Itinerary
Huge rocks, monasteries that «hang in the sky» and beautiful paths form an enchanting landscape that must be seen to be believed. This almost “unearthly state” with monasteries scaled on the edge of impressive, steep mountain massifs challenges you to discover the majesty of nature. The earth meets the sky, man intervenes with the divine element and the traveler finds the emotional serenity and spiritual well-being that springs eternally from the atmosphere. Every year, millions of visitors from all over the world come to Meteora to admire this unique phenomenon. Meteora has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.
Nestled atop a colossal rock pinnacle in the breathtaking Meteora, the Great Meteoron Monastery stands as the oldest and largest of the six surviving monasteries in this UNESCO World Heritage site, offering visitors an unparalleled blend of spiritual serenity, historical grandeur, and jaw-dropping panoramic views over the Thessalian plain. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite, this Eastern Orthodox marvel perches 415 meters above the Pineios valley floor, symbolizing the monks' quest for isolation and divine connection amid nature's dramatic formations. Step inside to marvel at exquisite 16th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes, explore ancient relics and manuscripts in its museum, and wander through chapels adorned with intricate wood carvings and icons that whisper tales of Byzantine heritage. As a male monastery still active today, it invites you to experience the timeless rituals of monastic life while gazing out at the surreal landscape.
Perched on a sheer sandstone cliff in Greece's stunning Meteora region, Varlaam Monastery is the second-largest of the six UNESCO-listed sites, offering profound Orthodox spirituality and breathtaking views over the Pindos Mountains and Thessalian plains. Founded in 1517 by monks Theophanes and Nektarios, it honors 14th-century hermit Varlaam who scaled the 373m rock for seclusion. Inside this active male monastery, discover 16th-century frescoes by Frangos Katelanos, rare manuscripts, icons, and relics in its museum, plus the historic net hoist. Enjoy panoramic tower views of nearby monasteries and hermit caves, immersing in timeless traditions and gravity-defying engineering. Perfect for culture seekers and photographers, ascend via stone steps for a soul-stirring Greek adventure.
Enjoy your lunch at one of the best greek tavern in Trikala and get a quick sight of Matsopoulos Mills.

My daughter and I could not say enough about how much we loved our private tour. Our tour guide/driver went above and beyond to make this a special memory/experience for us. On the drive, he talked us about the history of each place we traveled, along the trip. Due to his efficiency, we were able to fit in a visit to an extra monastery. On the way back, he made a reservation for lunch at an authentic Greek restaurant that was fabulous. It was first class treatment and I would recommend him to anyone booking this trip.
Thank you for your kind words , it was a pleasure meeting you and hope to see you again in Thessaloniki!
If you’re visiting Thessaloniki, this tour is an absolute must. Yiannis was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging, bringing the city’s rich history and culture to life in a way that guidebooks never could. Every stop had a fascinating story, and the tour struck the perfect balance between history, local traditions, hidden gems, and modern life. What made the experience truly special was the personal touch. We never felt rushed, all of our questions were welcomed, and we received fantastic recommendations for restaurants, cafés, and places to explore after the tour. It felt like discovering Thessaloniki with a knowledgeable local friend rather than taking a typical tourist tour. Whether it’s your first visit or you’ve been to Thessaloniki before, you’ll come away with a much deeper appreciation for this beautiful city. Professional, friendly, and unforgettable. highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for an authentic and memorable experience. Five stars without hesitation!
