Founded by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, this university stands as a testament to his vision of an open and holistic educational environment. Visva Bharati translates to "The communion of the world with India," and this philosophy is deeply ingrained in the university's ethos. The campus itself is a work of art, beautifully landscaped and adorned with Tagore's sculptures, making it a haven for those seeking not just education but also spiritual and creative inspiration. The university is divided into various schools and departments, covering a wide range of disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and the arts. It's known for its emphasis on open-air classrooms, which promote a unique form of education where students and teachers can engage in a natural and unrestrictive environment.
The ashram, known as "Santiniketan" means "Abode of Peace" and it truly lives up to its name. Nestled in the serene & lush surroundings of rural West Bengal, this ashram provides a tranquil setting for both learning & reflection. One of the most striking features of Tagore's Ashram is its emphasis on open-air classrooms. Tagore believed that the natural environment played a crucial role in the education of individuals. Therefore, classes are often conducted beneath the shade of trees, where students and teachers engage in discussions and creative pursuits in close connection with nature. In essence, this is not just a place of learning; it's a sanctuary of peace, creativity & enlightenment. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Tagore and his timeless contributions to literature, art & education in India and beyond. A visit to this sacred place is a journey into the heart of Tagore's vision for a harmonious world enriched by the pursuit of knowledge and the arts.
Chhatimtala is essentially a large tree, an iconic "Chatim" (Indian date palm), under which Rabindranath Tagore used to sit and contemplate. It was under this tree that he penned many of his literary works and engaged in philosophical discussions with his students and scholars. The tree has since become a symbol of Tagore's wisdom and spiritual insights. The name "Chhatimtala" itself is a combination of two Bengali words: "Chhatim," referring to the date palm tree, and "tala," which means the base or ground. This name is a direct reflection of the tree's significance at this location. The area around Chhatimtala has been preserved in a manner that maintains its natural beauty and simplicity. It's not uncommon to find students and visitors alike sitting beneath the shade of the tree, reading, contemplating, or engaging in discussions. The tranquil atmosphere and the connection to Tagore's legacy make it a place of pilgrimage for those interested in his life and philosophy.

The name Khoai Mela indicates that this Mela was set up by local artisans on Saturday in the Khoai region on the bank of the Khoai river. This Mela is also called Shanibarer haat (Saturday fair). The word "Khoy" in Bengali means erosion. This Khoai region is a geographical formation of small canyons resulting from constant erosion caused by wind and water. This place is characterized by the Shyambati canal on one side and a Sonajhuri Tree forest growing in red laterite soil on the other side. The Khoai Mela originally started to explore the art, music, and songs of local peoples and santhali tribes on a larger scale. The main attractions of Khoai Mela are affordable handmade artifacts, such as embroidered scarves, blouses, salwar kamiz, kurta, shirts, different kinds of bags and purses, handicrafts, necklaces, earrings, wall hangings, etc. The local Baul singers present traditional folk music and songs by stringing their ektaras. The Santhali tribes present their folk dance.

Had a fantastic 8-hour roundtrip to Shantiniketan with our friendly driver and Mukherjee, who accompanied us. Despite Covid-19 restrictions at the university, Mukherjee made sure we enjoyed the visit by being with us. He joined us at the Saturday market, helping us get fair deals. The tour company's dedication to our comfort was evident. The journey was smooth, and having Mukherjee with us made exploring Shantiniketan extra enjoyable. Highly recommend for a stress-free and culturally rich experience—five stars well-deserved!
This tour was a perfect blend of personalization and exploration. Our interests were seamlessly incorporated into the itinerary, and my guide was a treasure trove of local knowledge. Comfortable transportation and expert planning made for a stress-free and enriching day. 5 stars!
The university and museum was closed. Had to peep through the fences to see anything. Got a few photos with the help of the guide. He also co-opted the help of a very knowledgeable local guide. The trip was long and the traffic through the towns was taxing. However because of the guide it became enjoyable. He was sensitive to the type of guests we were and played the most beautiful music for us. All Tagore, the founder of Shantiniketan, music. He translated the lyrics and the time went by. That in fact was the highlight of the tour.
Excellent choice and pleasant reprieve after Sights and Sounds of Kolkata. The campus and museum was closed but that deficiency was made up by the excellent guide Mr T Mukerjee. He was informative and sensitive to the nature of his guests. He played and translated the most beautiful music and lyrics written by Tagore throughout the 8 hour drive to and from Kolkata. It was the highlight of the tour.
The campus was closed, so was the museum. Our views were through the iron fences. However our guide Mukerjee was great and made up for these deficiencies. He was well informed and entertained us with beautiful music of Tagore during the eight hours to and from Shantiniketan. The music and the translation of songs were the highlight of the trip.
I went to Shantiniketan on a day trip with Kolkata Trips on 18 September 2023.I was a solo traveller and was a bit apprehensive about such a long car journey on the same day. But Mr Tirthankar Mukherjee was very reassuring. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip as well as the journey. My trip guide entertained me throughout the journey both to and from with wonderful music and videos which of course, was Rabindra Sangeet! In addition, Mr Mukherjee was extremely kind and hospitable and treated me to both breakfast and lunch, for which I am so grateful. Kolkata Trips is great!
