The Pena National Palace is like a sacred jewel that crowns the Serra de Sintra. The surrounding park, in tune with the palace's fairy-like character, awakens emotions of mystery and discovery. In its corners, the eyes are lost in charm.
It is in this painterly setting that we find, just outside the historic center of Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira. Designed and built during the late 1800s, it reflects the sensitivity and cultural, philosophical and scientific interests of the principal owner, António Augusto de Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), combined with the virtuosity of the Italian architect-scenographer Luigi Manini (1848-1936 ). The culture and creativity of these two personalities resulted in an eclectic-revivalist architectural ensemble, with a particular focus on the Manueline and Renaissance styles. Sintra is a tourist town at the foot of the Sintra mountain range in Portugal, close to the capital, Lisbon. Long a royal sanctuary, its wooded grounds are studded with pastel-colored farmhouses and palaces.
We can take advantage of the fresh, clean air to have lunch at a seaside restaurant. Colares, the former county seat, is a village whose history is lost to the confines of time. Climbing through the splendor of the green Serra de Sintra, contemplate the entire fertile valley bearing its name, with the immense ocean as a backdrop, invaded by Cabo da Roca, where the land ends and the sea begins.
Enjoy the fresh air and pause to take photos with a wonderful landscape. Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Portugal and continental Europe. It is located in the parish of Colares, in the Municipality of Sintra and District of Lisbon.
Praia Grande do Guincho is located between two rocky points, Ponta Alta and Ponta do Abano, and has a large stretch of sand, both in length and width. With clear, crystalline water, Grande do Guincho beach is considered one of the largest beaches in the country, with a high number of vacationers, and is part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.
