions and the growing civil settlement

Pass by

Drive by San Fernando Cathedral, founded on March 9, 1731, by 16 Canary Island families invited by King Philip V of Spain. Planned at the center of the new civil community, it remains the oldest continuously functioning religious community in Texas. Victor connects the Cathedral to San Antonio’s founding, civic traditions, and the long-running debate over remains associated with Alamo defender

Pass by

Pass the Bexar County Courthouse and Founders Monument at Main Plaza, once known as Plaza de las Islas. Hear how 56 Canary Islanders arrived on March 9, 1731, after a sea and overland journey lasting more than a year. They established Villa de San Fernando de Béxar and formed the first organized civil government in Texas, helping create the civil town that grew into modern San Antonio.

Operator response

Dear Robert, Thank you for your kind words about our tour guide — we take great pride in the knowledge and passion our team brings to every experience. We do want to respectfully clarify, because our reputation means everything to us. 5 Star Adventures has never offered an 8-hour San Antonio tour of any kind. The tour you booked — the San Antonio: Alamo, Downtown & Mission San José Van Tour — is clearly listed as a 3 to 4 hour experience, with the full itinerary and duration available at the time of booking. Our only full-day offering is our Fredericksburg Luxury Shopping, History & Culture Tour — a completely separate product. If a full-day Hill Country experience is what you were looking for, we would genuinely love to make that happen for you. As a gesture of goodwill, please enjoy these complimentary photos of San Antonio we'd love to share with you: please text me your email address, and I will send you my favorite tour and special collection of photos as a gift- thank you. Out of nearly 150 reviews across all of our tours, 148 are five stars — because we put our guests first, always. Unforgettable Memories !!

This was our last day — and our last tour — in San Antonio. I booked this trip literally at the very last moment before flying to San Antonio, TX, and it was so worth it! The tour was absolutely fabulous from beginning to end. There were snacks, water, fruit, and cookies provided, and Victor even took us to a coffee shop per our request. He is such a caring person! Victor arrived right on time and asked if we had any reservations later in the day. Because of the marathon, many streets were closed or detoured, which affected the tour, so he suggested returning to downtown once the marathon was over. Thankfully, we didn’t have any other plans, and Victor made a few adjustments — changing the order of the stops and even adding a couple of new places that weren’t originally included. We learned so much history about the Spanish missions during these hours. Victor is incredibly intelligent and extremely knowledgeable. He’s engaging without being overwhelming, entertaining, informative, passionate, and clearly an experienced guide with a great sense of humor. On top of this unforgettable experience, Victor also sent us “gift photos” of the missions and “SA family photos” with us at those locations! What a thoughtful touch — such a wonderful idea. I highly recommend booking a tour with Victor. You definitely won’t regret it!

Operator response

Thank you so much for this incredible review. I loved spending the day with you and I’m grateful you chose to finish your San Antonio trip with my tour. The marathon made things tricky, but your flexibility let us turn it into something special. I enjoyed adjusting the route, adding extra stops, and sharing the missions in a way that fit your day. I’m glad the stories, snacks, photos, and small touches made the experience meaningful for you. Hearing that you left with unforgettable memories means a lot to me. Thank you again for trusting me with your final day in San Antonio. Safe travels and I hope our paths cross again.

Victor Made the San Antonio Missions Come Alive – Highly Recommend!

We decided to take our first trip to San Antonio to unwind, explore the city, and celebrate our anniversary. My wife was so thoughtful and booked a tour of the San Antonio missions, knowing how much I love history. Victor was fantastic! He was not only informative and funny but also incredibly engaging. He shared the history and significance of the Spanish missions in a way that made it feel like a fun adventure, not a lecture. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and a highly experienced tour guide. My wife isn’t usually a history buff, but she had a blast on the tour. If you’re in San Antonio and interested in history, I highly recommend booking a tour with Victor. You won’t regret it!

Operator response

Incredible Tour Guide!

Mr. Victor Martins, Jr. is an awesome tour guide. My wife and I had a blast with him and we learned so much history about the many Spanish missions in the San Antonio area and the Mission San Antonio de Valera , aka The Alamo. I highly recommend this tour guide to all.

Operator response

Thank you for the wonderful review. Guiding you and your wife through the Spanish missions was a joy. I am glad the history resonated. Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo, is always a powerful stop. Your recommendation helps our small local company grow.
