We essentially missed half the tour because a restaurant we were taken to was closed. We only saw Strasbourg and we were informed of hidden fees in the beginning of the trip. To those considering this trip: The tour company tried to charged 120 Euro per hour if the trip exceeded 8 hours. This was first told to us when we got in the vehicle by whatever company Viator gave the trip to. The guide was embarrassed to say it, but I understood he needs to keep his job too. I tried to ask what they would do if we said no, but he did not understand. It would be impossible to have this trip be just 8 hours. (In our case, we drove for 6+ hours and had a couple hours in Strasbourg and a visit to a closed restaurant. I told the guide to take us back at this point. We arrived at our hotel at the 9 hour mark.) The driver was a really nice guy and excelled at giving the right amount of history during his story telling to keep us engaged.
The places I saw were beautiful but this trip was completely tarnished by a greedy tour guide who, on the way back, when we were stopped in Baden Baden, wanted to invoice me for extra hours on the trip. We hadn't even reached the posted time for the trip yet. I prepaid over $1,500 for this trip. We didn't do any special stops at my request - we only did the things that were highlighted in the itinerary. All the way back to Frankfurt, I was interrogated about how much I paid, how many other trips I was booked on and the total I paid. Coincidentally, I met a couple on my Rhine tour the next day who took the same tour, paid the same amount for two people, started the tour at the same time I did (9:30 am) and arrived back in Frankfurt at the same time I did. They were not subjected to extortion attempts for more money!! I ended up giving the driver EUR 200 cash when he dropped me off because he made me feel obligated. What a royal rip-off! Fair warning to the solo traveler - you will instantly be targeted in an extortion attempt to pay much, much more for the trip than what it was worth. Incidentally, I took a number of tours while I was in Frankfurt (with larger groups, thankfully) some of which were longer than this one, and none of the tourists were harassed to pay more. I would like an explanation for this extraordinarily dishonest behavior please.
r guide was terrific, but i think the trip to strasbourg is just too long for one day. would have liked to spend more time there and also in the black forest.
Our tour guide, Willi, made this trip really special. He was so knowledgeable about each area we visited and shared lots of info about Germany in general. Willi's sense of humor was great and he kept us laughing all day. There is much to see on this trip so we didn't spend an inordinate amount of time at each place, which is exactly what we wanted. I highly recommend this tour and if you have Willi as your guide, you won't be disappointed.
