Itinerary
Hawaii is considered the cultural home of surfing and ancient Hawaiians enjoyed surfing just for the pure joy and fun of it. The north shore of Oahu is home to 3 of the most famous waves in the world; Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay. Winter is the most predictable time of year when large swells can roll in. It always takes some luck, but if you are there when the surf is "big", you are going to be a little intimidated and pretty impressed. At any time of year, these beaches are worth checking out and if you plan to go into the water, just be sure to be safe and not get caught in conditions beyond your abilities.
Hanauma Bay is the most popular and favorite snorkeling location on Oahu and spectacularly located within the half-crescent rim of an ancient cinder cone. Optional stop - timed ticket reservations required. Reservations are now needed, as an online reservation system has been launched to assist with restricted public entry.
The most famous extinct volcanic crater on Oahu is the picturesque Diamond Head, located just a few minutes drive from Waikiki. Drive through the tunnel in the crater wall to park inside. A parking fee is payable at the entrance. It's perfectly fine to enjoy the views inside the crater, but if you can handle the 271 stairs and sometimes steep trail, the most popular thing to do is to hike to the crater rim. From the top, you will enjoy outstanding views to Waikiki, Honolulu and along the coastal beaches. Expect to spend 90 minutes if you plan to do the hike.
One of Oahu's most amazing sandy beaches, a beautiful beach two and a half miles long, between Alala and Kapoho Points. From the shore, you will enjoy views to the Mokes, a pair of islands that sit just 1 mile off the shore. Join a guided kayak trip to paddle out and explore. Be aware that parking restrictions are enforced stringently, especially on weekends.
Punchbowl Crater stands regally in a crater above the city and provides a poignant reminder of the sacrifice of service men and women who lost their lives in theaters of war at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
Ko Olina is a planned resort community located at the end of the H1 Freeway, in the south-western part of the island. It's the home of the Disney Aulani Resort. Four giant and protected lagoons have been created on the shore, and provide a safe and calm environment for swimming and enjoying the beach. You do not have to be a guest at one of the resorts in Ko Olina to enjoy the lagoons - the public is welcome.
The Laie sea arch sits just offshore from Laie Point and makes for a lovely photo. You will also enjoy views up and down the windward coast on this side of the island. It only takes 10 minutes to enjoy the views and there is no cost to visit.
The Byodo-In is a replica of a famous Japanese temple that has the same name, located just outside of Kyoto. That original is nearly 1000 years old. This Byodo-In has a stunning location beneath the Ko’olau Mountains and you will want to get pictures of the temple backdropped by those stunning, scalloped cliffs. The grounds and temple are picturesque and well-worth the 45 minutes or so that it will take to visit. Optional stop, there is a small entry fee.
Pearl Harbor is the location where the Japanese executed a sneak aerial attack on the US ships and brought America directly into WWII. Today the events of the fateful day, and the coutless lives that were affected are memorialized. Expect to spend about a 1/2 day visiting Pearl Harbor and absorbing the many presentations. Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial is by boat. There is no cost to visit, but tickets to the USS Arizona are first come-first served. Be sure to sign up for the next available boat as soon as you arrive at the site.
Just south of Kailua Beach Park, Lanikai Beach is a half-mile stretch of beautiful sand and palm trees.
Dole brand is synonymous for tropical fruits, and especially pineapples. Starting in the 1800's, James Dole's mission was to have pineapple as a staple in every American kitchen. Growing and exporting pineapples back to the US mainland was a vital component of the early Hawaiian agricultural economy. Visiting the plantation can be a free experience if you a satisfied with shopping the gift store and trying some samples. Also on site is a pineapple maze, and tours of the tropical fruit plantation on the Pineapple Express, a vintage style train.
Haleiwa is the main town of the North Shore of Oahu. Before, or after, checking out some of the world's most famous surfing beaches, explore town for dining, shopping and galleries. A favorite in town is to enjoy a shave ice from the M Matsumoto Store and then check out some of the local artisan's folk art, and even some painted surfboards. Also a good place to stop for dinner if you enjoyed a sunset from one of the beaches, and before returning to Waikiki.
Ko Olina is a planned resort community located at the end of the H1 Freeway, in the south-western part of the island. It's the home of the Disney Aulani Resort. 4 giant and protected lagoons have been created on the shore, and provide a safe and calm environment for swimming and enjoying the beach. You do not have to be a guest at one of the resorts in Ko Olina to enjoy the lagoons - the public is welcome.
Punchbowl Crater is a dormant volcano turned scenic overlook. From the rim, take in panoramic views of Honolulu, Diamond Head, and the Pacific. It’s a quiet yet powerful spot to reflect on both the island’s beauty and history.
The most famous elevated viewpoint on the entire island of Oahu is the scenic panoramas from the Pali Lookout. The Pali is the nickname of route 61 which cuts across the island, connecting Kailua to Honolulu. The viewpoint sits on top of the sheer cliffs of the mountains, that face the windward side of the island. Hold on to your hats, and everything else, as the winds are almost always strong, but totally worth it for the outstanding views back to the coast. Paid parking is mandatory at the location.

