The Eagle's Nest or Kehlsteinhaus was built in 1937-1938 as a gift for Hitler's 50th birthday. The building is an architectural masterpiece with fantastic views, rising on a narrow rocky ridge at an altitude of 1,834 metres in the middle of the Bavarian Alps near the Alpine town of Berchtesgaden. A visit to the Eagle's Nest is fascinating, your private English-speaking driver will take you to the car park, where a local bus will take you along a steep 6.5km long path carved into the rock. In 15 minutes you'll climb 700 metres. But that's not all. When you reach the upper car park, you'll have to walk through a marble-lined tunnel and then take a luxurious period lift up another 124 metres. There, you'll find not only the interior of the once-famous villa, but also the restaurant and, of course, stunning panoramic views of the Alps.

Admission not included120 min

Don't miss the opportunity to take a boat trip and enjoy the peace and quiet of the national park. A breathtaking panorama of waterfalls and towering cliffs awaits you. The emerald green Königssee lies at the foot of the eastern face of the Watzmann in the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park. At 190 metres deep, it is the deepest lake in Germany. The boat trip across the lake stops at the famous St Bartholomew's Church. The 17th century church is one of the most photogenic spots on the lake. There is a kiosk and restaurant nearby. Interestingly, the lake only freezes over once every 10 years on average. It takes unusually cold weather and no wind. A cruise on the lake is therefore an experience at any time of the year.

Admission not included180 min

When you've had enough of the beauty Königsee, a comfortable private transfer awaits you to the next gem. The imposing Fortress Hohensalzburg is the largest surviving fortress in Central Europe and offers breathtaking 360° panoramic views. Originally built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard as a defensive fortress, it sits atop the Festungsberg hill. It still occupies a dominant position today, overlooking the city of Salzburg as its eternal guardian. Inside the castle there are several museum exhibitions. On the third floor are the original rooms, including the Princes' Hall, the Golden Chamber and the Golden Hall. The furnishings in these rooms are original and have remained unchanged since 1501/1502. The historic city centre is also beautiful, where you can visit the filming locations of the iconic musical The Sound of Music.

Our guide Abir was very kind. It was the perfect day in 3 great locations. It is nice to do research ahead of time so you have an idea of things you want to see in your free time once you get to the locations.

Exhausting but well Worth It

This was an all-day tour covering 3 locations. I thought I was in shape, but realized how the altitude at Konigssee and Eagle Nest can change that assessment! We were fortunate to have an experienced tour guide in Tomas Vacir. He was proactive in telling us when we need to buy tickets (the lift at Konigssee, the bus up to Eagle's Nest). If it had not been for him, we would not have been able get into Eagle's Nest, as it happened to be a holiday and the morning slots had already been taken. We adapted by going to Konigssee first, taking in Eagle's Nest in the afternoon and finishing the day in Salzburg. Tomas was very prompt to greet us after each visit and get us to our next destination. He even provided us map location to our phone of sites to visit in Salzburg.

Eagles nest bust.

After a long drive, the tour had been closed due to weather. Had we been informed of this, alternative plans would have been made. The driver we had however, was fantastic and we made the best of it.

Operator response

Dear Jeff, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re truly sorry that the main site was unexpectedly closed due to weather — we completely understand your disappointment after such a long drive. Unfortunately, closures of attractions for weather or safety reasons are beyond our control and are often announced with little or no prior notice. Our team always aims to inform guests as soon as such updates are available, but in some cases, local authorities make these decisions at the last minute. We’re very glad to hear, however, that your driver provided excellent service and helped make the most of the day despite the circumstances. Your kind words will be passed along to him. Thank you again for your understanding, and we hope to welcome you on another journey under sunnier skies next time. Kind regards, The Europe Journey Team

An Enjoyable Day Spent!!

We enjoyed an entire day with Tomas. He is fluent in English and we had enjoyable conversations the whole day. He loves history and shared a lot of information, so if Tomas is your driver please ask about the history for each spot visited. We loved how this private tour is completely catered to what you want to do and for how long. We were able to communicate with Tomas using WhatsApp to modify how long we wanted to stay at each place. He was quick to respond and pick us up promptly. Tomas really made this tour fun and enjoyable as it takes an entire day. A couple of suggestions: get to Eagles Nest early as the large tour groups show up around 10:30 am and be sure to contact The Europe Journey Team and request the links to purchase the tickets for the bus at Eagle Nest and the boat ride at Lake Königssee before you go. The Europe Journey Team was also very quick to respond using WhatsApp. They sent me our driver Tomas’ contact information the day before so I was able to touch base about the pickup time. Munich’s weather can change quickly so pack for both rain and sunshine. Overall we enjoyed each spot visited. Munich is a beautiful city with lots to see 💕

Operator response

It’s great that you appreciated the private tour’s customization and the ease of communicating with him via WhatsApp. Your tips for future travelers, including visiting the Eagle’s Nest early and preparing for Munich’s changing weather, are very helpful. We’re delighted you enjoyed every stop and the beautiful city of Munich. We hope to welcome you on another adventure soon!
