With Kandy station closed, the journey to Ambewela is quite long, so I really appreciated the opportunity to stop and stretch our legs along the way. It was also a lovely surprise when the driver provided fresh coconuts, strawberries, and snack bags for us. As I’m no spring chicken, I was particularly grateful for the help with my bags and being kindly shown to my seat - it made a real difference. The whole experience felt thoughtful and well organised. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this company.
An amazing train journey to Ella with breathtaking scenery! The staff at Ceylon Pass were incredibly friendly and made the experience even more memorable. Highly recommended!
The train is currently only partially doable due to a large part of faulty rails (about 2/3 of the entire journey). Inquiries initially yielded nothing, but a few days before departure it was said that an alternative van was arranged which drives you past some special places and drops you off at the boarding point of the train journey. In our case there was driving as if the devil was after him, hairpin turns through the mountains and there was only a stop at a tea factory. No time to finish the whole tour (25 minutes) because we ‘had to catch a train’. We arrived more than an hour early for departure, but it turned out that the driver also had a pick-up at the station, so he probably had to pull such breakneck tours. On the train it turned out that we had also been assigned the most lame aisle spots, so we hardly had a view of indeed an improbably beautiful environment. Warned if we were told that tickets would not be available, we had already bought our tickets weeks in advance. People just bought tickets at the stations and not only arranged great seats next to each other but also on the ‘good’ (left) side. It would be good if Viator had informed us in advance that a large part of the trip could not be made. Then we would certainly have chosen a different solution! We are very disappointed by Viator by organizing this most expensive trip we have made in Sri Lanka. For a third of the amount you can be taken to a pick-up point in a comfortable taxi and there you have all the time and opportunities to buy a ticket at the station for the regular price!
The train itself was great, but the assurance when booking that the guide would navigate the station and escort you to your seat was not correct. I am a solo traveller and an older person and the reason that I booked my ticket with a tour operator was because I wanted slightly more tlc in this respect. I do consider that what I paid for in this respect was not forthcoming,
Hi Wendy, Thank you for the feedback. Unfortunately due to overcrowding at stations guards only allow limited number of people to board the train to assist customers. Thefore the guards on the train assist to find the seat upon request. We will take this feedback on board to improve our services. Kind regards Ceylon Pass Team
The train does not leave Kandy..
These tickets are like gold dust it was so hard to get them because we booked very last minute. Luckily they secured us the tickets. Ride to Ambewela was amazing as well l. These guys are amazing!
What a scam! Tour companies like this buy up all available first class traintickets and sell them through for maffia prices. Fine for rich tourists, not great for locals who are unable these tickets for themselves. Being this tourist myself I booked this experience at premium price. Customer service was non existent and completely in favour of the company itself. The morning train I booked got rescheduled to the afternoon train without any notice. Driver (speeding and honking agressively all the time) that drops you off at the station does that two hours in advance, as if you where to catch an intercontinental flight. Worst of all, I was not provided with a first class ticket at all, but a 1200 Rs. third class ticket. I spoke to more customers on the platform that had been provided with third class tickets while booking a higher class. Unethical practice for the locals, and a total scam for tourists!
Hi, Thank you for the feedback. As mentioned on our booking service we do not provide a train time preference as part of the activity. We do sincerely apologise for the overbooking, which we don't have any control over. However we have refunded the difference. Kind regards Ceylon Pass Team
I was travelling in Sri Lanka for the first time and it was just breathtaking and just what the doctor ordered!
It was an unforgettable journey for us and many thanks for the organising staff. Everything explained well in advance for us to prepare and was comfortable to plan our journey. We enjoyed a lot and the experience was amazing 🤩.
The First Class train ride from Kandy to Ella was amazing. The views were absolutely beautiful the entire way, tea plantations, mountains, waterfalls, and greenery everywhere. First Class was comfortable, clean, and not overcrowded, which made the long journey very relaxing. Having a reserved seat made it stress-free, and the big windows were perfect for enjoying the scenery. Definitely one of the best ways to experience Sri Lanka’s hill country. Highly recommended.
