Abandoned by tour guide and did not receive an English tour… some hygiene concerns with the Parma producer

Our guide lady decided to abandon our group at the meeting point (didn’t even greet us or say a basic hello-No manners!) and made a sneaky agreement with the driver infront of our faces. to knock for the afternoon, having returned from a prior tour. Our tour was given by the driver himself who had limited and indiscernible English. We could hardly understand a word out of him! This tour is compiled of 2 hours one hour of which is spent driving to and from the Parma Ham producer from Parma town. We were overall extremely disappointed with the standard of the tour in terms of hygiene at the producer and limited knowledge/English of the guide/driver. Upon arrival at the producer we found kids crayons and coloring material strewn all over the floor where the meats were curing. Despite us having to don hair nets, it was apparent the grandchild of the owner was allowed to use the factory as a playground and there was even child fingerprints on the fat used for sealing the hams… Our guide/driver, didn’t at any stage wash his hands or wear a hair nets inside the factory and when showing us how they check the hams by sticking a horse bone inside, just stuck the bone inside a random ham hanging in the room with no regard for food safety and hygiene standards let alone washing his hands. Overall a disappointment… and completely overpriced Plus we were abandoned by our guide… these people must think we are stupid but believe me we are far from it!

Worth the visit!

The tour guide was good and answered our questions clearly. He tried his best to translate between the ham expert and us. We enjoyed the tasting together with wine as well. If there are more choices for us to shop after the tour, that will be better.

Great tour of the prosciutto process

We thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the prosciutto process! Our guide, Mattia, was very delightful and gave us detailed description of the curing process and what goes into the designation of Prosciutto da Parma. It ended with a delicious taste of prosciutto and a glass of wine.
