Booked this ride after reading a lot of comments, but honestly I would not do it ever again or even recommend it. No doubt the view is scenic but It’s a 6 hour long ride & after a point it just gets boring. The authorities responsible for making the bookings don’t know have a seating chart evidently and families/groups were seated very randomly…we had to swap seats amongst ourselves. Better to go by road which is shorter route and you can visit the tea making factory on the route which we missed.
My husband and I had a lovely trip on the Amtrak train Blue Water from Flint, Michigan to Milwaukee - via Chicago. The ride was great, and smooth - we had Red Coat assistance in Chicago, helping my 80 year-old husband. The trains were very clean, modern, comfortable. The Chicago to Milwaukee is a commuter train, also very comfortable, clean, with professional staff assisting. And they were on time! there was assistance at the doors to the trains for those who needed it. My husband says that the best part of our trip to Michigan and Wisconsin was the train ride.

One of the must do activity in Srilanka is to undertake a Scenic Train ride. We undertook the train ride early in the morning from Peradeniya Junction to Ela Station near Nuwara Eliya. Advance booking is recommended as this tends to fill up in tourist season. The train compartment is air conditioned and light snacks are sold by vendors who come to sell in your compartment.
Definitely enjoyed this 5 hr journey scenery was beautiful and great to see how people live in the different villages
One of the Most beautiful train ride you will ever be on. But the best part is from Ella to Nuwara Eliya.
Second class is the same as first class and the Observation carriage is not worth paying extra for. I bought a fare 2 months prior but the ticket people for reasons best known to themslves, cancelled it for reasons unknown. Dont leave Colombo later than 08:30 or you will miss the last few kms due to darkness.
This stunningly superb train trip was marred slightly, by the tour operators,Viator and Lakpura, who altered our timings, and then arrived later than arranged, to pick us up, and then tried to take us back to Kandy before we'd had time to look around Ella, but that aside, the trip - if you can organise it yourselves, was an absolute must see/do for the stunning scenery of tea plantations, tea pickers, the original character of the stations, and houes en route, and the sheer experience of being on a foreign train with all the freedom that goes with it!. Ella was a revelation, we ate a superb local meal, and wandered around the small town, before being driven back to Kandy. This return journey was excellent for its scenery, making a superb round trip. Would thoroughly recommend.

Did this journey from Nanu Oya in Nuwara Elliya to Ella. Could not get first class tickets or reserve d second class ticked but both me and my wife decided to give it a go as it has been portrayed as one of the outstanding journeys. We got second class unreserved tickets. The train was one hour late and fully packed. No space to move and obviously no chance to see much. We had to stand for four hours, the whole duration of journey in a fully packed train. This was a disaster. I would not recommend this journey to anyone without a reserved seat and that to a window seat if you want Enjoy the scenery
We did the train ride to Nanu Oya. With 2 kids a ride of 4hrs was long enough. I loved the tea plantages and other views, but kids loose interest. I was lucky to be able to buy a ticket (1st class) on the morning we took the train, it’s better to order your ticket 1 month before.
I would highly recommend this trip, although be careful of which train you take. There appears to be two trains a day from Kandy to Ella, one at 7.30, which is a new train and is all "1st Class" and to be honest lacks a bit of the local experience and one I believe at 10.30 which is more for the local experience. We got the 7.30 from Kandy. You need to be careful on the seats you have on the train. We were in seats 37,38, 39 and 40 and they had a restricted view out. On the whole it didn't matter as within minutes of leaving Kandy we got up and went and sat in the carriage doorway as they had left the doors of the carriage open. A far better view. Well worthwhile doing
