At Rila Monastery, travelers will explore Bulgaria’s most iconic spiritual and cultural landmark, set deep in the forested Rila Mountains. Upon arrival, they’ll step into the impressive courtyard surrounded by striking black-and-white arcades and richly decorated facades. The monastery founded by St. Ivan of Rila played important role in preserving Bulgarian identity during Ottoman times. Inside the main church, guests will admire vivid frescoes covering the walls and ceilings, depicting biblical scenes in remarkable detail. Visitors will also have the chance to see the iconostasis, an intricate wood carving considered a masterpiece of Bulgarian craftsmanship. After the guided part, there is free time to explore independently, take photos, light a candle, or browse local shops offering handmade souvenirs and traditional products. Surrounded by mountains and fresh air, the monastery offers a peaceful and memorable cultural experience.

In Blagoevgrad, travelers will enjoy a relaxed walk through the town’s charming historic quarter, often called Varosha. This area offers a glimpse into Bulgaria’s Revival-era heritage, with beautifully preserved houses, narrow cobbled streets, orthodox church dedicated to Virgin Mary and a peaceful, authentic atmosphere away from the busy capital. Guests will stroll along the pedestrian center, passing local cafés, small shops, restaurants and lively squares where locals gather. The walk may include a visit to traditional architecture sites and quiet corners perfect for photos. There is free time to explore at your own pace—grab a coffee, try a local pastry, have a lunch with local food or simply soak in the laid-back vibe of this university town. Blagoevgrad has two big universities - the American University and the Southwest university. It combines history with a youthful energy, making it a pleasant and refreshing stop between the mountains and the wine tasting experience.

A Great Day Out

I highly recommend the day trip with Simeon. The places we visited were unforgettable, each with its own unique atmosphere and charm. The monastery, the picturesque town, and the winery were all different, yet equally beautiful and memorable. The tour was very well organized, and Simeon shared interesting information while creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere throughout the day. It was a wonderful opportunity to discover the beauty of the region, taste local wine, and enjoy great company. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone!

Don't hesitate if you enjoy Private Tour

Simone from Travel Buddy was very patient and accommodating, we thoroughly enjoyed this private tour to the Rila Monastery including driving through the winding mountain roads and he took the effort to reschedule another boutique winery for wine tasting when the original winery was not available for tasting. Even the owner of Bogdaya Boutique Winery was so hospitable and he offered various unique wine for tasting, so much until we have to decline as the tour duration as overran but Simone still offered to bring us to a local restaurant for late lunch which we have to decline as well. I will not hesitate to recommend my friends and you readers to engage Simone if you are visiting Bulgaria. Till then and we will be back in the near future. P/S: Simone, hope you enjoy the wine on a special occasion.

Operator response

Dear Amos, Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful feedback! It was a true pleasure guiding you on your private tour to the Rila Monastery. I’m happy you enjoyed the scenic mountain drive and that we could make the winery experience special despite the last-minute change. The hospitality at Bogdaya Boutique Winery is a joy to share, and I’m glad you had the chance to taste their unique selection. I also appreciate your kindness and flexibility as the tour ran a little longer than expected. Knowing that you both felt well cared for and would recommend the experience means a great deal to me. And yes — I’ll be saving that bottle of wine for a special occasion, with fond memories of our day together. I look forward to welcoming you back to Bulgaria in the near future for more discoveries and shared moments. Warm regards, Buddy Travel Team
