Description

Snorkeling in a fissure caused by two tectonic plates drifting apart is something you can't do everyday! Silfra is the name of a big 'crack' stretching parallel to the North American and a micro-plate called Hreppar that broken off from the Eurasian plate. Silfra has world-renowned clear and drinkable water with over 100 metre visibility daily. This is unlike any tour you can do in Iceland and is something you can't do anywhere else in the world. We are the only company to offer wetsuit and drysuit. This means members of your group can book different options and still be together in the water. We include photos and usually take around 40-100 photos as standard depending on the size of the tour and you will be able to download them after at least a few days. We always have small groups, 6 people per guide. This allows for a better and more personal feel. If you have a group of 7 or more you can be together preparing your equipment but in the water some of you will be separate.

Itinerary

Pass by

The location of Silfra, where the snorkeling takes place, is within Thingvellir National park. Passengers, while driving through, get a chance to view some of the beautiful nature the national park has to offer.

Admission included210 min

Heading out from your Reykjavík accommodation to Silfra takes about 45 minutes. After greeting your certified guide upon arrival, you'll gear up, listen to a safety overview, and head into the glacially flooded fissure known as Silfra. You'll spend around 30–40 minutes in the water before exiting and walking back around 5 minutes walk. You'll then get a chance of warming up with a well earned hot chocolate. We’ll take photos during the snorkeling. Typically 40–100 images, depending on group size and skill level. The photos will be available for download a few days later free of charge. For the drysuit option, Please bring your own one thermal base-layer. We recommend bringing thick (preferably wool) socks to help keep your feet warm while snorkeling. We’re the only company offering both wetsuit and drysuit options. This means members of your group can book in wetsuits or drysuits and you will still be in the same group in the water.

Admission included40 min

Silfra fissure is often considered one of the top diving or snorkeling locations worldwide. This is due to the unique in-water visibility due the pristine glacier water that has been filtering through lava fields for many decades. Average in-water visibility is +100m/+300ft. Many say that snorkeling in Silfra feels like flying due to the clear glacial water. Feel thirsty on the way? No worries, just take a sip as the water in Silfra might even be more pure and better than the top shelf bottled water you would buy back home. Thingvellir National Park, where Silfra is situated, is where two tectonic plates meet with around 6-7km/4miles gab between the two. Snorkeling in Silfra therefore means you are snorkeling between two tectonic plates.

Snorkeling experience of a lifetime

I’ve snorkeled all over the world and this was unlike anything I’ve ever done before. I was afraid I’d be too cold to enjoy it, but as soon as I saw the incredible underwater views I forgot all about how cold my face was! Bucket list item complete and it exceeded my expectations. Smooth pick up and our guide Luis was wonderfully kind and patient with everyone in our group. I can’t wait to see the photos!!

One in a life time experience! 👍

We had a wonderful time! An experience for a lifetime. Our guide Ines was really interesting, accommodating, explained everything to us in detail, and made us feel safe and relaxed with her. Because of the dry suits, we didn't feel cold at all. Wonderful, wonderful! Highly recommended.

Wouldn’t miss the opportunity

The dive was amazing and Arthur (English name) was great! Only issue was you had to wait over an hour for your return trip back but the bus and drive were good.

Operator response

Thank you for your review! We're delighted to hear that you had an amazing snorkeling experience and that Anil made your tour enjoyable. We'll be sure to pass along your kind words to him. We would like to clarify one point regarding the waiting time before returning to Reykjavík. The tour is advertised on Viator as a 5-hour experience, which was also the duration of your tour. As your snorkeling session finished a little earlier than scheduled, due to our team getting you into the water ahead of any queue, there was some waiting time before the return transfer while our team was completing pickups in Reykjavík for the next tour departure. On rare occasions like this, guests are often encouraged to take the opportunity to explore the beautiful surroundings of Þingvellir National Park at their own pace, rather than waiting by the P5 parking area, until the return transfer is ready. We appreciate your feedback, as it helps set the right expectations for future guests, and we're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your Silfra snorkeling experience. Kind regards, The Adventure Vikings team

Fantastic and highly unusual adventure in Iceland ice fed lagoon

What great snorkeling in unbelievably clear water - ice water from the glaciers at 2 degrees C. Dry suit gives full body protection Highly safe. Every stage is supervised by the guide in a small group. Go at individual speeds. Highly recommended. One caveat you should know how to swim.

Know your limits for this excursion!!

Its one of a kind experience and so unique. However, you should know the dry suit was really tight and uncomfortable so much that my friend couldn't do it. She was asked to come out of the water. I highly recommend this tour to anyone is who is good in snorkeling and not afraid of water!!!

Amazing despite some discomfort

Ines was amazing. The water was beautiful and the guides gave great explanations and stayed with you. I felt safe and well guided. The cold was not bad in the dry suit at all. Less than expected. My only issue was how tight the suit was around my neck and wrists. I had to keep my head up while walking to breathe and swallow and my fingers were tingling because the circulation was cut off before we got in the water. I was able to ignore he discomfort in the water. If you are claustrophobic or cannot tolerate things around your neck this may not be for you. Having said that the guides made me feel like I could do it and they were right! I give a 5 to the guides and the water experience but the 4 star rating is for the neck and wrist pinching. Nonetheless I’d recommend it!
