Itinerary
Start your walk at St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Just open Ciceru nearby to begin exploring the massive neo Byzantine exterior, where golden domes and marble façades express Bulgaria’s gratitude carved in stone.
View the Church of Saint Sofia from the outside. Its austere red brick walls and quiet presence reveal the ancient building that gave the city its name and its idea of wisdom.
Admire the Russian Church from the street. The green roofs and gilded onion domes create a fairytale silhouette that broadcasts imperial influence without stepping inside.
Stand before the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and take in its Neoclassical façade. Columns, pediment and surrounding garden set the stage entirely from the open square.
Pause outside St. Nedelya Church and observe its rebuilt dome and solid form. The exterior carries the weight of one of Sofia’s darkest historical moments.
View the Saint George Rotunda from the courtyard. This red brick cylinder, Sofia’s oldest building, tells two millennia of survival through its walls alone.
Walk around the open air ruins of ancient Serdica. Streets, foundations and glass covered remains show Roman Sofia directly beneath modern traffic.
Stand beneath the Statue of Saint Sofia and observe the towering bronze figure. This modern symbol replaced a Soviet monument and now watches over the city crossroads.
Admire the Banya Bashi Mosque from the outside. Its single dome and minaret rise above the street, marking the last active Ottoman era mosque in Sofia.
Wrap up your tour at the Central Mineral Baths. Take a moment to enjoy the colorful façade, thermal fountains and historic building before ending your walk at the city’s geothermal heart.

I travelled with a toddler and therefore could not take part in any guided walking tour. This self guided audio tour was super helpful! It let me explore the city at my own pace. The explanations provided helps one to feel that they have “really” visited the place and not merely had a look at the buildings!
