Itinerary
Your day of adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your Sofia hotel before we embark on a scenic two-and-a-half-hour drive to our first stop: the spectacular Devetaki Cave. This massive, naturally lit cavern has a fascinating history. Home to prehistoric humans, it later served as a natural Roman food refrigerator and a secret Cold War military base. Movie fans might also recognize its grand arches from the Hollywood blockbuster The Expendables 2.
Next, we visit the ethereal Krushuna Waterfalls, Bulgaria’s largest travertine cascade. Famous for its emerald-blue pools and lush forest setting, the falls are breathtaking year-round. Even in the summer when water levels naturally drop, the vibrant, mossy rock terraces remain a beautiful sight.
After working up an appetite, we will head to the historic town of Lovech for a delicious local lunch. From there, we will explore the town's highlights, starting with a walk across the famous 19th-century Covered Bridge—the only one of its kind in the Balkans. We will finish our tour by climbing up to the impressive Medieval Fortress, which offers panoramic views of the city and river below. Filled with history and unforgettable scenery, we will then relax on the drive back, dropping you off at your Sofia accommodation in the evening.

This is a fabulous day trip from Sofia that includes scenic vistas of the countryside, beautiful cascading waterfalls, stunning caves, an historic fortress, a walk across the only remaining covered bridge in the Balkans, and free time for lunch in a local restaurant.
Everything was great. Guide was friendly. We saw amazing nature combined with Bulgarian food and history.
Had an awesome time with Joan of Bultrips! He's very nice and told us a lot of interesting trivia on the places we visited, which definitely upgraded the experience compared to doing it by ourselves.
An amazing and knowledgeable tour guide and great overall tour. Got to see a lot, cave, fortress, and waterfalls, were all worth the journey, as well as experiencing local culture and food at lunch. I highly recommend.
It was a lovely experience. Ivan, our tour guide, was very kind and knowledgeable. I recommend booking this tour with Bultrips over other companies, because you will be in a relatively small group and it’s more comfortable. The cave and waterfalls are stunning and are definitely worth the drive! Lovech is a nice town, with scenic views of the covered bridge. There is also an interesting contrast of architecture in Lovech, with buildings from both the Revival period and Communist era. We ate in a restaurant in the old neighborhood of Varosha, which is very quaint. Lastly, the views from the medieval fortress are beautiful and a good opportunity for photos.
Dear traveler, Thank you so much for this review. It is of utmost importance to us. Our team wishes you many more wonderful experiences! All the best, BulTrips Team
We has an early pick up by our driver/guide on the 8th. Unfortunately it was a rainy day. The Devetaki cave is huge and has an interesting history during cold war days, used as a fuel dump. Very little signs of this remains. We moved on to the Krushuna waterfalls and due to two days of rain was quite spectacular. Unlike the photograph advertised torrents of brown water was pouring down the falls. This did prevent us taking a circular walk as the small bridge/platform that we should have crossed was covered by the torrent of water. On arriving at Lovech we crossed the covered bridge which originally was constructed in the late 19th century. The present bridge is much recent as it had to be rebuilt due the a fire in 1925. We had a one hour break for lunch. After lunch the guide took us up through the old town to the fortress for a view over Lovech and back down to our car through a different part of the old town. Our guide/driver was well informed and took us through the history of Bulgaria and the places we visited. It was a pleasure to have the guide we had on the day, very approachable and friendly. The only thing that dampened the experience was the rain on the day.
Amazing experience! The nature was absolutely beautiful - especially the Krushuna waterfalls, which were breathtaking. Our guide was really nice and shared a lot of interesting information throughout the trip. Everything was well organized, and it was a great way to explore some of Bulgaria’s hidden gems. Highly recommend!
I was lucky enough to take this tour with just 1 other person and Anna was the most amazing guide! She looked after all our needs and took things at our pace and was super friendly! The sights are beautiful and would highly recommend a trip!
We went on this trip on Sep 15 with Ivo. He picked us up on time. His car was spacious and clean and he even offered us some water, as it was supposed to be a very hot day. He was a very safe and calm driver and very good guide. Maybe a little softspoken, but very knowledgeable. The Devetaki Cave was absolutely fascinating, the Krushuna Falls were beautiful, we enjoyed our time in Lovech and had a really great time overall. After our trip on the day before was rather an ordeal, we were so lucky to have Ivo as our guide this time around and were extremely impressed with how beautiful and diverse Bulgarias landscape and history is.
My guide. Theodore. Couldn't have found a better guide. His knowledge and insights are just awesome. Highlight for me was the waterfalls and caves. Absolutely stunning. Covered Bridge cos of plentiful shops. Only comment is awareness of the 2hr journey to get there. Plenty of stops for biobreaks n snacks. All in all ...superb.
