Description

You will learn of the legends around some of the most iconic locations in Winchester. You will get to know notable characters of kings, queens and bishops that work hard to give the city its hard earned reputation, such as King Alfred. This tour covers a wide range of historical events, walking through different sections of the city to get your to connect with its character and beautiful architecture inspired by prominent buildings like Winchester cathedral and the old castle. It is not every day that you visit the ancient capital of the kingdom with a medieval historian! *Although Dr Lillian Cespedes Gonzalez (PhD historian) delivers the majority of the tours the team has grown since 2021. Rest of the team are trained by her and historians/teachers/or history students of the university of Winchester. See our reviews*

Not the tour that’s advertised

Booked for the Anglo-Saxon, King Alfred focus the listing leads on, and expecting Dr Lillian. At 1.30am on the day I was told I’d be met by someone else. The tour gave about five minutes to Alfred before moving on to building prices and local wealth — not what’s advertised, and a group passing nearby were covering exactly the history I’d hoped for. Disappointing in itself. What tipped it was the reaction when I raised it afterwards: defensive and argumentative rather than willing to listen. Wouldn’t book again.

Operator response

This tour has never been listed as a tour focused or exclusive about king Alfred or the anglo saxons which is apparent in our description and itinerary. It is very clearly said in our terms and conditions that Lillian isn't the only one - and nor did you request a specific one. You literally turned up to the tour and told our guide what you were interested on the spot and our guide did the best to accommodate while delivering the tour you actually hired which is a private walking tour of Winchester not king Alfred. You then came to threaten us, speak rudely to us and ignore any of the comments we made about the terms and conditions of your booking. You wanted a customised specialist tour with no communication to us and then made us pay the price for your entitlement which we could have serviced if only we would have known in advance as clearly stated in the communications you received from us. We sincerely hope you never book again.

Beautiful City - bad guide

The city and Cathedral have much to offer. Definitely worth the visit. Our guide was sub par. A good guide always enhances the tour, this one did not. He was impatient and seemed focused on finishing and moving on. At one point one of the ladies asked if there were restrooms nearby. He said yes and kept moving. Finally we saw a sign and said can we stop and use restrooms? He rolled his eyes and relented. If this young man wants to improve 1) be patient with your group 2) know your city 3) stop doing things that make your customers uneasy We are on vacation and we want to enjoy it

Operator response

This young man has received plenty of praise on our platform whose name is Thomas and you can see that. He knows the city well, and we have never heard anything but good on his behalf. However Thomas remembers your tour well and remembers you being not the most pleasant group to work with so perhaps, the feedback is mutual.

An enjoyable trip around...

An enjoyable trip around Winchester with a student guide who was very pleasant. Arrived and finished on time. I would say it was over priced.

Operator response

Thanks for your feedback. Considering you paid 25 pounds per person for a private tour where you were the only participants, with the guide entirely for yourselves for 90 minutes, the price of the tour is actually correctly priced. Private guided tours are normally priced at a premium, as we perform them at a very affordable price. Considering you haven't said a single complaint to justify your criticism, we cannot help but respectfully disagree with your comment or rating.

Nice tour

I did this tour. There is a decent amount to see. It was an easy train ride down from London. I did the tour. The guide was great. The Main Street, the hall, and the church were great.

Operator response

Thank you kindly! Glad you had a good time

Great tour of Winchester through time

Lillian was a great guide. She walked us bravely through Winchester (at in some moments a horrible down pour of rain) with nothing but cheer. noting all the history as well as its more modern quirks. She’s super knowledgeable and very personable. We especially loved being shown the little pockets of monuments and history that would have been easy to miss by ourselves. Thank you for a great morning, it was the perfect start to our day out as newbies to the town.

Operator response

Thank you so much for spending some time with us and trusting us with your tour despite the rain! Take care

Winchester Tour with James

Our guide James, was very friendly and knowledgeable and we learnt so much about the history of Winchester. Even though it was raining for the majority of the tour it did not dampen our experience.

Lovely walk with a knowledgeable expert

I learned a lot about Winchester from a real expert. I particularly enjoyed learning more about King Alfred, and exploring some of the byways and back-ways. A great experience.

Operator response

Thanks so much we'd love to have you again

It was very interesting!...

It was very interesting! My guide was Sam, who is doing his master's degree in history. He was very open to answering my questions about the history of Winchester and overall England - I really appreciated that!
