The Courtyard of the “Pigna”, created from the 16th century area of the “Belvedere”
The Sphere within a Sphere" by Arnaldo Pomodoro at the Vatican Museums is a striking sculptural masterpiece that graces the Cortile della Pigna. This captivating artwork features a large bronze sphere with a textured, fractured surface, revealing a smaller sphere within. The interplay of light and shadow on the intricate patterns adds to its mesmerizing allure. Symbolizing themes of complexity and inner depth, Pomodoro's sculpture at the Vatican Museums stands as a testament to the convergence of art, spirituality, and profound meaning in the heart of one of the world's most renowned cultural institutions.
The Sistine Chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere (pontiff from 1471 to 1484) who had the old Cappella Magna restored between 1477 and 1480. It is known throughout the world both for being the place where the conclave and other official ceremonies of the Pope are held (in the past also some papal coronations), and for being decorated with one of the most famous and celebrated works of art of artistic civilization the frescoes by Michelangelo.
The largest Basilica in the world is also home to worldwide masterpieces like the famous Pietà by Michelangelo! it even houses an underground crypt for Popes, of which can be visited ( not available on Wednesday morning due to the Papal Audience) The Basilica has a big influence from Michelangelo and you can see his art work throughout. The Basilica was originally built above the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles, where the Pope visits every Christmas or Easter Time.

Rosie was great. Truly fun and enlightening. She was very knowledgeable, very pleasant, and very kind. Highly recommend.
I must say that booking with a tour with the caliber of Azzurra is another level of experience. She is so knowledgeable and her information and teaching during the tour really made me and my family enjoy and appreciate history a lot more. I highly recommend anyone to book a tour with Azzurra. You won't regret!
Early bird option in a small group saves you tons of time by skipping long lines, especially considering that most of areas inside the museums have no AC. Everything is so magnificent and impressive - truly breathtaking. You are walking through history, witnessing the apex of human genius in these masterpieces.
We had a wonderful private tour with Ellie - she was knowledgeable, friendly and fun and we enjoyed the experience. We found it worthwhile booking into a private tour because it was our family only with Ellie, and this created a more intimate experience (ie - not being part of a huge group tour). We did an early morning tour and arrived for the opening, and I would recommend going early. We still had to line up, however, given we had prebooked our line moved quickly. There are still crowds of people in the Vatican and I don't think this can be avoided on any day of the year. City Eyes were excellent - the booking process was easy, the pricing seemed reasonable, and communication leading up to our tour was very good. And our family enjoyed meeting Ellie and spending a few mornings with her (we also did the Colosseum tour with her).
It is especially meaningful to know your family spent more than one morning with Ellie and enjoyed each experience with her. Thank you for trusting CityEyes with your private tours; we would be very happy to welcome you again in Italy. Grazie, e arrivederci! Ellie, and the CityEyes Team
Our private tour of the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica was nothing short of extraordinary — and that was entirely thanks to our guide Alex. His depth of knowledge was remarkable; artwork, corridor, every historical detail was explained with clarity, passion, and a genuine love for the Vatican’s heritage. What truly set this experience apart was his attentiveness. He read perfectly, adjusted the pace when needed having a small child and being a family man himself he could completely empathise with toilet stops and boredom. He highlighted the details we were most drawn to and made sure we never felt rushed or overwhelmed. Alex’s ability to bring centuries of history to life made the entire tour feel personal, meaningful, and unforgettable. This wasn’t just a tour — it was a masterclass delivered with warmth, expertise, and care. We left feeling inspired, informed, and incredibly grateful. Highly recommended.
Reading that the tour felt like a masterclass is an extraordinary compliment. Thank you for choosing CityEyes and for recognizing Alex’s warmth, expertise, and care; he will be very proud to receive your words. Grazie, e arrivederci! Alex, and the CityEyes Team
Great way to experience the Vatican and St. Peter's! Picked up at the hotel, and guide took care of preparations to clear security. She was incredibly knowledgeable - archaeologist in previous career, provided great insight and knew what to highlight. There was so much to see. Thoroughly enjoyed the time spent there and got so much from the tour.
Thank you for choosing CityEyes. We’re very happy the experience gave you a deeper appreciation of the Vatican, and it’s wonderful to know your guide’s expertise made such a lasting impression. Grazie! The CityEyes Team
Simone was knowledgeable and helpful. He worked with all of us to keep everyone engaged which was impressive since we had children to seniors with us.
Thank you for choosing CityEyes and for your kind words about Simone. Keeping a group engaged across different ages takes real care, and he will be very happy to read your words. Grazie! Simone, and the CityEyes Team
Maria was incredible! Maria picked us up early from our hotel and her knowledge and passion for this tour was visible immediately. For 3 and half hours Maria provided an exciting, mind blowing and cut the crowds (as much as possible) experience. The early tour time is a no brainer. We were able to stand in the middle of the Sistine Chapel, during peak tourist season, with not much people around us...an experience we will never forget. I travelled with my 20 year old son who loved this tour as much as I did. We highly recommend this tour and highly recommend Maria who was outstanding.
An experience you will never forget is exactly what we hope to create. Thank you for choosing CityEyes and for recommending Maria so warmly; she will be very proud to read your words. Grazie, e arrivederci! Maria, and the CityEyes Team
I'm sure you have all been on a large tour with ear plugs led by a tour guide to whom English is their second language and you have trouble understanding what they are saying. This is the exact opposite. There were four of us. Katie, our tour guide, is from California so easy to understand. She is very knowledgeable. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
Thank you for choosing CityEyes and for your kind words about Katie. We’re very happy the tour felt clear, personal, and enjoyable for your group. Grazie! Katie, and the CityEyes Team
Overall experience was outstanding. Pickup from hotel and transfer was smooth and seamless. Michela was a fantastic guide, and I would highly recommend the Early Bird Tour - seeing the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica before it got busy made the experience that much more special. The tour was definitely a highlight of our trip to Rome, and would certainly recommend.
