Upon arriving in Bender (Bendery), one of the most historically significant cities in Transnistria, you'll step into a unique blend of cultures, architecture, and history. Located on the right bank of the Dniester River, Bender is a city that reflects its diverse past, shaped by the Ottoman Empire, Russian Empire, and Soviet Union. One of the city's key highlights, the Bender Fortress dates back to the early 16th century when it was built by the Ottoman Turks. Lenin Monuments Like many cities in Transnistria, Bender still proudly displays its Soviet heritage. One of the most notable sights is the monument of Lenin standing prominently in front of key government buildings, symbolizing the city’s enduring connection to the Soviet era. T
Tiraspol is not the capital of a recognized country. It is the largest city and de facto capital of Transnistria, a self-proclaimed, unrecognized breakaway region located in Moldova. While Transnistria declared independence in 1990 and has its own government, military, and currency, it is not recognized as a sovereign state by any member of the United Nations, including Moldova, which claims the territory as part of its own sovereign land.
A stolovka in the USSR referred to a simple, affordable canteen or cafeteria that provided meals to workers, students, and the general public. In Tiraspol, like in other Soviet cities, stolovkas were an essential part of daily life during the Soviet era. These dining establishments were known for their no-frills environment, standardized menus, and efficient service aimed at serving a large number of people quickly. Typical Stolovka Atmosphere Interior: The decor was basic, with long communal tables, wooden or metal chairs, and minimalistic design. Walls were often painted in neutral tones, and decorations, if any, might include Soviet posters or slogans about productivity and unity. Self-Service: Most stolovkas operated on a self-service model. Patrons would grab a tray and slide it along a metal or wooden counter, picking up dishes displayed behind glass panels.
The Tank Monument in Tiraspol, the capital of the self-proclaimed Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (Transnistria), is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. It features a World War II-era Soviet T-34 tank, mounted on a pedestal, serving as a memorial to the Soviet soldiers who fought and died during the Second World War. The monument symbolizes the city's gratitude toward those who contributed to the defeat of Nazi Germany and commemorates the liberation of Tiraspol by Soviet forces in April 1944.
The Suvorov Monument in Tiraspol is one of the city's most iconic landmarks, commemorating Alexander Suvorov, a legendary Russian military commander who founded Tiraspol in 1792.
The Christmas Cathedral, also known as the Nativity of Christ Cathedral, is the largest and most significant Orthodox church in Tiraspol, the capital of Transnistria. This magnificent structure serves as a religious, architectural, and cultural landmark in the city, symbolizing the deep-rooted Christian Orthodox faith of the local population.
The House of Soviets in Tiraspol, the administrative center of Transnistria, is an imposing structure that serves as the headquarters of the region’s government. Built during the Soviet era, the building remains a prominent example of Stalinist and Socialist Realist architecture, reflecting the city’s deep ties to its Soviet past. While the building itself is not open to the public, its exterior and the Lenin statue are popular photo spots for visitors exploring Tiraspol. The square in front of the building is a key part of any walking tour of the city, and it offers an excellent opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a place where time seems to have frozen in the Soviet era.

A very well spent day! Short trip from Chisinau with sightseeing on the way. There was absolutely nothing to be scared about. We where lucky to have Diana as a guide. Very knowledgeable, friendly and humorous
Heribert thank you a lot for visiting our country 🙏
I enjoyed this tour with Marcel. There were 3 of us on the tour so it felt small and personalised. We visited a market, an antique shop and walked around the centre, as well as having lunch and finishing off at Bender Fortress. It was such an interesting place, just like stepping back in time, and we felt safe the whole time. Would recommend.
Laura thank you for your time to visit us, we are trying to to the best !
Truly an unforgettable experience, our favourite thing we did in Moldova. Our guide Natalia was truly amazing, she made us feel like family and her knowledge was invaluable. The driver Alex was also fantastic, both guides took amazing photos of us and were very funny and insightful - cannot recommend this tour more!!
Spent a very memorable day with Mrs. Diana in Pridnestrovie. She is an excellent guide with a great command of English and a wonderful sense of humor. She escorted through the passport formalities and then took us through 500+ years of history during our action packed day. If you are looking to do a tour in this area and see the famed sites as well as getting a bit off the beaten path to explore, you should book this tour. Joe M. Canada
Joe thank you a lot for your opinion, we are glad that our guide was good, thank you once again tu book with us.
I had good communication with the agency prior to the day of the tour. They picked me up on time and were very friendly. We made it to the border in an hour and explored several places in Transnistria. I was pleasantly surprised by the great sites we saw and learned a lot about its history. It was a great trip with a great meal and I would highly suggested. Make sure you bring your passport and some money to convert to their local currency. Also a tip try to get the plastic coins. They make for great souvenirs
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re very happy to hear that you enjoyed your trip to Transnistria and that everything — from communication and pickup to the sightseeing and local meal — met your expectations. It’s great to know you appreciated the unique atmosphere and history of this fascinating region. And yes, the Transnistrian plastic coins are definitely one of the most memorable souvenirs visitors can bring home 😊 Thank you again for traveling with us and for sharing your experience. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back to Moldova for another adventure in the future!
One if the main things to see when visiting Moldova Bender Fortres history Tiranspol step back in time as close as it can be to USSR Dimitry guide excellent English,a lot of information, very polite, patient, helpfull, real profesional
Vukoslav thank you a lot for your opinio and thank you for your patience at the second day. We are glad that you spend a good time in Moldova.
We traveled with Marcel and enjoyed an extraordinary day in Transnistrien. The region is totally safe and we loved the travel back to the Soviet Era. Marcel has a broad knowledge and enriched us with it. This trip is a must in Moldova - don't miss it out!
Given that the whole world says do not go to Transnistria we were a little apprehensive but as we went through the Berlin Wall into Communist DDR in 1988 we decided that it would be fine. How right we were! This was the best day trip in living memory. Booking with Lilya was both courteous and efficient and our guide Marcel was a fantastic person with a great knowledge of the history and culture of this beautiful country - Moldova. As for Transnistria - for us to return to a place not ruled by the internet and the motor car was like stepping back in time to our youth. Thank goodness we didn’t listen to our Government’s Travel Advice as if we had we would have missed out on one of life’s truly memorable experiences. How else can one ever visit a country that does not exist?! “We make cognac not war” (the motto of Transnistria) is certainly one that I subscribe to.
Thank you so much for your wonderful and thoughtful review. It truly means a lot to us that your visit to Transnistria became such a memorable experience. We are especially happy to hear that both the booking process with Lilya and your day with Marcel exceeded expectations. Marcel is deeply passionate about the history and culture of Moldova and Transnistria, so your kind words will make his day. Your comparison to stepping back in time perfectly captures what many visitors find so fascinating about this unique region. Transnistria is certainly a place unlike any other, and we are delighted that you approached it with curiosity and an open mind. Thank you again for trusting us with your journey and for sharing your experience so beautifully. We hope to welcome you back to Moldova again in the future for more unforgettable adventures!
