Description

Come and meet the King of the Fjords – on our tour to the longest fjord in Norway: the Sognefjord. On this tour we travel through beautiful scenery of Western Norway: you will see lush valleys, barren mounain landscapes, raging waterfalls and, of course, the fjords. The main destination on this tour is the Sognefjord. A scenic relaxing fjord cruise on a small car ferry, that only local people use, is included. We stop at marvellous places with stunning views and visit such attractions as the wooden Hopperstad stave church from 1130. Your own professional driver-guide is with you all the time and provides interesting commentary to the sights and general information about Norway. Duration is approx. 11 hours. Car on this tour is one of our Mercedes minivans. When only 1-3 people are going on this tour, we may use our Tesla Model X. All of our cars have Norwegian Passenger Transport Licence.

Itinerary

Pass by

Our tour starts in the city of Bergen - the Gateway to the Fjords. The city was founded in 1070 and contains many historical and cultural landmarks. We will pass some of them on our way from the city and also on our return to Bergen.

15 min

We pass through the town of Voss on our way to Gudvangen. The main historical attractions are Vangskyrkja - church from 1277, and the St.Olaf's cross from 1023.

30 min

We make a stop at Tvindefossen waterfall, located 12 km (7.5 miles) to the north of Voss town center. We can come close this cascading 110 meters (360 ft) tall waterfall.

10 min

Our next stop is at the Sendefossen waterfall on our way up to Vikafjellet mountain area.

15 min

On our way down from Vikafjellet mountains, we stop at Storesvingen cafe for a cup of coffee (to go) and stunning view over the bay of Vik and the Sognefjord.

Admission included25 min

First stop in Vik is at Hopperstad stave church – a wooden church from ca. 1130. It is, together with Urnes, the oldest stave church in existence.

60 min

We come to the center of Vik – a small village on the Songnefjord. Some say that the word Viking comes from here. We stop here for lunch and maybe a little walk through cosy streets. The car ferry leaves at 2:00pm.

Admission included90 min

It is time for a fjord cruise on the King of the Fjords – the Songefjord – the longest fjord in Norway! We leave on a small car ferry from Vik. The ferry is mostly exclusively used by local people, coming to or going from hard-to-reach, secluded villages and farms on the fjord's shore. If we are lucky, the ferry will stop at some remote farms hidden inside picturesque bays. The fjord cruise is about 1.5 hours long.

Pass by

After disembarking the ferry, we have a pleasant drive along the Sognefjord before we reach the village of Bjordal – from here, we travel off the beaten track through the mountains to our next stop: Stordalen Mountain Lodge.

30 min

We stop at Stordalen Mountain Lodge for a cup of coffee. If you are interested in WW2 history, this place has a story to tell.

Pass by

Descending from the mountains, we come to the Matresfjord. We are on our way back to Bergen.

Admission not included45 min

The next stop is optional: We can prolong this tour with a visit to Bjørn West Museum in Matre – Museum of Norwegian guerrilla during WW2. This is a private visit after the museum's closing time and has to be booked in advance. Entrance fees apply.

Pass by

We travel along the Osterfjord to Bergen.

Pass by

Before returning to Bergen we will cross the fjord on the second longest bridge in Norway – the Nordhordlandsbrua – part floating part suspension bridge.

5 min

The tour ends in Bergen. Suggested scheduled time for return is 7:30pm.

An intimate perspective of the fjord’s beauty

We would highly recommend this tour. Bjorn’s intimacy with the fjords lead to personalized storytelling about the places we observed and the people who live along the water’s edge. The small RIB offered a unique vantage point from which to absorb the fjord’s natural beauty. The brief train ride back to Bergen was easy and picturesque. We loved every minute. Perhaps the only disappointment was that the day was shorter than had been communicated. One of the highlights of our Norway adventure!

A true highlight tour of southwestern Norway - not to be missed!

We've been on several private, full-day, car-and-boat tours in the southwest of Norway, and this one was particularly great. Our tour guide, Vlad, went out of his way to show us some very special places that are off the typical tourist route. For example, the small, local car ferry from Vik stopped at numerous isolated, small farms at different points along the fjord, to drop off people with their supplies and to deliver mail to the local inhabitants who waited on their docks. Observing these intimate details of daily life provided a unique window to further showcase the incredibly beautiful fjord and vistas. Also, we rode up high into the mountains, which allowed spectacular views from a different perspective, and included a secret surprise destination. It was great to spend the day with Vlad, who is highly personable and knowledgeable. Our tour was worth every krone.