We only used part of the experience because we were short on time, however, it was very helpful and informative. It knows where you are, so you don't have to tell it where to start if you are not using the entire route. The directions were spot on and easy to follow.
Hi Sally, thanks for taking our Oahu audio tour. We’re so glad you found it helpful and informative, even with limited time. It’s wonderful to hear that the flexibility to start anywhere on the route, along with accurate directions and GPS-triggered narration, made your experience easy and enjoyable. We hope to join you on the road again soon!
It took a while to get used to the directions as they were not turn by turn. The narration was very informative and interesting!
Hi Bernie, thanks for taking our Oahu audio tour. We appreciate your feedback and understand there can be a short learning curve when getting used to the tour style. We’re glad you still found the narration informative and interesting throughout your drive around the island. We hope to join you on the road again soon!
This is a great service, I wish I had done this before taking any tour. It is so easy to use and takes you all the great spots and was more knowledgeable than our tour guide on other tours.
Hi James, thanks for taking our Oahu audio tour. We’re so glad to hear the self-guided experience exceeded your expectations and provided more insight than some other tours. It’s great that you enjoyed exploring the island at your own pace. We hope to join you on the road again soon!
This is the worst drive tour we've ever experienced? We used one for South Dakota. The Bad Lands Custer, Devils Tower and it was absolutely amazing. Was looking forward to using this one as the well, but it didn't make any sense. You had to be at a certain start spot. We're Only speak for less than a minute. And then it would stop , it was just not very good and it didn't seem at all organized. I need to see about getting a refund because after trying to use it.Half a day , it was just horrible. Don't waste your time or money.
Hi Romona, thanks for sharing your experience. We’d love to learn more about what happened - especially as it was our South Dakota tour that you enjoyed so much on an earlier trip. Did you have any trouble downloading the audio tour? The tour needs to be downloaded over WiFi or cellular data, and you can then tap ‘Start Touring’ and tour offline without any cell service. Travelers love our audio tour as you can begin from anywhere on Oahu along the tour route, you simply join the blue tour route line nearest to your location and the next audio point will begin to play automatically. We’d love to help you with a great experience on Oahu, and our support team is available every day from 9am to 6pm Eastern Time by phone, email and online chat. We’ve also reached out directly by email, and hope to hear back from you.
It took a little effort to get on the right trail in Waikiki, but once I got on the route it was smooth sailing.
Hi Steven, thanks for taking our Oahu self-guided audio driving tour. We’re sorry it took a little effort to get on the right route in Waikiki, but we’re glad that once you were on track, everything went smoothly. We hope to join you on the road again soon!
The guide was worthless. We didn’t know until right before we were ready to travel that it doesn’t work with Car Play. It was confusing and a total waste of money. This is the first time I have been disappointed in Viator.
Hi Katie, we’re sorry that our Oahu self-guided audio tour didn’t meet expectations. As noted in the tour listing and your post-purchase voucher, CarPlay isn’t supported yet. However, this isn’t needed as you can play the audio directly through the car stereo, and the commentary includes all the directions that you need (and the passenger can look at the map on the phone while you’re driving). We’d love to understand why CarPlay was essential to you, as many of our other visitors thoroughly enjoy this audio tour of Oahu. Please reach out to us directly during our support hours (9 am - 6 pm EST daily) so that we can assist you with audio setup or arrange a replacement tour or refund.

This was by far the best money I have spent on a guide. Not only did it follow along seamless with our GPS but it was very informative about the local history. I will definitely use this again for future trips

Was excellent money well spent. We were on a cruise & rented a car in each port. Great information at each island. Hard time getting connected first time but people answered for customer service & helped get us going. I thought I needed to pay on each island & realized they had one for all islands which saved us money. They refunded me for original order & recharged me for island combo which really helped. Would definitely recommend to everyone.
